While waiting on net to come back and stuff….
Had an itch continue to grow and decided to scratch it.
Playing through DW2/NES. Yeah, I've beaten it around twice before.
Levels are currently around 23/20/19 or so.
Went ahead and did the SoT loop for easy cash. Also used same exploit for the double water flying cloth.
So far, the game has been fairly gentle. Only one crit by a sea slug… not too many fire dragon flies, etc. Have had plenty of strange jig's and sweet breath come my way through. Granted, all of the truly troll-y parts of the game are yet to come.
Have the Sea Cave, Cave to Rhone, Rubis's Charm, and Hargon's Castle left to do. Spent some time grinding in the moon fragment tower. Gonna poke at the Sea Cave soon and see if it'll let me pass or not.
It's weird hating yet liking the game.

This is about where I left off 6 months ago after I popped the game back in. Dragon Warrior II has one of the best open-exploration situations after you get that boat .
The SoT trick is nice since otherwise it takes eons to get enough Gold to buy things (though you have to do all that grinding anyway for experience/levels). I always end up spending a few hours at Hamlin once you get there, and then fight those damn Baboons over and over until I can buy the Broad Sword, defensive equipment, etc.
Quote:It's weird hating yet liking the game.Yea Dragon Warrior II is back when the Dragon Warrior series really kicks your ass, but at the same time it has some of the cool features that later DW's have (multiple party members, world exploration, etc). It starts to get easier right after with Dragon Warrior III and IV.
I'm actually playing through Dragon Warrior IV a bit. That game is up there with DoaE for me as far as NES RPG's (or favorite games in general actually). The one take-away I'm having playing through Dragon Warrior IV again is that it's so much better + harder than the version on the DS (Dragon Quest IV). That said, I'd still take a remake of Dragon Warrior II or III.

Huo Hu's Adventure started Destiny of an Emperor hackingJuly 6, 2013 at 3:11 pm #45589MiDKnighTModeratorMy favorite NES games in order:
1. Destiny of course
2. Final Fantasy I
3. Romance of the Three Kingdoms I
4. Probably Dragon Warrior IV but it's been ages since I played it
5. Wizardry – Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord
July 6, 2013 at 3:58 pm #45590Lord Yuan ShuKeymasterWow, FF1 eh. I can only tolerate that game on emulator with speed-up. Battle is just so horrendously slow especially with the ineffective hits if the character you targeted dies.
1. Destiny of an Emperor.
2. Dragon Warrior IV
3. Tecmo Super Bowl
4. Dragon Warrior III
5. Destiny of an Emperor II

1. Destiny of an Emperor
2. Destiny of an Emperor II
3. Final Fantasy I
4. Tecmo Super Bowl
5. Romance of the Three Kingdoms I

As far as game speed, the worst was Karateka on Commodore 64. That game was sloooooowwwww.
July 6, 2013 at 6:49 pm #45593Lord Yuan ShuKeymasterWhat were you even doing with a Commodore 64?
Quote:I only play DoaE on speedup now too.Yea same here, and DoaE was one of the faster moving games (fast-moving sprites, all-out, etc).
Quote:I forgot about Tecmo Super BowlI just discovered all the Tecmo hacks a few years back…haven't really got into them as much as the stock version but that game has a huge following online.

…stranger things have happened…
July 6, 2013 at 7:51 pm #45595Lord Yuan ShuKeymasterKnow what would be a huge hit, a Dragon Warrior mod with the DoaE system.
Hell, you could make all the enemy generals as monsters and then they could become recruitable, just like recruiting monsters in Dragon Quest V.

