Overrated:
Zhao Yun
Guan Yu
Ma Chao
Gan Ning
Xiahou Dun
Lu Bu
Underrated:
Zhang Fei – He was alot smarter than what Koei shows, the same goes for Wei Yan.
Yue Jin,Li Dian & Yu Jin – They were all great generals who had alot of merits in battle.
Ding Feng,Pan Zhang,Cheng Pu & He Qi – There’s alot more Wu generals who had little recognition but these are the only that come to mind.
January 13, 2008 at 10:56 pm #30908Wei YanParticipantWei Yan was attacked by his own men because they didnt think he was loyal.
In west Shuuuuu born and raised. on a battlefeild is where i spend most of my days.Battling killing all thoes fools when a couple of guys they where up to no good. started making trouble in my neighborhood. i got in 1 little duel and my mom got scared, and said ur moving with ur uncle and aunt to Wu Zhang Plains.I wistled for a carraige and when it came near he had on green with some dice in the rear.if anything i could say to this guy was where but i thought na forget it yo hommie to Wu Zhang.i pulled up to the castle about around 7 or 8 and i yelled to the carriage drive yo home smell ya later. look at my kingdom i was finally there. time to sit on my throne as the prince of Wu Zhang.
January 14, 2008 at 11:41 am #30909huaxiongParticipantWhy did Zhuge Liang entice him to rebel? I mean he was always loyal to liu bei, but once he passed out, Zhuge Liang treated him like a jerk.
June 22, 2008 at 2:08 am #30910DragonAtmaModeratorZhuge Liang probably dstrusted Wei Yan because slew his lord, Han Xuan. In addition, I believe the novel, said that the two reasons he was with Shu were Liu Bei and Zhuge Liang. When both were dead…
And, speaking of overrated officers, don’t forget Sima Yi — it’s surprisingly hard to lose to someone who’s DEAD. He’s had many defeats in the novel, while Jia Xu doesn’t seem to have ANY defeats.
June 22, 2008 at 9:58 pm #30911Taishi CiParticipantI think that’s because Sima Yi was up against someone who was really good like Zhuge, while Jia Xu mostly fought his intellectual inferiors. Certainly he may have been the smartest, but it’s hard to know for sure since he had fewer battles.
February 21, 2009 at 3:42 am #30912DragonAtmaModeratorKeep in mind that Zhang Xiu’s "Do everything Jia Xu says!" tactic soundly thrashed Cao Cao, killing Dian Wei, Cao Ang, and Cao Anmin even though Cao Cao had a better army, more land, and more officers. But if you think that Cao Cao, Cheng Yu, Guo Jia, Xun Yu, Xun You, and Yang Xiu are Jia Xu’s intellectual inferiors, I understand.
February 22, 2009 at 3:28 am #30913WangXunParticipantOkay look no one has said Ma Dai yet. This saddens me becuase he did everything that he was asked to do, even killing Wei Yan.
He was the cousin of Ma Chao, one of the Five tiger Generals, which I have no clue why Ma Chao got that title in the first pace, but this is about Ma Dai. He saw the rise and fall of the Shu Kingdom, he succesfully completed all the missions that he was. Nearly every battle that he was active in it was victory, well balanced in Strength, Leadership, Intelligence. Yet he does not get all of the Credit that he deserves.
Atleast make him a playable character in the Dynasty Warriors games.
February 22, 2009 at 3:42 am #30914Lord Yuan ShuKeymasterJia Xu was a stud, I didn’t understand how Cao Cao got out of there. Hard to gauge it since it wasn’t a head on battle, but it was a superbly planned ambush.
As for Ma Dai, I bet if Shu expands in DW he will be considered. He generally has had a big role in Shu’s battles in past DW’s as it is.

Huo Hu's Adventure started Destiny of an Emperor hackingFebruary 22, 2009 at 3:57 am #30915DragonAtmaModeratorMa Dai’s certainly a very good officer — if nothing else, he outsurvived most of his colleagues. For some reason, however, it seems he didn’t advance in rank much; on kongming’;s site, the ranks pagedoesn’t include Ma Dai even once. On a side note, if Ma Chao died during the struggle with Han Sui, it’s entirely possible that Ma Dai would have gone as far as Ma Chao did (or further!)
Fun fact: Although they always portray Zhao Yun as a young guy and Huang Zhong as an old guy, IIRC Huang Zhong’s only about eight or so years older than Zhao Yun.

I'd have to say that Sima Yi, as a general, wasn't too great. If you consider the terrain and the sheer manpower of Wei, you could've put a tree stump in command of the armies defending Chang An(I think, it's actually been awhile) and Zhuge Liang would've used his genius to make up stories about that stump seeing through his plots and tomfoolery.

August 9, 2010 at 8:16 pm #30917PaulberiosParticipantHmm… Remember Red Cliff where the tree stump (Cao Cao himself) got his rear handed to him by an army about 1/20 his size.
August 10, 2010 at 4:39 am #30918DragonAtmaModeratorIn the book, maybe, but IRL estimates were 220,000-240,000 for Cao Cao (many of whom were dealing with sicknesses and not used to water battles, plus ~70,000 of them were freshly conscripted Liu Biao troops) and ~50,000 for Liu Bei/Sun Quan.
August 11, 2010 at 9:23 pm #30919MiDKnighTModeratorI'll add an underrated figure that I addressed in the Yuan Shao DoaE mod. Zhang Yan, leader of the Heishan bandits. Fought to a draw with Lu Bu. Because he was fast, and agile, and brave, his men called him "Feiyan", meaning "Flying Swallow". Once the Heishan bandits grew in strength the Han court could do nothing to stop them. He was called on by Gongsun Zan to help him at Yijing against Yuan Shao but didn't get there in time. Had he gotten there that battle could have turned out very differently.
August 11, 2010 at 11:10 pm #30920LinkParticipantGuan Ping is overrated. >.> I don't think he should even be in the DW series. After all, what exactly did he do that was so significant as to make him an important character in the series, other than follow his dad around and never being able to be half as good as him? -.-
August 13, 2010 at 2:49 am #30921CommieCatGirlParticipantWhoa, Guan Ping is in DW now? Man, they'd better have Zhou(?) Cang or whatever that bandit who Guan Yu met on his march was, the one who was apparently a good swimmer.
