ParticipantHmm… not sure what was supposed to be funny about that article… Olive Garden? Did I miss something? :?:

ParticipantNew funny story:
New Type of Alien Planet Is a Steamy 'Waterworld'
The first sentence of the story made me laugh:
Scientists have discovered a new type of alien planet — a steamy waterworld that is larger than Earth but smaller than Uranus.
Wow, Uranus is really big! You must do a lot of drinking and clubbing near college campuses heh?
I also liked this comment:
Ever notice that all the scientific instruments searching for intelligent life are pointed away from earth
I know, I have nothing better to do. :p

ParticipantWell, for your 1st advice, I don't "always go to strip clubs" and in fact I am only going now once in a while because I'm still single. If I was in a relationship, I wouldn't even need to go to a strip club in the first place. ;) Although I can understand that mentioning that in a profile can be a turn-off, I think women who think that single guys aren't doing things like that (while they are still single) are just delusional at best. It's just a little bit of honesty I am putting out there, even though I realize sometimes there's definitely such thing as "too much information" but whatever. Aside from that, you're right that women will generally not find "modding" interesting though, but in my defense, I don't exactly say that either. I only told this girl because she's a programmer and she found it interesting. :)
The 2nd advice makes sense and I agree with it, but I just draw a blank when I'm under pressure. Maybe I should prepare before going on a date the next time. (Assuming there will ever be a next time…)
For 3rd advice, I actually never do this. I do -not- ask women for their info. The 2 strippers that gave me their info actually volunteered this information. I never asked them for it. As for the girls from the dating site, I simply message them through the site, so I don't ask them for any info either. Believe me, I completely agree with this item also, so I never ask women for their info! :)

ParticipantQuote:Eh, don't worry; you're far from the only one to have dating disasters. Back in 2003 I was dating someone, and someone else wanted to date me… so she spread lies about me to my GF until I was dumped, But the time my ex-gf found out that they were, indeed, lies, it was too late, and the third wheel OF DOOM was permabanned. And that's why I haven't dated anyone since 2003 and have no intention to do so within the next few centuries.
EDIT: OMG I just realized that DragonAtma just made a reference to himself that was not on the 3rd person! :O
Wow, since 2003? That's quite a dry-spell heh? Actually, I seriously suck at dating, so for me, it has been longer than that. After college, I had a bunch of "job-hopping" experiences from city to city ( not really intentional, mind you, that's just how it worked out ) so I never had the chance to really settle down and look for someone until recently…
Update: She messaged me back to reply to my message where I asked her about that. She said that everything was great, except she was looking for someone that had an established circle of friends, and that does other activities with such friends. Since I have practically no friends in real life ( primarily due to all the moving ) she was not interested. I guess she thought I might be "too needy" if she was the only "real person" in my life. It sure makes me feel like the "looser nerd with no real friends, so I don't even want to come near him!" type of guy… :/
I am so bummed by this… Back in 2010 on my last job, I was sitting next to a girl that was a programmer, that was doing some smart-phone programming with some friends and family and selling their software, that was really smart, nice, cute, sweet, and unbelievably hot. Unfortunately, she was married. She had raised the bar of my expectations, as far as what I wanted in a match. As time passed by, I've "lowered my bar" of expectations, thinking things like "well, maybe she doesn't have to be in the software / game industry, maybe she doesn't have to be all -that- smart, maybe she doesn't have to like games, etc."
Well this girl I met today just completely re-raised the bar again all the way up there… Now once again I feel like I will never find someone quite like her. This is a little pathetic, but it almost makes me want to cry… ( Well she probably won't find these boards so who cares if I say that. ) I mean she just blew my mind. I know I don't really -know- her, but everything I learned about her today was just amazing in my opinion. Now I'll probably have to wait a couple of months to a year before my dating bar of expectations lowers again to something realistic.
Oh, and the BDSM club I mentioned? That's actually real. They have one about 10 miles from where I live. I guess I can go there and at least check out the place for a while, even if I don't actually do anything. ( I'm not the type of person to jump in bed with someone just like that, but seriously, that option is becoming more and more attractive as I become more and more disillusioned about dating… )
Also, thanks guys, I guess if I was on the other side of the screen reading this, I might find it mildly amusing and interesting too, but I also realize that's not the purpose of this board / topic. It sure helps to vent a little sometimes though…

