ParticipantI’m trying to remake this guide with a bunch of pictures and other updates for Kongming. This is just a rough outline for right now.
___________
Chapter 1

So you’re a Destiny of an Emperor fan and you want to play this obscure little game? This guide is here to help you make it through the game in one piece, even if, like me, you can’t read any Chinese. Select Start and begin your journey across China.

As the game begins in Lou Sang village, Liu Bei’s sickly mother asks him to help supress the Yellow Scarves rebellion. You’ll leave the house after the scene, but go back inside.

Items are often hidden in towns inside pots or shelves. Here, for instance, is a Tonic (HP and MP + 100) stashed inside the twin pots.

Now exit Liu Bei’s house and walk north and left to a house with a couple of pots outside. Inside this house, check the basket for an extra 1000 Gold. An easy way to recognize whether a treasure is gold is if it has the hyphen-like mark in the name.

Lastly, enter the house in the southwest (with the desk out front) and check these twin pots for an antidote.
Once you’ve collected all the treasures, it’s time to learn about the different town buildings.

This is the shop, where weapons, armor, and consumables are all sold together. You can usually pick these buildings out by the weapons out front, such as the rack of spears on the right.

This is the Inn, where the price for a night’s rest is always ten gold, even at the end of the game. The Inns of the game are usually adorned by the laterns hanging from the roof.

A less common building is the Tavern, which is usually where an important local hangs out. You’ll be coming to this one very soon.

To get things moving, take a look at the recruitment notice on the sign in the center of town. After a scene, Zhang Fei will tell you to meet him at the tavern and runs off. Notice the orange text in the third picture; it’s an indicator of important plot points, and you’ll want to keep an eye open for orange text in the future. Go to the Tavern to advance the story.

You’ll swear the oath of brotherhood and Zhang Fei and Guan Yu will join your party.

ParticipantThis is a lot of fun, Taishi Ci! Definitely something that would be worth sharing! :-D
I imagine many people would really enjoy playing through with its aid as well.
I also wanted to share this email with you:

OK, the walkthrough in this site did not provide the solution … So i took it as a challenge to try to solve it.
Noted the flowers on the path, i got half the solution in 1.5 hars, but still cannot solve it. So i did the logical thingy and went on to the next part, finding Ma Dai …
Then, after beating Ma Chao, a villager at the right of the village told me that the solution is simply RIGHT, RIGHT, UP, UP, LEFT …
You will then fight a phoenix (hope i spelt it correctly). Dont know how it attacks as i simply make it Zzz … think this is a major flaw of the game. Most bosses can Zzz, and you can just kill them without major damage to yourself if you are lucky.
Then, just a general comment, but many of the storyline written in the walkthrough is incorrect … maybe the walkthrough-writer is a non-Chinese, i guess. Not slamming him/her, just highlighting so, yah?
In fact, can i trouble you to thank him/her on my behalf?
Happy Chinese New Year~!

Interesting information in there?perhaps some worth mentioning in your guide, such as the sleep weakness of bosses? Have you tried that out? I don?t know enough about the story to comment on his thoughts there, though. I would be happy to reply to him for you.

ParticipantThanks James, I’ll check that out the next time I play through this. I assume they mean the forest with the repeating screens.
Yes, I discovered the wonders of Sleep on my last playthrough. They’re right, Sleep > most bosses in the game. Blind is also effective and not as cheap. I’m not sure about Mute.
Me, read Chinese? Funny joke there. I did warn that the majority of plot info would be wrong, I just guessed at the plot so people wouldn’t get too bored. I would be very thankful if your friend there could give me a simple plot summery, boss/location names, etc.
I will get back to this project as soon as I’m done with the LoCC guide, I swear.

Now you should go to the store and perhaps buy a few items. Consumables such as Potions or Ethers will be at the top of the list, followed by weapons, then armor. Not everyone can wear everything, though. For example, each character has a weapon type similar to Destiny of an Emperor 2. Liu Bei uses Swords (as seen here), Zhang Fei uses Spears, and Guan Yu uses Sabers. You won’t have enough money to buy everything right away (unless you’re using the money cheat), so just buy what you think you need and then leave the village through the west exit.

Welcome to the dungeon map. I’m sure you know how this works: get from the entrance to whatever you’re looking for in the dungeon. In this case, you want to reach the Yellow Scarves camp at the far end of the forest.
Those friendly-looking guys walking around are enemy encounters. There are usually three or so different types of enemies that wander around each dungeon. Just walk into them or let them walk into you to start a battle. Note that although there is a finite number of enemies wandering each room, they respawn whenever you leave. Walk into one of them to start a battle.

