ParticipantJust got a ROM of this game, and all I can say is don’t try to fight unless you are using Foi to attack in the beginning. Question, does Nei get to physically attack, or is she just a caster/guarder?

ModeratorYou have to do strategy->order then pick Nei and choose fight. That’s also the only way you can target specific enemy groups :(
One thing that’ll really help: each character can equip a weapon in each hand! This lets them attack twice, which is crucial early on when you only have Rolf and Nei.
Though speaking of that, another thing will be nice – go to the second town (it’s not very far away, same enemies you’ve been fighting) then go back to the first and go to your house to get a third character :) He’s not too great right now, but where I’m at he’s quickly becoming the most useful.
Also, Nei uses the Bar weapons. Since you start with 200 mst, it’s best to pick her up two Bars (since she’s faster than Rolf).
You probably picked well with a ROM :P since I’m playing on VC, I can’t speed-up or savestate in battle.

ParticipantI just realized earlier today that Nei didn’t start with a weapon, which was why she couldn’t attack, now she can about equal damage to Rolf, and I already got Rudo, and am getting him levelled up, but thanks for the suggestion anyways.

ModeratorWell, I just finished the Climatrol area, and man I wish we had spoiler tags, since there are several different color schemes I can’t just use the font-color workaround :P
Climatrol wasn’t actually as bad as it looked from the map – granted, some would say I was cheating by looking at a map or using it to plot my route, but a strategy guide came with the game so bleah to them. (I do wonder why they didn’t include one with the Virtual Console purchase, though).
The game isn’t that much more difficult than it had been up till now – apparently all the robots on the planet are after me for some reason, even though I was working under the orders of the governor of my city… neat trick, that. Wonder how he got out of any of the blame. So I guess I should start actually using Hugh now.
Antlan – Gamefaqs is a decent resource for the step-by-step stuff, but I recommend this site for dungeons due to the excellent maps.

ParticipantThank for the link to the maps, I couldn’t get farther than that locked chest, and then I ran out of TP for Nei, so I booked it out of there.

KeymasterA strategy guide came with the game? I thought you got it on VC though?

ModeratorA strategy guide came with the game waaaay back when it was released on the Genesis, apparently. All the boxes talk about a 160-page guide or some such.
I only use that to justify my FAQing ;)

ParticipantFunny story.
Back in the summer of ’92 I think it was I went to my local Electronics Boutique and found Phantasy Star II for $14.99. I quickly snagged it and noticed it included a guide book. My friend was like score dude!!
Well we get home and open the game, only to find Phantasy Star III in the box. Everything else was Phantasy Star II, instructions, cover, GUIDEBOOK, etc. etc. Decided to keep it cause at the time Phantasy Star III was still selling for around $50 so I figured it was a good exchange.
Back to PSII discussion. PSII isn’t as much about level grinding as it is about mesata grinding. Equipment makes a major difference and can make a dungeon playable or utter crap. Quick tip if anyone playing it doesn’t know yet. Every town you go to return to Rolf’s house for a new companion. As soon as SHIR joins you put her in the party and level her up to lvl 10. Once she hits level 10 keep entering the central tower Room and exiting until she disapears. When she does this return to Rolf’s house and she returns, check her inventory for the Visiphone, this allows you to save the game ANYWHERE.
Also while in Paseo keep entering and exiting the weapon shop until she leaves. Return and pick her up yet again and check her inventory. She should have 1 of these weapons, Dagger(junk), Laser Knife(NICE!), Fire Staff(Get two of these if you have patience for Amy if not get at least 1, u find another), and I think she can steal a Laser Shot as well(save this for Kain).
Main thing to note is SHIR needs to be lvl 10 to be able to steal the Visiphone and you really really really really need this. Without the game is super aggravating. Also by the time Shir is in your Party Rolf should be using Swords, Rudo should use Laser Knifes till you can afford a Laser Cannon, Amy should use 2 Fire Staffs, if not give her Laser Knifes, and Nei should use Laser Bars till…..um well you’ll see.
Also for any other tips, and its a pretty decent faq, check out rpgclassics for the Phantasy Star II shrine.
Any other questions I’ll try to help when I’m able to remember or currently do it(I’m playing PSII on my PSP, bought the Sega Genesis collection because it had Phantasy Star II-IV on it and my original cartridge batteries are getting weak)

Keymasterhaha that’s sounds like quite the trick. And that’s awesome that you were aware enough to realize that you were better off with III since it cost a lot more than II.
I got P Star 2 in like the mid 90’s…before the PS1 but towards the end of the generation. So I had already played III and IV…much more playable games. Playing P Star was just such a chore in contrast…it would be like playing a new FF and then playing FF1 or playing a new Dragon Warrior and then playing Dragon Warrior I….you guys do make it sound tolerable and I think if I had the time and interest I could do it on emulator with the speedup button to grind levels :)

ParticipantWell playing it on a PSP helps cause I can post on message boards, watch tv, nap, eat, bath, etc. etc.
Its not safe to use a PSP in a hottub with the adaptar plugged in remember.

ModeratorI found after a certain point it was safest for Amy to use equip two shields and just use a Storm Gear all the time. It gives her reliable damage against all enemies, including the ones with heavy armor on Dezolis, while she can take one or two more hits before she dies (important, since she has so little HP).
