Well somebody here’s going to be losing their family jewels one way or another so you better figure it out soon before it’s too late!
Turns out that the problem was that i went to the cave and got the map before being told to do so. Apparently this screws everything up and the Zheng letter trick will not work.
I hope to keep all extremeties in tact despite this mindless blunder.

Actually, getting the map is the first thing I do, and the trick still works.

They see me throwin' fireballs out of my sword, they runnin'.Indeed you are right, maybe the problem was that I was dropping a potion instead of bandana. I did not realize at the time that you can have 9 potions only take up one space in you inventory. This is different than what I was used to from DOAE1, definitely a welcome change.
Speaking of things being different, how do you place officers in the reserves. Up until now I have not been concerned with this, but now I am ready to dump some outdated generals and try out the Zheng letter trick.

Same here, I always grab the map first and the treasures. I don’t see why anyone would choose to wait before grabbing the map. It’s so close and the cave is so short.
I believe to remove officers from your lineup, you need to go in the building with the white flag over it and talk to the man inside.
You don’t get to dump anyone until later in the game. The Billeting doesn’t appear in the early castles.
There should be like a walk through walls cheat, just so that you can go to towns with billeting early on to mess with your party.
You have to remember, though; the very thing that makes you a nerd is that your enthusiasms are totally unrelatable and non-marketable to most of the world. For example, anime and celibacy. - Seanbaby
