From Actual History, and the novel. Novel characters. – Guan Yu isn’t as great people think he is. Lost the majority of battles he participated in, and pushed his men when he was angry into battle.
Jiang Wei was hated by the people of Shu, lost all battles he went on the north.
Ma Chao. He was an a**hole in history. He attacked village’s for his amusement, abandoned his people and fled with the Qiang. He asked Liu Bei to join. And was given a good position for his reputation in the north. Couldn’t contribute to Shu because he died shortly after joining.
Yes, etc.
Huo Hu

For some underrated ones, I’ll go with these to start:
He Qi. The man who expanded Wu’s borders more than anyone else. Never lost a battle, and was consdered to be one of Wu’s best officers of the entire period. Not mentioned once in the novel.
Zhu Ling. Officer of Wei who served under Yu Jin for years. Said to be an extremely fierce and talented warrior and commander, Cao Pi later declared him to be one of Wei’s best officers.
Pan Zhang. Wu officer who was much similar to Gan Ning. Renouned for his fierceness, he personally fought on the frontlines at Yiling, slaying many. Also had other impressive victories under Sun Quan. Given a dishonorable death by Guan Xing in the novel.
Will have more later.
November 25, 2007 at 6:33 pm #30894Lord Yuan ShuKeymasterGood picks guys. Reading the novels definitely makes it seems like Shu officers are God’s but yes Rick, they aren’t as good as advertised. Interesting stuff about Ma Chao especially.
He Qi…good pick. Very underrated and I only recently remembered him for the new Destiny of an Emperor mods.
For underrated generals I’ll say Ding Feng for his longevity in Wu.
Overrated, I have to think some more. But Yan Liang and Wen Chou come to mind…have they really done much in the novel to justify their crazy War stats?

Edit(after realizing): Sorry I meant to tell you when I put this message that it was Ma Zhong who captured Guan Yu. My bad.

Wasn’t he dead by that time? I’m pretty sure that, novel-wise, it was Ma Zhong that captured Guan Yu.
I’ve been known to be wrong, though.
Anyhoo:
Overrated – Guan Yu.
Did very little in the way of notable service in his career, apart from lead Liu Bei’s navy at Chang Ban and claim a half victory at Fan Castle (when he flooded the Wei armies).
Underrated – I’ve always said that Ding Feng has been overlooked for too long; his loyalty to Wu and his talents on/off the battlefield deserve better recognition.

I believe he was, however I have in my head that Ma Zhong was the man that actually, physically captured him. Like I said, I could be wrong.

ma zhong captured him.
pan zhong and zhu ran were the generals in charge of the assault…
December 11, 2007 at 12:11 pm #30902huaxiongParticipantOh whoops! I put your quote before, fallout, because I was going to correct you saying that it was Ma Zhong who captured him, but I forgot to write anything.
December 12, 2007 at 4:00 am #30903thechieftainParticipantI think Mi Zhu is underated.
December 12, 2007 at 12:14 pm #30904huaxiongParticipantI disagree, chieftain. Mi Zhu was promoted by Liu Bei to an extremely high ranking, even higher than Zhuge Liang. And he was noted for his abilities in politics and as a civil officer. He was also noted to be an able strategist, although there were numerous ups and downs.
December 14, 2007 at 9:48 pm #30905xiaoxiannuParticipantZhang Fei is absolutely underrated. KOEI only gives him a low int stats.. :D
For overrated I think I better to put this man : Zhang Jue, Zuo Ci, King Mulu, and another magician who used something like magic at that time.. :-D
December 14, 2007 at 10:05 pm #30906FalloutParticipantzhang fei was improving in his war tactics before the death of guan yu. his drunk strategy was awesome and very effective!
