ParticipantI’m looking for an RPG that’ll let you select class or whatever in the beginning and/or have you select stats to level up as you progress.
That’s pretty much all I’m looking for, but I don’t want it to be in MMORPG form.
You have to remember, though; the very thing that makes you a nerd is that your enthusiasms are totally unrelatable and non-marketable to most of the world. For example, anime and celibacy. - Seanbaby

ParticipantFor class, of course there’s FF1, and FF3j and FF5 let you pick classes after you unlock them. Seiken Densetsu 3 has characters in base class which you can branch out from a couple times.
Stats, I know Shin Megami Tensei and SMT2 let you pick the stat progression of all your human characters, not sure about other games.
All of those can be found in English if you’re wondering.

ParticipantYeah, you should post what systems they’re for and how I can play em’ in English.

ModeratorFFL1 and FFL2 (both original GB) allow you to pick the class/type of all 4 starting characters.
FFL1 actually lets you drop dead characters and replace them with fresh ones from the adventurers’ guild (with the exception of the "main" character, who must be in your party, even if dead, throughout the entire game). FFL2 requires you to stick with your party, although on the plus side it has robots :D
Other than that… uh… Seiken Densetsu 3 also allows you to choose stat ups on level up. Etrian Odyssey is like FFL1 (you can swap in and out any party members). I haven’t gotten into any other games I can think of that do that kind of thing, though.

ParticipantI’ve played Shin Megami Tensei for the past few hours. I must admit that I haven’t got into a new RPG like this for a long time.

KeymasterYuck, I haven’t heard good things about that one. I’d say FF5 but Taishi already said that.

ParticipantFrom what he(sarsamis) has said about Bleu Dargon so far, it actually seems like a somewhat decent game. Primarily for that one bell thing he was talking about that draws in all the enemies to you at once.
I was actually playing FF5 a few weeks ago, as well as FFT and got about halfway through them. I think Wizardry and AD&D: Pool of Radiance might be good to play later. However, I’m sticking with Shin Megami Tensei, until I get too frustrated at not knowing what to do.

ParticipantI don’t think the problem with BD is being a bad game; it’s just that people think it’s pretty generic, and when you have Sakaguchi, Uematsu, and Toriyama all working on a game you expect it to be the next Chrono Trigger.

Participantwhy would you not know what to do in SMT? do they not tell you where to go or anything?
also, get a DS and Etrian Odyssey

KeymasterYea everything I’ve read says that Blue Dragon is generic visually, it’s too easy, the story is non-existent for the first 20 hours, and some other things.

Well, it’s a bit better than a Phantasy Star game, because I know what I need to do, however, I’ve been everywhere available and the only place I could think about going would probably involve me grinding up 10-20 levels before I could stand a chance against the random encounters.
Etrian Odyssey sounds like a ballin gayme, too bad I don’t have rich parents to get me a DS to play it with.
