So I started up the first Shadow Hearts game at the behest of several people. I'd finally broken down and got the series (apparently $100 is actually pretty reasonable for all 3)…
So far, I'd give it an A for atmosphere and a C+ for playability.
The first portion takes place in late 19-teens China, which makes for an interesting setting. Surprisingly the Japanese army's advance is portrayed accurately. Lots of spookiness, several bizarre occurrences, so on, so forth. One incredibly bad FMV where an old lady insists on making sound effects for all the stuff that's happening.
The game has a bizarre mechanic where you have to purge accumulated malice from slain enemies every so often. I do it compulsively (never got beyond the teal-ish color so far) which makes it annoying.
Not sure yet whether it's worth playing. I think it's getting better, but it's still more frustrating than entertaining.
On the plus side, one of the major characters is a Taoist adept…