ParticipantQuote:Hey you're back, how were your dates :p?It's good to see that you're still doing fine, took your time dealing with DoaE stuffs. Right now I have no DoaE question for you but I hope you will get time to check the board regularly in case we have problem by accident.
Take care…
I should make a topic titled "The misadventures of MeteorStrike's disastrous dating life!" I just had another crapper and I felt like venting a little bit.
The latest mishap? Met this girl from the dating site, really cool, smart, cute, funny, great friendly personality, and a wonderful smile. She was even studying at DigiPen to be a graphics programmer. While discussing, I actually did mention the "NES debugger" thing, and she even found it quite interesting!
She seemed like she was really interested and kept on asking me all kinds of questions about me in general. We even went for a little walk afterwards while continuing the talk. I didn't really know what to say too much, so I guess I made the mistake of not asking enough about her, but oh well. I was definitely interested, but I guess I'm just the shy type… Plus, she dominated the QA session too, so…
At the end, I told her to message me from the site if she was interested in meeting up again, so that it would be up to her. (no pressure kind of deal) And right then and there, right to my face, she said while smiling (as she had during the rest of the date), "Actually, I can tell you right now, I probably won't want to meet up with you again. But you're a really great guy. Take care!" I mean wow… Now I'm left scratching my head wondering WTF went wrong there. She did a complete 180 of what I thought she was thinking! Oh well!
She also seemed to have this obsession with trying to guess my Myers-Briggs personality type. Maybe she was asking so much about me merely to figure that out, and then feel like she "figured out someone she just met" which is kind of ironic that a smart girl like her would feel like she can truly "figure out" someone from meeting them for an hour. I behave different on different circumstances anyway. I think everyone does, especially when they are on a first date.
Next up: going to a BDSM club! I think at this point I'm done with dating! I'll just get my kinks elsewhere! :) The stripper I was messaging before was clearly not really interested, and I met another stripper at another club that pretended to be interested too. (Duh, I wonder why) I might go back to that one a few times just for fun, but seriously, I'm not so stupid as to think a stripper is interested in anything other than money.
For the record, I've never been stupid enough to believe that, but I always figured, what the heck, right? Exchanging e-mails is not a biggie anyway. Of course, it's pointless, as the times it has happened to me have proven this. At least the fantasy of dating a stripper becomes a little bit more real for a few days when that happens, heh? ;)
OK, I think I'm done ranting about girls now. I apologize to the people on this board who are expecting DOAE discussions and stuff. I just felt the need to vent a little, but seeing as how I'm done dating, I doubt I will annoy anyone with my rants about that anymore… sorry! :)

ParticipantAlso, since there is a chance I might look into that in the middle of doing everything else during a little break, it might help if you could post some pics about this "gender" thing and explained it a little bit, since I have never even played this game…
MeteorStrike
ParticipantAre you using a debugger? If not, and this is truly "the only thing you couldn't locate" then I'm impressed! :)
Anyways, I would love to help, but I got a lot on my plate right now. Aside from work stuff that I'm lagging behind a little, I also have a program I need to finish that I'm working at home, and then I got the stuff that MidKnight wanted about the maps. I'll keep note of this, but if you're still looking for this info, there's a good chance you will find it before I even get a chance to load the game. I haven't even gotten a chance to transfer Midnight's patch of the alleged arise bug. (But it looks like he's already looking into it, so I guess I don't need to.)
MeteorStrike
ParticipantThe real question is, did DragonAtma make his patch to work with a ROM that has a header, or with a ROM that has no header? This is most likely the issue.
DragonAtma: I think it would help if you mentioned that. Just look at the original ROM file you used before patching, and look at the file size in bytes. If it's a perfect multiple of 1024 bytes, it probably doesn't have a header. If it's a number such that ( x * 1024 ) + 512 = File size, where x is an integer, then that means it probably has a header. This is the easiest way to tell if your ROM has a header or not.
sonic.penguin: I would recommend you do the same thing. If DragonAtma says he does not have a header in his, but you do, then you will need to remove the header first before applying the patch. On the other hand, if DragonAtma says he has a header but yours doesn't, then you will need to add a header to yours first, or find a copy of the ROM that already has a header.
The easiest way I know to remove a header is to use Geiger’s Snes9x Debugger emulator. It will tell you if your ROM has a header before loading it, and it will only load the game if you accept to have the header removed.
The easiest way I know to add a header is… actually, I've never done this, but I'm sure there are tools out there to do it. You can probably just add 512 dummy bytes at the beginning of the ROM file, then apply the header, and then remove the 512 dummy bytes at the beginning of the ROM file again, and you're done. I don't use hex editors, but I imagine there should be some out there that let you "insert" bytes into a file…
In any case, this shouldn't be so complicated! :)
EDIT: OK I just checked that download link, and the file size is 1,048,576 bytes, which means sonic.penguin's ROM has no header. I'm guessing that means DragonAtma's ROM has a header, and is 1,049,088 bytes in size…