Seeing as this is the first dungeon of the game, you shouldn’t need to worry too much about the enemies. Just attack them normally since you don’t have any magic yet, or heal with items if you need to. They should fall pretty quickly.

After you win, you’ll get the usual information of EXP and Gold gained from the battle, and any items the enemies dropped. Of course, no battle is complete without the victory dance. Here we have Liu Bei raising his arm in victory, Guan Yu spinning his weapon, and Zhang Fei enjoying a reasonably-sized jug of wine.

After two or three of these battles, you should level up. The brothers start with about the same amount of EXP, so they should level up at the same time. The convienent thing about leveling up is that your HP and MP are refilled, so you don’t have to spend a potion on yourself.

From where you enter the forest, move south a little and you should find this pot sitting in a dead end. Pots hold the treasure and spells of DoaE3, so make sure you track them all down and open them.

In this case, the pot holds the Fire spell. You’ll be asked who to give this to. You might have noticed from the battles that Guan Yu and Zhang Fei are stronger than Liu Bei, so it would be a good idea to give Liu Bei the spell so he can deal out some damage.

Further north near another enemy, you’ll find two pots. The one on the left holds 500 Gold, while the top one has the Ice spell. Ice isn’t as strong as Fire, so give it to whoever you like for now.

Once you leave to the next screen, you’ll run into a couple of Scarves officers who taunt you before making you fight.

These guys (I believe the top one is Zhang Liang and the other is Ma Yuan Yi) can be a little tough if you haven’t leveled up very much. They tend to hit hard and might even knock out one of your party members. Keep your health up, and attack with Guan Yu and Zhang Fei while Liu Bei uses Fire. They have about 80 HP each.

After you’ve defeated them, they run off. If you are hurting badly, you might want to consider returning to the village to heal and buy more Potions. Either way, continue on once you are ready.

On the third screen, make sure you get this Potion from the pot. Then just follow the snake-like path north through the forest to reach the Scarves camp.

The brothers take a look around and confirm that this is the Scarves camp, but Zhang Jue and a bunch of Scarves soldiers suddenly appear and Liu Bei and co. are forced to retreat.

You’re back in Lou Sang. Liu Bei comes up with a plan to defeat Zhang Jue. Now is a good time to shop, since you’ve likely got lots of money from killing the enemies. Get the new weapons and armor, then buy a few Potions and perhaps a Revive or two if you think you’ll need them. If you’re short a little, I suggest going back into the forest and killing a few more enemies to make up the difference; just make sure you stay on the first screen until you’re ready to finish the chapter. If possible, try and get to at least level five, and try to have some of your Limit Breaks built up.

Once you enter the second screen of the forest again, the party splits up and Liu Bei runs ahead to the Scarves camp.

When he gets there, Zhang Jue and some officers attack him. You will be hit with a summon spell that does 999 damage, probably before you even move, so don’t worry about this battle.

After luring Zhang Jue and his officers back into the forest, Guan Yu and Zhang Fei spring the ambush and the real boss battle begins.
Zhang Jue: ~150 HP
Zhang Bao/Cheng Yuan Zhi: ~100 HP
If you have been fighting all the enemies up to this point, you should be around level 5 or 6, which is enough to win here. Take out the officers first and then attack Zhang Jue. Liu Bei should use his spells while Guan Yu and Zhang Fei should attack and use their limit breaks if you have them built up. He will fall after a few turns. Watch out, he can heal though, so make sure to keep your own health up.

Zhang Jue gives one last speech before he dies off. You can tell when people are about to die when they flash like he does (hard to show with pictures).

The games jumps ahead a few years, and now you’re in Xuzhou serving under the Prime Minister, Cao Cao.

Leave your house and walk north into the castle. There will be a scene here where you meet Cao Cao.
Once you’ve spoken to him, walk around town and get all the treasures from the houses.

Go back into the house Liu Bei started in and check the mirror here for some Gold.

Then check this pot in the corner for the Leaf spell. You can give this to whoever you like.

Exit the house and enter the house just to your left, and check the dresser inside for the Cure spell. I would give this to Liu Bei, since Guan Yu and Zhang Fei are better served attacking.

Now leave that house and walk all the way down to the exit, then enter the house to your left. In the dresser inside is another spell; it’s some kind of status spell, but I don’t know exactly what it does.

Once you’ve found everything, go to the shop to buy some new stuff. There is new armor for everyone, a new spear for Zhang Fei, and a Steed that you can buy. Steeds will function like accessories in this game; they go in the two slots below your armor in the equipment menu. Anyway, replenish your potions if you ran low from the fight with Zhang Jue. Rest at the Inn and then leave out the southern exit of town.

