Dian Wei was my first choice as a character as I popped it in and got ready for a musou mode. I figured, Wei is alway my favorite and Dian Wei is right below Zhang He as one of my favorite Wei generals. He’s always been dominant with his axe and I figured it’d be the same with his kick ass wrecking ball. Unfortunately, I didn’t envision the reach of his wrecking ball to be this pitiful. Combine that with a hard-to-get-used-to Renbu and you have a character in severe decline. Don’t get me wrong, he still has value. But he is more for the advanced – for the beginner, ignore Dian Wei and his musou for a while (preferably until you have a baller horse).
His musou is nice, but at the end he leaves himself vulnerable to enemies running back in and jabbing at him which is an issue when you’re as slow as Dian is. Dian Wei is a character I would have loved to see get his regular axe back in DW6 Special. I also think his musou mode should have been saved until later – he needs to have the Wan Castle Battle in his musou.
Until then, prepare for a character who will be an immense challenge for you if you go through on Hard – you almost surely will need to build up at some points in Free Mode, or lean heavily on horse trampling. Guan Du for example you might as well just go into it with the expectation that you won’t be able to defeat generals quick enough to save Yan Jin / Bai Ma.
How to Unlock – Dian Wei is an initial Wei character.
