I can generally handle grinding but P Star 2 was just too much for me. Do they have P Star 3 on the VC? That’s so much more playable…
February 19, 2008 at 4:49 am #33051NiahakModeratorStarted this game today since it was released on Virtual Console and I was bored of the new Nobunaga’s Ambition. Played 2 hours. Nearly got wiped out in the first dungeon, as Rolf kicked the bucket and I didn’t have any escape-stuff.
Impressions so far:
1) Just now, checked a FAQ briefly because the VC manual has absolutely nothing on weapon types. Holy crap, you can equip 2 weapons per character? I mean, sure, it implies you could do it but I didn’t seriously expect it would do anything good.
2) Man, guns suck. 350 Metas for less damage than my 100-meta knife, *and* it’s 2-handed?
3) Nei is the best character in my party so far. I suppose Rolf is supposed to be a caster… But Rudolf seems worthless as much except a tank.
More perhaps tomorrow.
February 20, 2008 at 3:13 am #33052NiahakModeratorDay 2 impressions:
1) 2 weapons per character makes this game possible.
2) WTF. 4 floors in the first dungeon? Preparing to enter this place isn’t like prepping for a dungeon, it’s like mounting an expedition into a vast hostile wilderness.
3) Come to think of it, why am I helping this Darun guy anyway? Aren’t I on official marine/hunter/gov’t business?
4) Comparative analysis:
Scenario: You just went one direction at a fork ended up at a dead end.
Wild Arms: "Good work, explorer! You deserve a treasure chest." *poof*
Suikoden: "Aha! You have found the ultra-hidden 104th character who will not join you until you find the first 103!"
Phantasy Star: "You took a wrong turn, numbskull." *slap* "Try again. Oh, and by the way, you might’ve taken a wrong turn 3 forks ago, too. Good luck finding your way back!"

Huo Hu's Adventure started Destiny of an Emperor hackingFebruary 22, 2008 at 12:27 am #33054NiahakModeratorI just got attacked by two enemies called Pulsers in the second dungeon.
They wiped out my party in two turns.
I don’t know if I can continue playing this game…
February 23, 2008 at 5:08 pm #33055huaxiongParticipantI’m just not patient enough for these kind of rpg’s, honestly. The only rpg’s I’ve got into are the Final fantasy series, doae series, SD Snatcher, and chrono trigger.
February 23, 2008 at 8:24 pm #33056Lord Yuan ShuKeymaster2 is the only one that’s really bad…Phantasy Star IV is seriously right up there in playability with FF4-6.

Huo Hu's Adventure started Destiny of an Emperor hackingFebruary 23, 2008 at 9:38 pm #33057NiahakModeratorI gave this game another chance, and it actually delivered.
Once you really get started (after the first dungeon), there’s a lot less grinding necessary. I’ve found it pretty relaxing to "grind as I go" – the dungeons aren’t really long so much as mazelike.
Now that I have 4 characters, and I’ve gotten a couple new level 1’s recently, I need to level them up anyway – so I stick them on defense, start into the dungeon, and I can pretty much mark off all the dead ends in my mind. By the time I reach a point where I need to go back, I can just cast escape / warp with the hero, pick up the best weapons and armor, and my new character’s ready to help out.
I actually like how the characters work out. There haven’t been any bosses in the 4 dungeons I’ve beaten, so healers let you stay in dungeons longer, while magicians will make sure you survive the tougher encounters. Fighters are all-round useful, but you’d need to rely on items for healing and the trickier enemies will be around for longer.
I’d say so far it’s no worse than Persona 2 or how I remember Beyond the Beyond. It’s just a bit rougher starting out.
February 23, 2008 at 11:16 pm #33058Lord Yuan ShuKeymasterWell that’s good to hear. I probably stopped giving it a chance after the first bit where it’s hard. Had I of played that before the other Genesis / SNES rpgs I probably would have been inclined to fight through.
