ModeratorI picked up a copy of this game several months ago. Seeing as I picked up an NES (and several games – unfortunately not a copy of DoaE for my IN abode, but those things are rare as hell), I started playing through it.
I love this game and I don't know why. The empty feeling of the levels, the lonely themes in a few of the songs, the bleak intro message, the decent-but-not-overwhelming challenge, the blue round creatures that help you out even as you're actively destroying their home… it's way, way better than Metroid and most other action-adventure-rpgish games on the NES. And there are a lot of them; only Crystalis holds a candle to this game.
I finished it tonight in a marathon (to me) 3-hour session. The passwords were too annoying to do more than once or twice. But I finally managed to beat this game, something that's eluded me since I first rented it as a much younger Niahak. Now I don't see why I hadn't beaten it – it's actually pretty easy if you know what to do, explore, and pay attention to the hints for the puzzles.
Also, DragonAtma, I noticed you posted in the GameFAQs board for this game so I figured I'd post up a topic here :)

ModeratorHeeey, somebody noticed!
Did you ever try exploring the Great Southern Unknown? Specifically, that's the area outside the map. Yes, passwords are a pain in the neck, but some are quick to enter. Try this one:
6666 6666 6666 6666
hhhh hhhh hhhh hhhh
…oh, and expect to be resetting a lot, as reality shifts around a lot in this crazed, non-euclidean area…

ModeratorYeah, I didn't think to mess around much with the Great Unknown stuff. It sounds interesting, but painful on actual hardware ;)
I do wonder what you're messing around with when you go there, though. It's got to be something in memory that's being expressed as a map (similar to the "minus zone" James found in DoaE).

KeymasterThe Great Southern Unknown? Hmm, sounds pretty weird. If it's like the zone 0 in DoaE it has potential I'm sure.
Never heard of this game though. Maybe I'll DL it some day.

ParticipantThis sure is a fun game, marrying a solid space shooter with overhead action segments. The music is incredible too, as if woven from dreams. :ninja: Too bad I only played it for a short time. It needs some slow, tender loving care. Like a fine piece of barbecued meat. Whoa oh no, a female protagonist in a NES-era game. Don't lose your gym shorts there, fellas! LOL :ninja:
What!? Zhuge Liang controls even the heavens?

ModeratorQuote:Maybe I'll DL it some day.I know it sounds weird, but this game is so much better on actual hardware (Great Unknown aside). I think it's because it's so timing-sensitive. I tried playing it a couple times on emulator a year back, but it felt really imbalanced for some reason.
My friends have expressed similar complaints when playing Tetris Attack on emulator. Feels completely different. Most games are fine on emulator, but I think this is one of the ones that really shines in its original format.
I know it's a bit difficult to find the hardware (I actually got a Gen-X, which is a cheap knockoff NES/Gen combo, since I had no Genesis either) but it's worth it :)
