KeymasterJunsui has returned to update lordyuanshu.com once again. It has been awhile since the last time I did a major update it seems; however, this will be one of, if not the last update I do on the site in its current format. As soon as Joomla! 1.5 is released (by the end of this month) and I graduate from college (in 3 weeks) lordyuanshu.com will be getting a hefty makeover. Let the anticipation swell people, it’s gonna be good times (I would expect the site to be completely revamped by no later than June 1st).

ParticipantGood to hear.
Who is that in your avatar, the one with the swords? I know I’ve seen that picture before…

ParticipantI played that game for a short time, I think it was from there. They had artwork displayed on the loading screens.

KeymasterIt’d be nice if there was a MMORPG that I could really get into someday, .hack style (anime about a virtual reality MMORPG). I played FFXI for about a year, quit for about a year then played it a few more months. It’s a pretty cool game, but takes entirely too much time/money/effort for me, which makes it undesirable in the end. That’s a shame since I really loved it at first for being such an immersive online experience. In the end it was a big hassle because they made it extremely difficult to make money in the game unless you wanted to exploit some questionable tactics, and also made it so you basically need all 6 people in your party, which is extremely aggravating at times since there is always an underplayed class which is needed in every party (IE white mage from 0 to ~30 and paladin/some tanking class after that), and those people who know they are in demand are gigantic whores. Also you get to see just what people are made of in events that are supposed to promote friendship, where you can find every North American pushing and shoving and virtually stampeding over the guy that just helped them on the last mission, all so they can be sure to get some stupid holiday item while they still have the chance (think beenie baby mentality and you see what i mean about americans and selfish trendiness). I got my fun from the game and before quitting i made sure to have some fun in prison with the game masters (I ended it by standing atop the busiest area in the game and shouting obscenities and deriding people for being retards).
On a similar note, I have a friend who plays World of Warcraft. This game is designed to deal with all the issues stated above, and takes very little time to actually have fun with (though of course you can play as much as you like). They actually reward you with double experience for being offline (up to 2 weeks getting you double exp for a whole level). The game still has its issues but it seems as if Blizzard is in much, MUCH better shape than Square Enix on the MMORPG front (obviously, since World of Warcraft is the most popular MMORPG). However, one major issue I see is that the game hasn’t as much replay value. Sure you can start as many characters as you like but the same thing gets boring after awhile, since they have a much lower level cap and it takes such little time to get to the top. This might take a few years, so I guess you can say that makes the replay value decent, but personally I will always want to go back to a game like Earthbound, and would never go back to a game i got sick of playing after 3 years, so I guess that’s the difference for me anyway.

ParticipantThe problem I have with MMORPGs is that they have so much to do, which is great for a couple of weeks, but then you find that only a few things are really important depending on the game. I can’t seem to stay on any given MMORPG for more than two months at a time.
MUDs are always an option, with the literate MUDs having some decent people, but I never really got into them either.

KeymasterI’ve had a small interest in text-based RPGs but never made the effort to actually find and play one. As far as having such a large number of options; yes its intimidating at first, especially since I am one who will try and find absolutely everything in a game. FFXI was actually horrible in this way as well, since many of the missions and quests are entirely criptic and you basically have to look up anything you want to get done online because its near impossible to figure it out for yourself due to the sheer amount of wandering around you can do before you manage to get lucky and talk to the right NPC. Back to the point though, if you want to enjoy a game like that, you really have to just play it as if you are living it. In other words, kick back and relax, do whatever you feel like doing and don’t worry about being the best or missing things. Just like real life, there is no rewind button and if you spend your time beating yourself up for missing out on something, you will inevitably miss out on even more. This mentality makes games like Morrowind and Obilvion fun for awhile at least (since there is no one around to make fun of your crappy leather boots you are still wearing at level 50). If you have a group of friends to play with though, that’s really the only way I ever found the MMORPG to be endearing.

ParticipantEverything is a tasty lime green, though I guess it probably has to do with the skins.
You have to remember, though; the very thing that makes you a nerd is that your enthusiasms are totally unrelatable and non-marketable to most of the world. For example, anime and celibacy. - Seanbaby
