Dragon Warrior II Acquiring Boat Tantegel
Lianport
Now that you have the ship there are a million things you can do. Okay not that much but the game isn’t really linear at this point for a while. That said you will get clues from the surrounding villages so you have some direction assuming you’re talking to everyone. Of course the fact that you can get just about anywhere means you’ll likely get off on an island where the enemies are much tougher than you (at least at some point) so be prepared to run in this case.
From Lianport go directly north on your Ship. You’ll run into some light blue shoals. Search them to find some Tresures! Yep, they are really called Tresures. Go back down to Lianport, to that green clad merchant via the Silver Key door. He gives you the Echoing Flute, useful later on.
Tantegel Castle
East of Hamlin is a new land and further east is Tantegel Castle. If you notice this is the land of Alefgard but a mini-version of it. There are some new weapons at the shop, notably the Giant’s Hammer and the Iron Helmet.
Charlock Castle
If you brought your boat to the south part of Tantegel you can get to Charlock Castle easy.
As you enter just walk to the staircase in the first room. Continue along to the second staircase. In the next area go to the northeast staircase and take it, and then you’ll have two more quick staircases in short rooms. Now in the center you’ll have three options. The southwest one circles back, while the two middle ones lead to separate areas. Take the southmost one in the center first and that leads to the Sword of Erdrick. This sword is pretty poor compared to the Light Sword. Backtrack and take the west staircase now. This leads to what was the end of Dragon Warrior I. Go north and cast Stepguard and then use the Gold Key to get the treasures – 120 Gold, Wing of Wyvern, Lottery Ticket and the Medical Herb. Go east and talk to the Grandson of the Dragonlord. Tell him you’ll defeat Hargon and he’ll tell of the five crests and Rubiss.
Zahan
This is a bit of a trip to get to Zahan. On ship, go to the north part of the Spring of Bravery. Go a little east from here and then north a bunch until you get to an island with a Monolith and an island with Zahan Village.
Go to the dog in the east part of town. This game has a thing with dogs. This one brings you to a bush that has the Golden Key if you search. The Golden Key opens the golden doors, of course.
The damage steps to the north (take the west path, the east is empty) will lead to the Magic Loom. You need the Jailor’s Key so come back to this shortly.
Leaf of the World Tree
From Zahan go north a little on boat and then west all the way. You’ll see a desert island with a tree on it. Go there and search to find a Leaf of the World Tree. Now you can only have one of these at a time but if you use it then return to get a new one (revives your character).
Wellgarth Town
West of the World Tree is more land with the city of Wellgarth. You need a Golden Key to enter Wellgarth but you have one from Zahan remember. Check the weapon shop to see some ridiculous weapons and armor including the 65000 Gold Mink Coat, 21500 Shield of Strength, 16000 Light Sword and the 8000 Dragon Killer. These are way too expensive for you now but we’ll find a cheap way to get Gold soon.
Speaking of, go to the tool guy west of the armor shop. He has a blank item. Choose to buy it, it costs 2000 Gold. When you look in your inventory you’ll find that you bought the Jailor’s Key.
You’ll hear about Roge Fastfinger around here. Use your Golden Key in the northeast building and then the Jailor’s Key to open the eastern jail cell. Try to walk through the east wall and eventually you’ll be able to and you’ll see someone! This is Roge Fastfinger and he gives you the Watergate Key. You will use the Watergate Key in a bit.
++++ Big Cheat ++++
Now that you see all these expensive weapons and armor you probably want to buy them without fighting 2000 battles. Well good news, now that you have the Jailor’s Key there is something you can do.
Return to Midenhall and save. First go to the east part and enter the building, and use the Golden Key to get a bunch of meaningless treasures and the Token of Erdrick (not worthless). Then use the Silver Key. Enter that pathway and go north to some stairs. This is the jail. So use the Golden Key and Jailor’s Key to get to the guy in the southwest. This is the Evil Clown. Talk to him and a battle breaks out (make sure you have an inventory slot open!). After the battle (an easy one, although he is kinda dangerous) he will drop the Staff of Thunder. If the Evil Clown does not drop the Staff of Thunder you have a full inventory or you already have the Staff of Thunder in your inventory. Okay, so after getting this leave and sell the Staff of Thunder in Midenhall. Rest, Save, and quit your game. Start your game back up and the Evil Clown is back, he’ll drop the Staff of Thunder again, and you can sell it again!
You can do this until you reach the gold Cap for Dragon Warrior II which is about 65535.
With all this gold you can buy all the Mink Coats and Shield’s of Strength that you want.
Also now that you have the Token of Erdrick you can go south southeast Tantegel where the guy at the Monolith will trade you the Helmet of Erdrick for the Token of Erdrick. The monolith is basically directly west from Hamlin if you’re lost.
Beran – To get to Beran, one should go a little north of Wellgarth via ship and then travel eastward. This is Beran village. Nothing new at the weapon shop, you can talk to the people here to learn more about Rhone but you’re probably not ready for that.
Osterfair – Go to Midenhall and then sail directly south from the south cape of Midenhall. You’ll come to Osterfair.
As you enter, don’t go west but north first and then west and south. Ignore the warp and go to the dark spot and face east – use the Gold Key and it’ll open. Talk to the shop guy if you want and then grab his Magic Knife and Armor of Gaia. The Armor of Gaia is especially nice for the Prince.
Go back into the central area and you can talk to the weapon shop guy. He has Magic Armor but nothing else that’s especially unique. You’ll learn about some things you’ve probably already gotten (like the Gold Key) and also the guy in the weapon shop is wondering about the Armor of Gaia (yea, we just stole it). Talk to the King at the coliseum and he’ll ask you to fight. Fight the Saber Lion, it’s not too hard as it has low HP despite a high attack. You get the Moon Crest for this.
