Maso DW1 looks rough.
Although once ya learn Hurtmore it probably becomes much more feasible.
DW3 hero solo can be a bit rough, DW3 fighter solo is cruel. There's a youtube (or was, dunno anymore) of a guy taking PoM solo through DW2 (just kill off the other two). I believe that comes down to just luck.
SMT:Nocturne hard solo is pretty brutal but very doable.
I've seen folks fiddle with shining force (and others in the genre) solo's, as well as phantasy star solos.
Then there's James' DOAE challenges that I'm sure most everyone here is familiar with. Those are reset heaven or save state abuse hell etc. Although it seems like the no-extra-fighting challenge might be plausible by a sane person.

Making mods just training in save-state hacking wasn't really what I felt I wanted, so I've eased up a lot on my modding with lots more testing.

While harder mods were awesome in the early days – the fact that most amped the difficulty to the point of save state abuse or constant resets was irksome IMHO. Like early Doom maps that required cheat codes to complete.
The other modders that work on adding features without making the game impossible are awesome well done :).
All of this said, James' contributions laid a lot of foundation for getting things started. :huohu:
August 11, 2013 at 4:33 am #45669DragonAtmaModeratorHurt was definitely useful, Hurtmore willl also be useful.
But it'll still require grinding for MP, as if Maso runs out of MP before finishing [insert dungeon here]….
August 11, 2013 at 9:40 pm #45670unfyModeratorI didn't check full challenge rules, if you're allowed to run then surely you have a bit of wiggle room. No pun intended.
Haven't touched DW2 in a bit… just not in the mood to grind out that last 250-300k exp heh.
August 12, 2013 at 3:55 am #45671DragonAtmaModeratorThe general rules of the challenge:
* No buying equipment
* No using the ring/scale
And, of course, there are also the standard Maso rules (no savestates, no cheating*, etc.).
* Exceptions are made in rare cases; FFL3, for example, revives everyone after every battle, so codes are used to perma-petrify everyone but Maso.
August 12, 2013 at 10:40 pm #45672unfyModeratorNo Buying Equipment, No ring, No scale. So….. Erdrick's Sword ? Armor ? I'll assume not allowed ? Since they're along the same vain as the ring.
August 13, 2013 at 6:12 am #45673DragonAtmaModeratorNo using Erdrick's stuff, obviously! XD
Maso will be as unequipped as the day she woke up in King Lorik's throne room with total amnesia!
September 7, 2013 at 4:45 am #45676WillBloodworthParticipantWhile we're on the subject of DW2… here's something I finished up Monday. Coincidentally, I found this place because my next planned run is going to be a DoaE run :D
Solo Prince of Midenhall Run Finale:

September 7, 2013 at 1:02 pm #45679sonic.penguinModeratorBANHAMMER! They should be showing up now. Fixed
.
Dragon Warrior 2, although I've never played it, seems a lot like Earthbound, especially the battle system.
September 7, 2013 at 7:49 pm #45680unfyModeratorwillbloodworth: followed :P
Also, I dunno if it's indeed the 'first ever' recording of it.
Youtube has something, but it might be TAS-ish.
And no, DW2 is nothing like earthbound. At all.
I still haven't gone about doing trials of how many attempts succeed / fail at hargon castle runs with a maxed out party. let alone how many succeed / fail with the sub bosses alive or dead.
September 7, 2013 at 7:54 pm #45681WillBloodworthParticipantAll I know is that it's the first recording of the 5-boss gauntlet, and the first one on a non-Japanese cart.
I'm trying to figure out which DoaE challenge to do, as there are several and they all look torturous/fun :) Any recommendations?
September 7, 2013 at 11:16 pm #45682unfyModeratorfirst on non jp cart, prolly :).
see also (from 2006):
Field recruit-able generals only shouldn't be too bad and might be fun. Two notable exceptions to this would be xu zhe and zhu ge liang. due to plot requirements. make sure party is full for zhuge and you can skip him. XZ – just don't use him ? I assume pang tong is allowed since he's kind of field recruited ? same with lu bu ? but no wei yan, ma chao, etc.
I *think* the required-fights-only is plausible. Not entirely sure.
There's a Song-brothers-always-in-active-party challenge too ? effectively cuts your party to only 3 members instead of 5.
Or better yet – grab an emulator and go try out one of the mods.
Yuan Shao, Rise of Lu Bu, Flames of Wu are all very excellent.
If you want insane difficult, Cao Cao edition mod.
For something completely different, an emulator and the translated DoaE2 rom.