This is the World Map, which works pretty much like the dungeon maps only much smaller. From Xuzhou you want to go northeast to reach the cave where Yuan Shu is. The enemies wandering around out here are a little stronger than the ones you’ve fought before, so you may want to level up a little and rest at the inn in Xuzhou when you are weak.

Press Start on the world map to bring up this map of China. If you can read Chinese, then you’ll get a peek at all the locations in the game; you’ll end up going to every one of those places before you’re done. For now, you want to make your way northeast to the cave.

This is the right place. If you went south at the forest, you’ll end up at a gate which you can’t pass yet, so make sure you go north. Enter the cave when you’re ready.

Once inside, walk right, and go north when you get to this fork since the south path is a dead end.

At the next fork, walk left to reach this pot. I’m not sure exactly what the item in this pot is, but I know it’s a cure for some status ailment.

Return to the fork and go north, and keep going north at this fork to find two more pots containing 2000 gold and a Wind Scroll.

Go back, walk left this time, and then go north again at this fork to find a pot with another copy of the Ice spell.

Take the remaining path to reach the end of the cave. Make sure you check this pot along the way, it’s rather hard to miss. Inside is the Blind spell, which works on most enemies (even bosses) and can make battles much easier.

Once you enter the door at the back, you’ll find Yuan Shu. Clearly he’s not happy to see you, so a boss battle ensues.

Boss: Yuan Shu
HP: 750
You’ll want to be at least level 10 for this boss, preferably higher. Yuan Shu will mostly use physical attacks, although sometimes he uses a protect spell. Use your limit breaks when they build up and heal whenever you get hit, because he does a lot of damage. Also try and cast Blind on him so he won’t hit you as much. After a while he will fall, although one of your party members may have been knocked out if you ran out of revives.

Laugh at Yuan Shu as he dies, and then grab the Hi-Ether from the pot in the back before leaving the cave. When you get back to Xuzhou, buy any items that you need replaced, and make sure you stock up on Revives here. You might also want to get your Limit Break bars filled. When you’re ready, go talk to Cao Cao for a series of scenes.

Boss: Che Zhou
HP: 900
You will be using a lot of healing if your levels are low, as the boss can do high damage. He will mostly attack unless he needs to heal, in which case he has a move that recovers 70 HP. Have Zhang Fei and Guan Yu attack, while Liu Bei heals and revives people. Blind also helps here by making him miss a lot. You will get your limit breaks sooner because of the high damage, so use them whenever possible. Eventually he will die.

Obviously, staying in Xuzhou is no longer a good idea since Cao Cao knows about the Girdle Plot, so Liu Bei decides to go seek shelter with Yuan Shao. Restock if you need to on your way out of town. Also, take all of Guan Yu’s spells off him since you might need some of them.

Cao Cao was waiting for you with an ambush! Guan Yu decides to stay behind in order to give Liu Bei and Zhang Fei a chance to escape.

Don’t worry about losing Guan Yu, you should still get by with just the two brothers. You can’t go back to Xuzhou, so head east to the gate you couldn’t enter before and walk through.

From there you want to continue east until you reach this city on the peninsula. Honestly, I don’t know what city this is. I’m just going with Qingzhou since it seems to be in that area.

Enter the city and walk inside the castle to meet Yuan Shao. After the scene, the guards will leave to fight Cao Cao and you’ll be asked to follow them.

Leave the castle and enter the house in the lower-right corner. Check the middle pot to find 2000 gold.

Then check the dresser to get a Hi-Potion.

Go back outside and this time enter the house in the lower-left corner. Check the pot in the photo to find another copy of the Leaf spell.

What should you buy? Hopefully you already have enough Revives, because you can’t buy any here. You can buy som Ethers though, if you like. Make sure to upgrade your gear, and pick up that new Saber for Guan Yu.

Once you’ve stocked up, leave town and walk south and east around the forest. Soon you will reach this clearing on the map, which leads to the Qingzhou Forest.

Walk left from the entrance to find this pot holding another Hi-Potion, and follow the path below you to discover the Thunder spell in another pot. Then walk back to where you started and follow the path north and west to the next screen.

At the first fork you come to, go left and follow the long path to a pot holding a Steed (don’t ask how it fits inside…). You can equip this on either of your party members.

Back at the fork, walk north and then right to locate this pot holding another item. Then follow the path west to the last screen.

You come across Lu Qian and some soldiers blocking the way. Yuan Shao’s soldiers arrive and run past them while you fight another boss battle.

