Apparently being unveiled in a week.
What RPGamer didn’t mention in this news bit is that Megami Ibunroku is the Persona series’ main title (i.e. P1 was Megami Ibunroku Persona). MI itself means "Strange story" (I suppose something similar to "side story")… I suppose the fact that this isn’t subtitled "Persona" means it is probably not a main series game, but it’s odd for them to create a spinoff of a spinoff series.
Propaganda at RPGamer.

May 20, 2009 at 3:05 am #36203NiahakModeratorThere’s a bit more info about it now that its release date is June 23rd. The trailers make it look like sort of a combination of the original SMTs and Persona plotwise, with sort of tactical-RPG gameplay.
Amazon has a few trailers up.
After Tierkreis was so disappointing in the difficulty department, hopefully this one will have more difficulty… though not too much. If it has half the polish Tierkreis does and a little difficulty, it should be awesome.
May 20, 2009 at 12:46 pm #36204Lord Yuan ShuKeymasterYea it doesn’t have to do much to be harder than Tierkreis. That series generally has some competitive games, an SRPG out of them is a bit strange. I’ll have to watch the trailers here and see it.
Looks like Chieftain approves. I thought for a second he came back then I saw it was dated 6 months back.

Huo Hu's Adventure started Destiny of an Emperor hackingJuly 25, 2009 at 11:36 pm #36205NiahakModeratorI've picked this game up and it's been hard to put down. Probably played 6 hours so far in just a couple days (that's a lot for me).
Been playing on Easy, and it's been occasionally rough but not too bad. Could be the only difference is how much Macca you get, since everything seems pretty well balanced otherwise.
Battles go really, really fast in comparison to most tac-rpgs. This can only be a good thing because TRPGs have always felt slow to me.
Also, I've looked into the Megami Ibunroku thing and apparently they're dropping it for the Persona re-release. Seems like a pre-title they use for ideas they're experimenting with, making Devil Survivor "just" a regular spinoff (though it does have some Persona flavor to me).
August 10, 2009 at 2:11 am #36206Lord Yuan ShuKeymasterI'm maybe 6 hours in too now, not sure..I don't remember ever choosing a difficulty, for some reason. It has been challenging for the most part and pretty brutal at times if you don't do at least a few random battles once in a while. Also, staying on top of fusing / buying new Demons seems to be something one needs to do often as well, since Demons seem to be obsolete pretty quick.
Yea, I like how smooth the battles flow, and in the game in general for that matter. Translation is nice, dialogue is always interesting and insightful…and the story is pretty dark…Very much an ATLUS game, plenty of Personae you would recognize..
I would have responded about this earlier, I've been playing for about a week, but it's one of those games that is so addicting that I don't even feel like wasting time talking about playing it, you know..

Huo Hu's Adventure started Destiny of an Emperor hackingAugust 13, 2009 at 7:23 am #36207Lord Yuan ShuKeymasterBeldr was nothing…lost the first time going through, but that's because I didn't head towards him fast enough and got caught with a second wave of reinforcements. I tried to leave a few of the weaker units alive (3 of them, Pyro Jacks mostly) but even still he calls upon the reinforcements. But with Double-Hit + Basilisk's 'evil wave' ability, it was nice to attack twice from a long range and burn his HP….
But that first time through, wow it was so cheap watching the second wave of Cait Sith's rush in to spam Media on Beldr.

Huo Hu's Adventure started Destiny of an Emperor hackingAugust 18, 2009 at 8:37 am #36208Zhang LiaoParticipantNice, Lord. The game looks great I might actually get DS in the future. I especially want SMT: Starnge Journey, looks like the old school SMT's.
In related news a Persona 3 game is coming out for the psp in the future. It seems to be an all new game with a female protagonist, wierd. I'm still much more interested in the DS games though.
August 18, 2009 at 7:01 pm #36209Lord Yuan ShuKeymasterYea it's been a good time. It's about all I've been playing for a few weeks, and has been enjoyable. It's starting to drag on me a bit at times but it's likely because of how often I've played it (ie I'm gettin a little burnt out from it, though I haven't played it much the last few days so I'm getting antsy to go through and finish off the last two days).
Lots of events that are effected by your actions and how you choose to disperse your time; in turn I've had a few important characters die that I could have saved and used in battle. But that's part of what contributes to the great replay value, along with the 1 saved game slot (meaning if you want to try all the different permutations this game has, you'll need to go through more than once).
Yea Shin Megami Tensei Strange Journey is another one I've been following. Looks nice – classic graphics and style, though I don't know much about that since I didn't play older SMT games. I like the idea of the entire game being in a really icy area, a neat twist.
Niahak was mentioning that spin-off of Persona 3 earlier today. Sounds like it could be a worthwhile pickup, though I don't know when I'll have the time to pick up a PSP and scavenge through those games since I have a hard enough time keeping up with PS3 and DS stuff. Still though, I'll be keeping my eye on that game.

Huo Hu's Adventure started Destiny of an Emperor hackingAugust 18, 2009 at 10:00 pm #36210NiahakModeratorLooks like the P3 PSP is a port where you can play as a female protagonist instead.
They also added most features of P4 to the new P3 port which should make the game 10x better. It might not look as great, being on the PSP, but who cares? :)
SMTDS is probably my favorite DS game thus far. Like the Lord, I had a character die who I could have saved (I saved at least one other one).
Re: picking up a PSP, I started in on that a month or so ago. Thus far all I've played much of is Class of Heroes… finding the time is rough.
August 19, 2009 at 5:26 am #36211Zhang LiaoParticipantThe first Persona port is a definate buy for me but I don't know about P3 Portable maybe when it's real cheap or something. It's just that the game is around 80+ hours and I've already played through it twice (the original then FES) I just don't think I could find the time for it especially since I could experience a new game, but thats just me.
Watching a few vids of Devil Survivour and it does really look good I think I need to save up some cash.
August 19, 2009 at 9:46 pm #36212NiahakModeratorYeah, I've already preordered P1 PSP myself. It was the last straw for me and the primary motivator behind getting a PSP (other cool stuff's since been announced; the P3 port and the Valkyria Chronicles sequel). I loved the original soundtrack and plot, so it can only get better what with the Snow Queen stuff.
P3P I will probably get just for the P4 improvements and having a portable P3. I'm still on the fence on whether I like the plot of P3 or P4 better though…
I also played through The Journey twice, but it's a solid enough game that I might be up for a run-through of an improved version in a couple years. I'll have to think about it for sure; I'll buy nearly anything so long as it has SMT in the title though ;)
August 20, 2009 at 2:08 pm #36213Lord Yuan ShuKeymasterI can't believe they're putting The Journey out again. After FES, I was just so burnt out from that game…I love it and all, one of the best late PS2 games I'll probably ever play. But enough is enough, for me at least…though I do understand the appeal of playing it on the go, pointing and clicking to get to places, and of course controlling your AI (though as I've said before I think that not controlling your teammates artificially ramped up the difficulty for P3 and made it more fun, though annoying at times).
Haven't had a minute to play Devil Survivor the last few days, I'm hoping to complete it by the end of the weekend and have the guide done and submitted to GameFAQs. We'll see..
