ModeratorOkay, just a few ideas about things. Already created a lot of new portraits for this mod and have a new story sketched out in my head which I am already starting to put in game. My first question is this. The Japanese names are TOO long to fit on one line, the game only allow 7 characters per line, so my question is this.
Would you like to see names such as Nobunaga written out as Nobu naga or Nobu Naga?
It sounds like a corny question but I don't want to have to go back and redo ALL the names. Obviously if it is less than 8 characters I wont have this issue.

Moderatorpersonally, i prefer Nobu Naga. much like Zhu Ge Liang. assuming 'nobu' and 'naga' are separate glyphs in the original japanese :)
if they're not, any chances of hyphenation at the end of the first 'line' ?

ModeratorI need to head out for a bit; come up with a list of where ten letter long names don't fit, and I'll produce a group of suitable mockups to aim for.

ModeratorWell Nobunaga is one word, but is Oda (clan) and name (Nobunaga) So there are lots of Oda's but only one Nobunaga. Ieyasu fits the lines as does Hanzo. Wish DOAE could fit 8 letters per line… But other ones like
Mitsuhide -> Mitsu Hide
Yukimura -> Yuki Mura
Mitsunari -> Mitsu Nari
Tadakatsu -> Tada Katsu
Mototada -> Moto Tada
Yasumasa -> Yasu Masa
Hideyoshi -> Hide Yoshi
Sound good?

ModeratorYou're leaving off half the name, though — which should be avoidable. If you're not using full names for my sake, use full names for Huo Hu's sake!

ModeratorThere would be many big challenges with that mockup:
– Name length
– Breaking up attributes into columns with no bars
– Breaking up equipped items into separate boxes.
– Listing tactics by column
– Space in the ROM to accomplish all of the above
Even Huo Hu would have a major headache trying to figure all that out. I think the only easy thing I see on there is moving the soldier count :)
Just too much effort for one screen to do that but I could show you where all the code lives if you wanna try… :)

ModeratorDon't ask me, I'm not a programmer. Even so, it should be possible; fans had no problem extending names for everything in FF1.
But if nobody's willing to even try that, then take this:

and shove the stats & bars up a tile, while the name goes down a tile. Poof, it'll have room for long names.
…and once again, the game's expanded, 'member? Don't waste all of that space on unused portraits! Call code form there.

ModeratorAhh that would be MUCH easier Atma. This layout was more doable given what we had to work with.
We have been using the new ROM pages for new code…The problem is that the memory from $2000 to $7FFF vanishes once you switch to an expanded page making it impossible to do nifty coding from the new pages. I think that has to do with the ROM type (MMC1) which wasn't really made to be over 256k.

ModeratorUsing full names would look so corny on the screen ie; Motochik would cut off and look odd, especially in menus. Thus, the Moto Chika and Masa Mune idea seems best.

ModeratorAnd if the names are used in full? The people here have more than enough skill to extend names to ten letters, plus you're modding DoaE not CT!

ModeratorHehe, then maybe I can put in an IOU for those. To really get this mod moving I would need 2 things.
1. A way to extend names and accommodate them without running out of room due to name length. (I believe there is only room for so many additional characters in names also, I think there is even a counter in DOAEditor?)
2. Niahaks update for battle taunts which I use for story progressions and crazy one liners. Being able to select and pull from a text of my choice would be one of my choice updates atm. Stock DOAE only has so many places I can use for content and it takes a lot of messing with stuff I would rather not mess with to make a decent story without messing up the game IE: some stuff I did in the ROLB mod like move pointers for Hua Xiongs battle so I could use his unique taunt (since I didnt know how to select taunts at the time)