Boss: Lu Qian
HP: 950-1000
Lots of healing here. Hopefully you are at level 15 or above by now. The boss will alternate between physicals, a weak fire attack, and a spell that lowers your attack power for a few turns. Pummel him with magic and limit breaks, but don’t take chances with healing. As before, Blind will make this battle easier.

Yuan Shao’s guards have already left, so follow them out of the forest. Back on the world map, continue on to the gate to find Guan Yu again.

Now that Guan Yu killed Yuan Shao’s soldiers, it’s not a good idea to stay under him, so the brothers decide to head south to seek refuge with Liu Biao. You’ll have to make it past a few problem spots first, though. Make sure to give Guan Yu the Saber you bought, and return any spells you took off him.

Leave the gate and walk southeast to reach Runan. There’s a cave to the west, but don’t go there just yet.

No castle here, it’s just a village. Enter the southwest house first and check the pot in the pic to steal 1000 gold.

Next, go to the southeast house and check the twin pots to get another spell. This one cures a status effect, but I don’t know which one.
Now you can go shopping (I’m not gonna post a pic for every shop since it’d be redundant). Buy the new gear for you characters. They don’t sell any Sabers here; hope you bought the one for sale back in Qingzhou.

Before you leave, make sure you talk to the old man in the building next to the Shop. He’ll tell you about the cave to the west. You’ll need to go there now, so leave back out the west exit.
Note: There’s nothing stopping you from going to the cave before you talk to the old man, but the final room will be empty if you don’t, so it’s a waste of time. Also, you could leave town through the east exit and cross the mountain path, but you can’t go through the gate on the far side, so don’t go that way either.

This is the cave, just west of the bridge.

You get around the Teleport Cave by stepping on teleport pads on the ground, like this one. Run around and kill all the enemies on the first floor if you want, then go straight north from the entrance and step on the teleport pad there.

From the pad, follow the path around to the middle. Two pots are in an alcove near the center, holding a Thunder Scroll and a better Spear for Zhang Fei. Another pot is just north of these two.

Walk east and take the southernmost path around to find two more pots hidden in a room. These pots have a Shield and the Poison spell.

Go back to the center and take this path (in the pic) to reach the teleport pad, then step on it to reach the third level.

Walk down to the southwest corner where the exit was on the first floor, and you’ll find a new exit. Heal up and enter the room.

Zhao Yun is here, being threatened by a giant snake. The brothers arrive to help save him.

Boss: Orochi
HP: 1250-1300
Your levels should be high enough that this guy is cake, he will only ever attack or sometimes use an ice or drain spell. Use the potions and cure spell to heal, and take him out. Thunder works pretty well against him.

Once you’ve killed him, you’ll be able to learn to summon Orochi as a spell. This usually happens whenever you kill the mystical monsters in this game.

Zhao Yun will join your party now, at level 15. He is pretty similar to Zhang Fei, but unlike the rest of the party he starts with two limit breaks. His starting gear isn’t very good so equip him with some of your old stuff for now.

Leave the cave the same way you came in and return to Runan. Hit the shop and resupply your items, and buy the better gear for Zhao Yun if you want. Make sure to revisit the old man from before; he’ll now give you a gate pass for the gate into Jingzhou. Leave town to the east.

Just follow the trail through the mountains until you reach the Mountain Path.

From the entrance, follow the path all the way to the right, then walk up to find these two pots on the ledge. The pots hold 2000 gold and a piece of armor.

Get off the ledge and move north to this fork. First, go north and follow the long path winding around the screen until you reach the second screen…

Until you reach this treasure trove. The upper pots hold the Ice-All spell and a new Sword, while the lower pots contain another Thunder spell and a Steed. Now walk all the way back to the fork on the first screen, and go left this time.

After following that path for a while, you’ll return to the second screen. When you reach this fork, walk south to find one pot to your right with the Revive spell and another pot further left with a healing item. Once you’ve got those treasures, return to this fork and head east to reach the exit. On the world map, continue east to reach the gate.

At the gate, the guard accepts your pass and decides to let you through, but Zhang Liao arrives. He can’t let Guan Yu without a fight, so time for another boss battle.

Boss: Zhang Liao
HP: 1800
He will alternate between physicals (with a pretty high chance of critical) and healing himself for 100. Have Guan Yu and Zhang Fei attack, Liu Bei use magic, and Zhao Yun heal. This battle should not be too hard. For big damage, use your Orochi summon on him; it does high damage to single targets.

Since you managed to defeat him, Zhang Liao lets you go. Liu Bei finally makes it to Jingzhou.