Cannock Castle – You can open the Jail doors and talk to the cellmates. But you could talk to them anyway. Instead go to the gold door and use the key to open it, grabbing the Shield of Erdrick.
Dragon’s Horn Tower – Go to the northern one, the one that you probably never went in. Go up two sets up stairs, and then search in the area shown in the picture about (basically search to the left against the wall). You’ll find the Dew’s Yarn.
Hamlin – Continuing our journey through previous areas, Hamlin has a gold key door we can enter. Then, use the Jailor’s Key to talk to the two Gremlins. But this time they are red and are Ozwargs. Not too tough to kill but they can call for help. Search in the northeast corner of this after the win and you’ll find the Water Crest.
Fire Shrine – The Fire Shrine has the Sun Crest. To get to the Fire Shrine go east of the World Tree. Enter and then go east but you’ll notice you can walk on the grass. Go north three spaces and then left one and search – you’ll find that Sun Crest.
Lighthouse – The lighthouse tower has a crest we want. So teleport to Hamlin or something and then sail west of Moonbrooke. You’ll see a tower.
On this first floor you’re going to have to go all the way west, south and then east. You’ll eventually make your way to the center where you can enter. You now have a four way and a staircase.
Go north for 48 Gold. Then go south from the four way, and go up that staircase. Follow the next few staircases up and grab the Chain Sickle.
Go back to the first fourway on the first floor. Go south and then west and take that staircase. South a little more in this new area for a staircase. West and north for another staircase. Now go east, north and west for another staircase going up. Follow this along and you’ll get to a Silver Key door. Use the Silver Key and go west (via the north path) to a staircase. You’ll see a purple gremlin so follow it and it turns into a wizard.
Follow the wizard to the far southwest staircase. Continue to follow him along until you get to a treasure chest. It is a trap! Three gremlins appear to join the Gremlin that was being an impostor. After you defeat these four you’ll get the Stars Crest. I think it’s the Star Crest actually.
Tuhn – Go southwest of Moonbrooke / Dragon’s Horn Towers. Or northeast of Beran. You’ll see a new continent and a few rivers you can sail down. Go down the upper one (closer to Dragon’s Horn Towers) until you get to the end of the river. Go off to the northwest and work your way north and east and you’ll see Tuhn. The encounter rate is insane around here and so are the monsters so take care.
Inside there are some new things like the Falcon Sword but nothing too special. Open the Gold Key door and if you have the Magic Loom and Dew’s Yarn (you should if you’re following this guide) then the old guy will make the Water Flying Cloth.
Go to the far north part of the town, via the northeast. You’ll see the dog walking around so you’ll know you can go back here. In the northwest you’ll find a Jailor’s Key door so go this way. Inside is the watergate. You have the Watergate Key from Roge Fastfinger who was in Wellgarth Village. Use this Watergate Key on the watergate and it’ll open the floodgates.
You need to rest a few days so that the guy can finish the Water Flying Cloth. Return to Beran and Save and turn the game off a few times. Return back to Tuhn but take a different route. Since you released the water gate you can take the southeastern river instead of the northern one so that you can sail all the way there. Inside the guy gives you the Water Flying Cloth and says it is for the Princess. It is +5 better than the Mink Coat even!
Tower of the Moon Fragment – Sail directly south of Tuhn to get to the Tower of the Moon. You’ll see a fourway intersection as you get in. Take the northwest path and go up the stairs. Now go south a room and up those stairs and get the 123 Gold. Back down the stairs and go east this time. You’ll see two stairs in this room but ignore them and go east and go down those stairs. There you will find the Medical Herb. Back to those two staircases you ignored and hit the northeast one going up. Hit the next set of stairs nearby. Go south on the following floor for 251 Gold Pieces and the Bamboo Stick.
Back at the staircase go east. Now you’ll be at another two way intersection with a Silver Key door in the way. Go this way and down the sets of stairs until you see an old guy and the Moon Fragment. If you took the east route where you initially saw the Silver Door you’d go up some stairs to the top of the tower with an empty chest. Dragon Warrior 2 seems to like having empty chests at the top of towers.
Malroth Cave – The Malroth Cavern is hard. Hopefully you’re around the 20’s in levels at least, with the best equipment. Your biggest problem will be enemies sapping your MP down.
Go directly north from the World Tree (which is east of Wellgarth if you forgot). You’ll come to a cave and some shoals, so use the Moon Fragment that you just got from the tower of the moon, and then you’ll be able to go in.
The lava takes off 1 damage as you walk on it. If you want to walk to the northwest through it you’ll get 140 Gold Pieces. Back at the start, go south and then west past the first two passages (one north and one south). Take the second north passage for a Medical Herb and then further along for the staircase.
In this area if you go in the first south room you’ll get a poison treasure chest. Instead just go west and south along the path and you’ll see a soldier on the other side of the lava. Go east past him and then north when you can for a 63 gold chest.
Back to the northwest corner of this big room and go through the lava and down the staircase. Use the Golden Key and go through. The first chest is another poison trap chest and the next one is 137 gold. Ignore the staircases here and go south and then east a little and take the north path. You’ll see a ton of staircases in this area.
Enter the southwestern one (not the very south one but the one that is southwest-most in the pack of about 10) and you’ll be on the lava basically. Go north for a Dragon’s Bane and then west down some stairs. The monsters around here will be ridiculous, with Mega Knights and Saber Lions and Metal Hunters.
As you see the old House of Healing looking guy he’ll bitch you out and then a friend of his will come. They are two Evil Clowns. You will likely be tired but defeat them and you’ll be able to go east towards the Eye of Malroth. Now that you have the Eye of Malroth cast outside or walk back (not fun).
Get ready to get back to Beran and prepare for the Road to Rhone.
