ModeratorI think this deserves its own thread. I was surprised that sonic had never seen Shogun. Who here has seen it, who has not seen it? If you have seen it whatcha got to say about it?

This was my favorite mini-series in TV history. So good…

KeymasterIt was a mini-series, not a movie?
I remember 11th grade I had Eastern Civ and got to watch this. I don't remember much though, other than a warrior falling down a mud-hole or something and then killing himself in shame?

ModeratorThey made a condensed version which was a 2-hour movie. It chopped the story to hell. If you haven't seen the full mini-series you are missing out on a real gem. Spend a weekend sometime, veg out, and watch it.

ModeratorSince sonic is doing a mod for this time period I think the full version of "Shogun" is mandatory watching… See if you can rent the entire mini-series from somewhere.
And in case you need more motivation:
"The mini-series was one of the highest-rated programs in NBC history"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sh%C5%8Dgun_(TV_miniseries)
"The success of the miniseries was credited with increasing awareness of Japanese culture in America. In the documentary The Making of Shōgun, it is stated that the rise of Japanese food establishments in the US (particularly sushi houses) is attributed to Shōgun. It was also noted that during the week of broadcast, many restaurants and movie houses saw a decrease in business. The documentary states many stayed home to watch Shōgun — unprecedented for a television broadcast. "

ModeratorI got through about half of this – my patience then was not nearly what it is now.
I recall when I did watch it – which was about 10 years ago – it had still not been reprinted since the original printing, and a copy of the miniseries was worth over $100. Had to borrow it from a family friend.
I loved the book, though. It certainly deserves a reading or two! Not quite Three Kingdoms – and not historical, of course, with the primary Japanese warlord really being a mix of a couple of the historical ones. And the miniseries certainly did justice to it.

ModeratorQuote:I got through about half of this – my patience then was not nearly what it is now.If you're not the kind who can immerse yourself in a long movie/story then ya Shogun probably isn't for you. Watching this mini-series is kinda like watching all 3 Lord of the Rings movies in one weekend. But if you can immerse yourself into a long story, this is the best mini-series in TV history and a MUST watch if you're interested in medieval Japan.
I expect a full report from sonic on this mini-series before his mod is released :)
