ModeratorI’m surprised there’s not a topic for this game around, seeing as it’s close to the rarest RPG S-E has made. Or was, until the re-release on the PSP.
I started playing this for the second time, and it’s a lot of fun. All the characters are really non-standard, death is rampant (though it’s your means of recruiting, so it makes sense) and along the "best" ending path you have to deal with some pretty shady characters. It gets a bit ridiculous on hard mode though, with some bosses killing your party every turn (you just need to pray "guts" triggers so you can auto-item your party back to life).
I started playing this since I heard about the third game in the series out for DS soon. It’s a tactical RPG so I’m not that interested (I find them really stressful) but it reminded me that I have the PSX one…
Also, has anyone here played VP2 (Silmeria)? I hear it’s good, and I will probably end up getting it… just not sure if it’s worth playing right away.

KeymasterI only played the original Valkyria Profile. It was decent, got towards the end but stopped playing. I felt going through that you get so many characters and don’t really have a chance to utilize them, and was using some of the earlier characters for a long while. I forget all of them at this point, that was back in 2000 or whatever. Hard to believe it was so rare, I didn’t think it was a big thing getting it back then. But I guess you could say that about a lot of those PSX rpg’s.

ModeratorYeah, I’m hitting the part of the game where you get a ton of worthless characters, especially on hard mode.
I like the stories for each character, they’re entertaining and often inter-related, but then you do get a ton of characters with no uses…

KeymasterI did like the stories as well. A little depressing and they all seemed to be in their own little world, but for the most part they were all well-told.
Not sure if I played on Hard, I feel like I did. What are the options, easy or hard? or is there a medium?

ModeratorEasy, Normal, Hard.
Easy can’t get all the ending or characters.
Normal can’t get all the characters, but can get all endings.
Hard can get all of both, and an after-game dungeon as per usual Tri-Ace fare.
More games should be depressing :P

ModeratorFigured I’d update since I got Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria.
So far (~14 hrs in):
-More characters than VP1
-No time constraints
-Much more interesting but also tougher combat; it’s like a position-based game slapped on top of the original VP fare, and you get items for knocking body parts off enemies
-Skill system is weird and I don’t really see the point; any character can get any skill given the right items, but few skill points to use
-Story is decent but moving far too slowly
Overall, I’m not certain I’ll stick with it. It seems like the game is expecting me to grind much more than I have been; I’ve got a half dozen einherjar I have yet to "free" (the equivalent to transfer in this one, sorta) and every new area I come to I really struggle with the battles. Way too many of them have insects or spirits (both of which can *only* be damaged by casters or archers) which is just a good way to piss me off.
I want to stay with it because combat is so much better than VP1. But the story is just incredibly slow and it’s telegraphing the next plot twist a ton (I started seeing it coming about 4 hours ago).
