ParticipantHey there!
I’m curious. What’s the best way to contact Lord Yuan Shu. I have some comments and questions about the guides that you’ve written, specifically for Suikoden: Tiekries.
Thanks!

ModeratorThis is probably the one of the best ways, actually.
I’m sure he’ll be able to answer this post by tomorrow.

KeymasterHey Darren…Niahak is right. The forum or anywhere on the site is a good place, I check here many times daily though happened to miss your post last night.
Anyway, most people with questions / comments on Suikoden Tierkreis have just been making them on the main site articles.
Or I suppose you could continue the Suikoden Tierkreis discussion on the forum already.
Either way, nice to have you – Lord Yuan Shu

ParticipantHey there!
No problem – I’ll reach out to you here, though this is more of a 1 on 1 discussion than 1 to many.
I work for a site called, mygamemug.com. Quick jist of it is: We help people find other like-minded gamers to game with. It’s a real company, real site, real users. Feel free to check it out.
We’re doing a spin-off on our user generated game content which will include guides and reviews.
The idea we’re playing with is, "micro-guides". Instead of focusing on 100+ page comprehensive walk-throughs, we’ll be focusing on micro guides that detail very specific portions of the game. For example: How to kill a specific boss as opposed to all bosses. Character/class/spec guide for a specific character. Story arc or dungeon guides for RPG’s.
In any case, I’m very interested in learning more about the mind-set that guide publishers have and some of the incentives you strive for when publishing your very extensive guides.
If possible, I’d love to chat with you on IM/phone about this. It’s much easier for me to bounce ideas around this topic.
Again, if you feel the forum is a good medium for this discussion – no problem – we can chat here. Though, it might be easier with a live chat or on e-mail.
Thanks!

KeymasterOh, so it’s not about Tierkreis :)
Really, I can’t be bothered for a live chat. I’m busy as shit, and this site is more of a hobby than business for me despite the $ made from the traffic / ads.
Anyway, it seems you are kind of a competitor if you are putting up ‘guides’ as well. I see what you’re saying about ‘micro-guides’…you see a lot more of that at sites like mahalo where users are able to edit open guides for games and put in boss strategies, etc.
Number one thing to focus on with guides is being concise, yet not leaving any important details out. My walkthroughs are long but that is only because RPG’s are long and I cover the entire game / all the sidequests.
Also, what we really do is internet marketing through search engines. This brings us our most traffic as we generally rank very high for all the relevant keywords in our content. So that’s the other thing to keep in mind while I’m writing guides – be keyword rich and find a way to bring the more important keyphrases into a more prominent role so that we can continue to haul in the traffic over competitors. And gather quality links coming in.
I guess this has mostly been tips about the intrawebs but I think as far as guides are concerned – be concise yet complete.
One more thing to consider – you have to make your guide stand out and be unique. This is why I don’t recommend just having a small cookie-cutter guide with no content that is unique from any other guide for the game the guide is for. Otherwise, not only will the guide not distinguish itself to it’s readers but you’ll have a hard time ranking high in google with a generic walkthrough. This is why it pays to have a little bit of commentary about unique strategies, character analysis, etc.

ParticipantThanks for the tips!
Just to clarify, are you a gamefaqs employee? I wasn’t sure what you meant when you referenced, "what we really do is internet marketing through search engines".
Perhaps you’re using your guides to filter people through your website. If that’s the case, we actually have a monetization incentive for guide publishers that you might be interested in hearing. We plan on giving the publishers ways to track activity on their guides: page views, recommendations, etc. Also, for exceptional publishers we’re developing ways for them to offer digital content on our site.

ModeratorHmmm… do lists of SNES game officer stats count as micro-guides? if so, I have two you can use (one for RotK2, one for gemfire).

KeymasterHaha no, I work for myself. By ‘we’, I meant the other guy I work with in website design / content creation.
Sounds similar to what we do except you pay people for content and we just do our own content and reap the ads ourselves :) I’d consider lending my guides / content over to you guys but that would create a dup issue with google, knocking both of our rankings down. Not a good idea. That’s cool though, you get other people to provide the content for you.

ParticipantNo problem. Still a little confused by the similarities. Do you run another site beyond Lord Yuan Shu?
Do you have a site that’s similar to mygamemug.com?
