I just beat it last week for the first time on VC.
I liked it a lot. We need more good science fiction RPGs.
Star Ocean doesn’t count. They all largely take place on medieval-tech worlds.
Rogue Galaxy doesn’t count. Huge structures built by an ancient spacefaring civilization, and they’re made out of brick and filled with zombies? Yeah, right.
Phantasy Star 2 & 4 get things right. AIs both benevolent and insane, misused ancient factories, actually distinct planets. And 4 seems much better than 2, with cool characters and fun comic-panel scenes.
Too bad Sega’s still reaching with Phantasy Star Portable and Phantasy Star Universe instead of making actual pre/sequels or even decent spinoffs.

Yea one of the big mysteries in life so far for me is why there hasn’t been a JRPG style Phantasy Star after the brilliance that was Phantasy Star IV. I’m sure the online types are fine and all…I just felt they had a series close to competing with Final Fantasy. In fact I think I prefer P Star 4 to FF4 and 6, I just like the personality of the characters and flow of the game better.
Anyway, I’m only to the basement in Tonoe. The monsters are fucking hard here after you lose Rune. Rune is a badass in this game early on but seems to mature later on in the game and have more respect for Chaz.
Yea the comic strips are fun. I like how Alys just dominates the men especially Hahn – I think they get off over that kind of shit over there lol.
More opinions on this as I get farther. Motavia is by far the best part of the game, with the Alys event and Zio’s defeat.

I definitely prefer PS4 to FF4. Now that I’ve replayed it recently on the DS, I’ve realized FF4 is a pretty grindy game that happens to have good music and a couple fun characters (that leave your party permanently).
I don’t know about FF6. PS4 definitely has more direction to it, and more fleshed-out characters, but there’s an appeal to FF6’s huge variety of characters. I think that one could be a toss-up.

I would be very surprised if there weren’t some creepy fanmade Alys slash porn out there in Japanese. I love a lot of stuff created in Japan, and it’s a fun place to visit, but they get off on just about anything.
