Furthermore, when Han Sui, Liu Yan, and Ma Teng formed an alliance to defeat Li Jue & GUo Ji, they defeated the alliance. As for Yuan Shao's sons, even with them fighting each other it took five years; while Guandu cost Yuan Shao many troops and several skilled officers, much like Chi Bi it in no way left his force hopeless. In the Battle of Liyang (Cao Cao vs Yuan Tan & Yuan Shang), for example, Cao Cao was forced to retreat, and only escaped safely because the Yuan brothers began to distrust each other.
So no, neither one was just a formality!
ROTK nerd ehehe, just kidding. I found it odd also that Dian Wei was found in Wei, but eliminating him kind of reduces the brawn no brains officers to just Xu Chu

ModeratorGiven that the player has An Sha by then, is it so bad having so few low-int officers? XD
And you can always replace Dian Wei with his son, Dian Man.

ModeratorWould be like replacing Guo Jia with his son…

ModeratorNot really; although Dian Wei was amazing at personal combat, he wasn't THAT good at leading an army. He was probably better at leading an army than Lu Bu, though!

It was an ambush for goodness sake, not like a straight up war. Plus, wasn't that the Zhang Xiu era? With him the ruler?
Quote:In the Battle of Liyang (Cao Cao vs Yuan Tan & Yuan Shang), for example, Cao Cao was forced to retreat, and only escaped safely because the Yuan brothers began to distrust each other.Eh, sounds like a story plot to me lol, to gain credibility for those knuckle heads. The morale and talent in the Yuan army had significantly dwindled at that point and there was just no believable way that they could have pushed through Cao Cao's forces for an extended period of time.

ModeratorZhang Xiu and Jia Xu both served under Li Jue & Guo Si, though; although Jia Xu sensed defeat and resigned, Li Jue and Guo Si ordered him to return (possibly their best decision ever XD)
And the battle of Liyang definitely existed; also keep in mind that they still plenty of good-but-not-excellent officers, all the land north of the yellow river, and alliances with the Wuhuan. Furthermore, Yuan tan and Yuan Shang weren't incompetents; their biggest shortcoming was that they both viewed themselves as Yuan Shao's rightful heir (and, therefore, viewed the other as an usurper!). If Yuan Shao unequivocably declared one of them his heir…

ModeratorAfter looking at this some more this is looking way harder than I was thinking earlier because the rebel force code and definitions are on the ROM page that is locked in memory (the main program code one). So it has the ability to switch ROM pages above it while keeping to the "rebel force" code under it. This makes it a major major pain to figure out a way to code this (ie…altering dozens of assembly lines, rearranging things, etc…) because there is no room on the program code page that is locked in memory and it would require all kinds of page switching. I'd rather go for other enhancements that are easier to do than spending tons of time on this one.

KeymasterThe benefits are marginal anyway outside of splitting the two Wei's, even then, we'll live with them as it is…

ModeratorYa you gotta weigh benefit vs cost (in time and brain power). I can think of several things that would have a greater benefit for game play. Like not just stopping people from leaving (Liu Bei, Guan Yu, Zhang Fei, Lu Bu, Xu Shu) but forcing other generals to leave. Ie…have the ability to have several "temporary" party members. Imagine how cool the Dong Zhuo area would be if you could lead a coalition of temporary party members (Cao Cao, Yuan Shu, Sun Jian, etc…).

KeymasterInteresting thought. That would open things up a lot in terms of gameplay. It's tough having the two characters in the Zhang Fei / Guan Yu spot leave because they are usually two of the prime members of their respective forces (though I guess you can say the same about Zhang Fei and Guan Yu).

ModeratorWell guys, while I was sitting there thinking I came up with a new, smaller, simpler idea and it works!
Basically I'm having 8 new chapters *share* rebel forces, etc… from previous chapters. The mapping is:
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
9 A B C D E F 0
Which means that chapter 9 will share chapter 1's rebel forces, chapter A will share chapter 2's rebel forces, etc… So you could split each chapter in 2 if you wanted to. So in chapter 9 you would see chapter 9's generals and chapter 1's rebel forces. In chapter 0 you would see chapter 0's generals and chapter 8's rebel forces. Here's the hex changes to make this happen:
0x3B311: 20E0BF
0x3B3CB: AD3660
0x3B3DD: AD3660
0x3BFF3: AD2660C9099002E908C901B002A9088D366060
0x3DFD3: AD3660
0x3E01D: AE3660
0x3E043: AE3660
0x3E092: AD36600A6D3660
Then put your new chapters on the map using the "Changing the Chapter for the Region" instructions and to put your general(s) in the new chapter you would change his "Region" value to the new chapter.
* Note that chapters 1-5 and 9-D will have bandit forces, brigand, pirate, etc…
Adding this to the ROM hacking guide.

ModeratorExcept the rebels and such will be really weak in chapters 9+…
October 30, 2011 at 4:46 pm #40654MiDKnighT
ModeratorQuote:Except the rebels and such will be really weak in chapters 9+…You wouldn't use chapter 9 at end game. You'd use it at the beginning of the game. The logical chapter order would be:
1 9 – 2 A – 3 B – 4 C – 5 D – 6 E – 7 F – 8 0
Where "-" represents a switch to a stronger rebel force. So if you were to split the Yellow Scarves area you would use chapters 1 and 9. If you were to split Wei you would use chapters 8 and 0.

ModeratorWouldn't it just be easier to combine them 01 23 45 67 89 AB CD EF by halving?
