Not to my knowledge. Again, most people couldn’t deal with the difficulty so it wasn’t really heralded as a great game…something about it I loved though, just seemed like a really classic RPG harkening to the old days. And I just love those wars of attrition against every boss in this game.

Now that you mention it, it did seem a little like the old-school role-playing games. I bet the graphics are terrifying now… when it first came out it was state of the art 3D (with spinning battlefields!) and I remember the monsters were flat sprites which were rotated around and adjusted. Those early 3D games didn’t stand up very well against the test of time in terms of appearance.
July 1, 2008 at 3:30 pm #31346Lord Yuan ShuKeymasterhaha no not at all, the graphics are a little icky now.
This is why I say the 2d SNES Final Fantasy’s aged graphically MUCH better than the PSX ones. I mean, anyone played FFVII recently? With Cloud’s block fists? Very very pixely game.

All these fancy 3D graphics and it takes quite a bit of effort to match the absolutely gorgeous sprites that were used in those old SNES games. Not only are the 3D games blocky and plain by comparison, the lack of anti-aliasing in many of these games is just another terrible strike.
But we sure loved it when we played! I loved the FF VII graphics while playing that game…

Huh? For the DS? I’m surprised that bothers you at all. I’ve been playing it for a while (I’m about to go get Rosa back) and it hasn’t even registered as a concern. The sizes of the heads in the game are just big enough to have some good expression without being excessively huge. Frankly, I think they would look rather poor if they were scale to the bodies at that sort of size/resolution.
Are you playing, or are you just going by what you’ve seen?
I think they did a great job.
July 2, 2008 at 6:03 pm #31350Nemix FelmParticipantJust by what I’ve seen. Its not going to deter me from playing at all. IV is my favorite one out of the series. Its just odd to me. Reminds me of DK mode in Goldeneye.

What I see in the game is typical of mountains of role-playing games. :)
I guess you don’t see it a lot in games which try to create a very serious atmosphere, nor do you see it much at all on the PC. It is a console thing… and much more common on handhelds where limited graphics capabilities and screen resolution mean they have to come up with new ways to show expression and character.
July 2, 2008 at 7:29 pm #31352Nemix FelmParticipantI’m sure I’ll get used to it within moments of playing. Have you tried it yet?…

You bet! I’ve just defeated the dark elf and I’m about to rescue Rosa.

Cecil [Cover] = Tellah
Silence = Tall One
Dispell = Fat One (Wall Goes Down; Small One attacks Fat One)
Protect = All
Beatdown = Fat One
Silence = Small One
Beatdown = Tall One
Beatdown = Small One
But man those ice beasts are mean if you let them get around to attacking… I must have taken ~1000 damage to each party member whenever they used their ice breath attack…
July 3, 2008 at 12:57 am #31356Nemix FelmParticipantYou guys are amping me up to play it even more. Those 3 cunts are annoying. I bet they’re gonna be a pain.
July 3, 2008 at 1:06 am #31357Lord Yuan ShuKeymasterhehe good strategy.
Don’t you get a Flame Tongue type sword in that tower Cecil?

Sure do! You also get flame armor and a flame shield (which makes the fire dogs less annoying). You have to fight an ice dog to get the sword, of course (use Berserk). It is annoying when you get to the later floors and the turtle creatures start appearing. They absorb fire so Yang and Cecil heal it. This makes things interesting when you have taught Cecil the counterattack ability (a Decant given by Yang’s wife). I gave Tellah the Ice Rod and hoped that he could beat the turtle down along with Cid faster than I healed it. A few of those fights took a little while (I couldn’t be bothered to switch equipment in the battle — and those turtles give such good experience).
Monsters there were hitting for around 400 damage.
Was it always that high? Seems higher than I remember.
