ModeratorI started playing this yesterday (after my supply of Skies of Arcadia ran dry).
I’m enjoying it mostly, but this game seems horribly unbalanced. The Circus stage (in Chapter 2) was easy… until I hit the last guy, who wasted 6 members of my party in two spells. I’m glad my hero was chilling in the back (I usually keep him back for just such reasons… but he’s getting underleveled as a result).
Then there was the undead ambush in the shadow temple (just finished that). The skellies were really rough! Only my warriors could tangle with them on nearly even ground, and only the wizards could really finish them off. I’m starting to think knights are worthless, except Mae who’s a decent tank… and Hans the archer is dealing 2 damage per hit.
Also, healers are waaay too hard to level. At least give them XP proportional to the level of the person they’re healing :/

KeymasterYea that circus boss is a tough one. So you had to send your underleveled Hero in there to finish him off?
I remember sending my best warriors in there to death, one by one, using the Power Ring on them before they head in. Freeze 3 is scary at that point.
One thing I like about that game is the balance shifts often. Soon the Knights will be sweet again, any of them, once you are able to buy Power Spears (I think now you can in Chapter 3). However there are so many knights and knight hybrid’s (Guntz, Kokichi, etc). Archers definitely become obsolete at that point, but can kind of make a comeback towards the end with better weapons (Lyle is awesome).
Did you get Arthur?
I definitely agree about the exp from heal / defensive spells should be more than just 10-20. I think SF2 fixed that.

ModeratorYeah, I got Arthur.
I remember Shining Force 2 having not only more balance but also a better plot or at least more reasons for battles.
"The enemy wants to prevent us from reaching X! You’ve got to break through them!"
I think that’s been 3 of them so far.

KeymasterYep I liked that 2 had more RPG elements, being able to walk around towns and walk into battles (even random ones).

ParticipantThe first one is a classic, but I enjoyed part 2 more. Never really was much of a Sega fan, but the Shining Force series was one of the few that drew me to its light at times. Only gripe is some of the characters names were lame or just didn’t really suit them. :smoke:

KeymasterYea 2 was a much more complete game. Some things I liked in SF1 more though, like when you were promoted you could get +9 attack for like Zylo or +11 agility for Tao…the random level up stats were nice.

ModeratorUgh. I rememebr when I played Shining Force…
On the first stage, I crushed enemy after enemy until I reached the boss… who got a critical hit on my full-life hero, OHKOing him.
Ugh.

KeymasterYep Yep…that’s what Niahak would complain about, the random damage / critical hits. But you know what…be more cautious with your hero! He’s the only guy who can’t die….Gotta pick your spots with Max until later in the game when he is promoted and his defense picks up.

ParticipantI bought the gba remake the other day and this games sweet, tho I like the 2nd better.I’m wondering who was everyone’s favourite character’s to use because my party was pretty pathetic at the end. This game is awesome tho,I might have to look for the sf2 cartridge at brothers house, just to reminisce. Also I like Max better than Bowie :puke:

KeymasterYou like Max more than Bowie?
Thing about Max is he is so terrible until you can promote him (well he’s good at the very beginning but then is weak compared to like Luke / Gort and the Knights). Then when you promote Max his defense and HP just skyrocket.
Everyone’s favorite character in SF1 or SF2?
I’d have to do some thinking…but with SF 1 I love Guntz the Steam Knight…give him the Running Ring or Running Pimento and he’s just unstoppable. I used to like Zylo a lot but I think his attack can be porous at times. Also Bleu has been a favorite of mine the last few times through even if he takes a lot of work to make good.
My favorite SF2 character’s, I’d have to think about that for a while. Gerhalt is probably one of them. Basically I like character’s that do not have terrain issues because you can just give them a Running Ring or Running Pimento and they can haul ass around the battlefield…this is one of my pet peeves with Knights / Paladins because Deserts / Mountains / Forests just slow them down too much.
Any differences you noticed in the GBA version of SF1? I should get it just for the hell of it, and to be able to play it portable. Once I finish FFIV DS of course :)

ParticipantI liked Max but I think I may of just over powered him compared to most of the other members, but Zylo’s been my favourite.I’ve only played through once so I haven’t tried everyone out to their full potential.
I think the remake is the same but most notably there’s 3 new characters:
Narsha-Ramladus daughter.I can’t remember her first class but she promotes to a guru, she was useful for casting attack and being pretty strong herself.
Zuika-He’s an assasin.I never used him much after the first few battles.
Mawlock-He’s a card master thing(You gather cards from listening to the SF members stories or from chests). He was at first to slow for me to bother with him but I just started copying Kane’s card so he could use desoul instead of a normal attack, which proved useful.
After each chapter theres little side battles which includes these three trying to make their way to join Max.