You could do all kinds of things… A dragon warrior mod, a final fantasy themed mod, a Lord of the Rings mod, a Shogun mod (my personal fav but wouldn't be popular)… I believe ludmeister had already floated the Dragon Quest idea. Perhaps you and ludmeister could team up on a cool mod like that. Of course I could provide any back end support needed but lud's already an assembly wiz so I doubt I would be needed much. I'll tell him about your idea at dinner tonight :)
July 7, 2013 at 7:52 am #45597unfyModeratorWent ahead and prodded the Sea Shrine. I forgot how much that place just outright hates the player.
Early shrine: sweet breath & strange jig (bai bai mp), late shrine: pink panthers (ow) and strange jig (no more mp for sure!).
I can't imagine going through that area as a kid without 3 SoS's for the free healing…
Also poked the Cave to Rhone a bit… got the thunder sword, armor, life crest (and charm of rubis as a result)…. now just need to go through the cave and make it into Rhone.
Levels… aren't much more than previous mention. I've gained a level or so…. PoC has Defeat, and PsM has Explodet (both are new since last post).
As far as DW2 … there's a post on the gamefaq's forum for dw2 that is appropriate…
Quote:One of the things that I most like about this game is that its characters aren't superheroes. The prince of Cannock doesn't join because he's a good character-he joins because his country will be next if Hargon survives. That's the game. I'm sure that somewhere in the world of Dw2, there is a magic-wielding uberknight who (somehow) has a natural immunity to random defeat spells. He didn't opt to go along with you. A man in an iron kettle who can't comprehend magic, a snotty-nosed prince who is absolute lord and master over *2* other weapons, and a girl who's spent the last few weeks sniffing other dog's cornholes in happy greeting…that's who's going to save the world. Good luck.….
Let's not forget, these monsters are trying to *kill you.* Death is never game over when a power button is involved. If the bad guys never succeed in winning then, they weren't doing their jobs and neither were the programmers.
As far as the SoT trick – the key to doing it is that ya gotta realize that it helps a bit, but isn't a god-tier trick. You do it, you can afford some things, but your stats don't get a huge boost from the new items really. It just makes the up and coming grinding a little easier. Which… if you think about it… I can't really recall any DW games that dangled god-like weaponry in your face "before you can normally get them" … which is a good thing IMHO.
DW3 is…. about right for difficulty I think. Possibly. It's easy enough to get into and enjoy, but hard enough to not be a *complete* cakewalk. I wish it would be harder at times, but it really does seem about right. From there, the series generally seems to be getting easier and easier. I've not played 7 or 9 yet though.
Re: FF1.
FF1/NES is actually my prefered format for FF1 :). I hate the remakes. MP ? Ethers ? free money/xp ? blah… the suckage. And I like "ineffective" personally. You basically beat the shit out of a dead body. If a 'round' is only a few seconds, this would be to be expected.
Fave NES games is a bit hard to do. Too many genres and such.
Blaster Master, Bionic Commando, FF1, DW3, RoTK1/2, Metroid, DoaE, Zelda2, the list can get quite large pretty quick :). Hell, maybe even the original Uncharted Waters.
Annnndddd for what it's worth, when playing on emulators, I don't ever use fast forward features. Personal preference I suppose heh.
July 7, 2013 at 10:26 am #45598DragonAtmaModeratorNOBODY likes the remakes of FF1; they took away all the challenge. :(
Only exception is FF Origins, as you can disable all the fake easiness.
July 7, 2013 at 4:49 pm #45599Lord Yuan ShuKeymasterQuote:NOBODY likes the remakes of FF1; they took away all the challenge.Ya, let's face it, they made that for the younger generation. Not for the old fans of the NES version.
Quote:Annnndddd for what it's worth, when playing on emulators, I don't ever use fast forward features. Personal preference I suppose heh.Just as good, it's kind of a curse along with addiction to save states. Can't enjoy the music, for one.
That Gamefaqs post does summarize DW2 well. All the characters are quite flawed, though together they make a decent team. The Prince of Midenhall has to be one of the worst hero's in DW history, in terms of ability. All the dude can do is attack, he's probably the only non-magic using hero I can think of in the series. PoC is mediocre offensively despite being able to equip some decent things and while the Princess has good spells, she's so vulnerable to getting whacked physically.
Quote:Fave NES games is a bit hard to do. Too many genres and such.Yes, it's an impossible task. I forgot about the Zelda's. I love them dearly, particularly Zelda 1 but it is probably in my 6-10 favorite range along with some other games I forgot like Mega Man 2.
Just finished Esturk in Dragon Warrior IV. Levels are around 30. I might pop in Dragon Warrior II soon just to see where I am. Probably high teens in levels.

Offensively useful he is not… at least not up until the last 10 levels or so. Defeat has some use, granted.
I've not gotten myself up to the point of running through cave to rhone. The last 5% of dw2 is sssssuuuuucccccchhhhhh a bitch :finger:
July 11, 2013 at 2:35 pm #45601Lord Yuan ShuKeymasterAh, so of course they make the GBC version easier.
Defeat is good but when he's your main / only healer, MP is precious.
running through cave to rhone
That the cave with the clown / house of healing looking sorcerer guy is at the end? I just remember how DW2 has huge towers/caves with long paths and virtually no reward treasures scattered about.
