ModeratorErr no. It keeps it the way that I have it until I use DOAEditor. In other words, DOAEditor is reverting it back to Xiongn upon export but it stays Xiongnu if I edit it manually so I figured it was on YOUR end :P

ModeratorHmm. Maybe it's a philosophical difference between DOAEditor and the game itself (doesn't seem likely…).
The handling of the Pirate stuff is not actually as specific as I remembered, so there must be something odd about the entry itself.
How are you changing the length without bumping into the next entry (looks like normally, it's Lu Bu)?

ModeratorThere is a single FF Value after "Pirate" in the hex. I believe it used to be "Pirates" but is not anymore. Maybe it just doesnt like me and want's to mess up things now that I featured the Xiongnu in the DOAE Flames of Wu Video :S

ModeratorChange it to Wuhuan, Nanman, or Qiang, problem solved? XD
January 23, 2013 at 12:05 am #27446sonic.penguin
ModeratorTo my knowledge, the Nanman weren't around Yuan Shao land… unless they emigrated :puke:

ModeratorIt's true the text looks like
Pirate[END][END] (at least with the DOAE table James and I came up with way back when). But the first FF denotes the end of the Pirate officer, and the second is the FF for Lu Bu's strength value (255). I'm pretty sure neither one is optional.

ModeratorWell, it's true that the Nanman is nowhere near Yuan Shao…. but either you never said the Xiongnu battle was, or I missed it.
The Wuhuan, however, ARE near Yuan Shao; in fact, when Cao Cao's war with the Yuans finally came to an end, it was because Gongsun Kang executed Yuan Shang, Yuan Xi, and Wuhuan leader Supuyan.

ModeratorWuhuan or Wuwan? I suppose I could make a change.

ModeratorHi Niahak,
Got a new project for you which I don't think will be that bad. I have completed the 1MB ROM expansion with 2 new text banks! That said, we need DoaEditor to support it to be able to easily use the new text banks and not chop the ROM.
Here's what you need to know:
-
– It's going to use mapper 245 instead of mapper 1 (MMC1).
– I would suggest ditching the 500k expansion option in DoaEditor as that was an invalid format (it was MMC1 with another 256k added on that only FCEUX could read). But the portrait/sprite code is still valid except 1 minor change.
– Replace it with the 1MB expansion which is a valid mapper (245) that works on a few emulators (including FCEUX of course).
– There are 2 new text banks, text banks 0A and 0B. These will live where the old system page used to be on page 0F (0x3C010-0x4000F).
– That said, if the ROM is not expanded to 1MB we should not attempt to use those 2 new banks or we will bork the ROM.
– Assigning portraits and sprites will remain the same. I just changed 1 minor piece of the sprite code to use page 2E instead of 1E where lud and I had put code.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
All the hex changes are in the first post of this thread:

ModeratorHey guys,
I've got a quick beta for you all to test expansion on.
http://www.niahak.org/images/DOAE/DoaEdv098i.zip
I tried it out on Rise of Ieyasu, and as long as you
1) Open the ROM
2) Expand the ROM via the menu
3) Export the ROM
before re-opening in DoaEditor, it will expand your rom from "normal" to "uber" expansion fine, as far as I can tell.
DoaEditor does not support editing the new text blocks or anything so far, though.
January 26, 2013 at 1:00 am #27452sonic.penguin
ModeratorOkay, will try it! It expands the 512 rom to 1mb? I'm guessing for setting up portraits banks and sprite banks I should click "yes"
January 26, 2013 at 1:01 am #27453sonic.penguin
ModeratorHmm, so now that my portrait banks are totally nuked, where do I put the new portrait banks? DOAEditor is not reading the portrait banks once I expand the ROM it reverted everything to bank #1
January 26, 2013 at 4:00 am #27454Niahak
ModeratorThat's odd… it worked fine for Rise of Ieyasu.
Did you close and reopen DoaEditor after saving off the more-expanded ROM?

ModeratorQuote:where do I put the new portrait banks? The portrait code didn't change. It should be the same location(s).

ModeratorYes, will try it again
