We’ll see how things go. At this point I think Obama is the better leader if only because he’ll do wonders for our diplomatic efforts – and I think we’ll need all the help we can get in that regard if the economy slips much more.
Seeing how smoothly his campaign was run only reinforces that feeling. If he can help the government run half as well as his campaign did, he’ll be an impressive leader.
Either president will have to raise taxes or slash programs in a big way. To be honest, it may be that no matter who would’ve won, they probably would only serve one term. Pulling out of Iraq will be touchy at best and the economy isn’t going to make anybody happy regardless of who caused it.
Re: more government programs… honestly I don’t think either leader would’ve helped there any. McCain would probably step up national security (TSA, DHS) if not military spending, and Obama wants to increase education and health care. If the past 8 years are any indication (and they might not be, to be fair) the government would still expand under the right-wingers.
Bob Barr might’ve helped but I doubt he got more than 2% overall. He sounded like a pretty shady libertarian, anyway; too bad Ron Paul didn’t stand a chance in the primaries, he sounds a lot better.
The Republican regime of the last 8 years has really fucked up. More than anything they’ve made people just give Obama the keys to the country and he’ll have the Senate and House to do whatever he likes with, though it sounds like they won’t get the 60 – 40 split at the Senate.
Regarding what Niahak said about Gov’t expanding even under the Right Wingers….The GOP needs to get a younger leader, and get back to their past ideals. Less Gov’t. Bush blurred the lines with his stupid wasteful gov’t spending – but the gov’t spending is not going to get any better with Barack. Considering the state of the economy I doubt he’ll be raising taxes immediately, people just don’t have the means for that.
Obama wants to increase education…groan…has any gov’t education program NOT been a waste? Grad Standards, No Child Left Behind…it just doesn’t work, because the money doesn’t go straight to the classroom. It’s always some gimmicky bullshit that never works.
I think people in 4 years are going to be sick of all the Gov’t that is bound to come our way. Either that or the liberal media will start today with how the economy has already rebounded under the great savior Barack Obama…. huohu