ParticipantThis ghost raising thing reminded me of a similar issue I noticed a long time ago. My memory is fuzzy on it, but IIRC, it had something to do with the game not clearing the info from a last battle. Try fighting a group of 5 enemies and killing all of them, and immediately afterwards, fight a group of 2 – 4 enemies where someone uses raise.
This just sounds like the value you might be checking for Alive status is not first being compared for the index range of the total enemy count. So enemy 5 has a status of Dead because he was killed in the previous battle, but since there are only 4 enemies in this new battle, his status was not updated / cleared, and your code might not be checking for index out of bounds ( i.e. checking to make sure it doesn't test anyone on slot number > total number of enemies that are fighting in this current battle. )
Of course, I have no idea how you wrote the mod, I'm simply theorizing how such a bug could possibly arise. :) ( Hah hah, get it? arise? raise? )

ParticipantThere was a post MidNight made a while ago where he copy-pasted the message I sent him from youtube. It contains information on how to find NPC sprite data for any map, given the map ID.
MeteorStrike
ParticipantOHHH wait, so when you say "opening bio screen" do you mean if you don't press anything for a few minutes in the title screen and then they show you all the important generals, and they have a little bit of info for each one? Like "Zhang Fei – The only man in ancient China strong enough to face Lu Bu in hand-to-hand combat" type of thing?
I thought those would have used the same colors and everything as they would in-game.
And the "oath" picture is the one they show right after the 3 come together at the intro and they say "we shall die on the same day, blabla" right?
MeteorStrike
ParticipantColors can literally be stored anywhere. There is no "color" format the way there is a "Pattern format" hence the reason programs like Tile Layer Pro can't auto-detect the colors used for the Patterns, even for Patterns that only use 1 color set.
Anyways, your best bet might be to add a breakpoint on the section the game notoriously uses for loading the Palettes, but I forget the address. My laptop is off right now so I can't check. What exactly do you want to edit? Just the colors of the picture that shows up when the brothers make their oath? I'm guessing you changed that picture and now you want to change the colors too?
EDIT: From pure memory, I think it might have been something like 0x1E0 -> 0x1EF in RAM or something similar… but I'm not sure…
MeteorStrike
ParticipantOh I figured I should mention that I will need to look at this at a later time. It's tax week for me, and I also have catch-up at work too. :p
But honestly, the best person suited to "fix" a mod is the person who created the mod. So if Midnight made this patch, he should be able to explain why this is happening.
He either did it intentionally, or he used certain data which he overrode as part of his mod due to running out of space ( and he may or may not be aware of this side effect ) or he just completely mucked up something he shouldn't. I'm guessing he did this intentionally to use that space for something else in his mod… Otherwise, let this be a lesson why you can't just add code all over the place without verifying that the space isn't used for something else! :)
MeteorStrike
ParticipantHey.
No, sorry, I'm not a mod player… I had mentioned this as part of my 9000-byte rant about mods which I had decided not to post because it might come across as a little bit… what's the word… bitchy? :)
I think the only mod I've ever played was Outlands for Zelda 1, and the only reason I played it was to complete my Zelda 1 map generator. ( OK, I guess I've messed around a little bit with some of those Metroid hacks for a few minutes, etc. ) I'm more of a "purist" when it comes to playing games. It's one of the reasons I have no interest in editors. ( Although there are some very-few exceptions but I'll leave it at that. )
As far as your question, I understand what you said about Tile Layer Pro, but if you open up the game using it, you can scroll down to that ROM address and see the title Patterns. Then, you can figure out which Pattern is used for which section of the title screen, and based on that, you can figure out all the start addresses for each Pattern. ( The 8×8 pixel images )
You can then use that info with your fidian program, I suppose, but the point is, the Patterns are not stored from left to right and top to bottom as they show on the screen, so you need to figure out that on your own. However, simple visual inspection should let you know this info pretty easily.
For example, if the title Pattern images were literally:
"D E S T I N Y"
then it might be stored in the ROM as:
"E S T N Y D I"
So the Pattern at B810 is "E" the Pattern at B850 is "S" the Pattern at B890 is "T" and so on. Then you can figure out what to insert where…
EDIT: I don't remember the exact size of a Pattern right now, but I think it's -not- 0x40. It should be 8 x 8 pixels and each pixel is 2 bits, so I -think- it was 16 bytes per Pattern… using Tile Layer Pro, you should be able to see the start address of each Pattern though…
