gamefaqs’ FF1 NES board has a thread — see http://boards.gamefaqs.com/gfaqs/genmessage.php?board=522595&topic=33693741 — with 2235625782758 formulas fixes.
Unfortunately, every FF1 port makes it easier. Right now, it’s as if DoaE gave a solid +5 (or more!) levels to every part of the game….

Huo Hu's Adventure started Destiny of an Emperor hackingJune 1, 2007 at 7:12 pm #23555Lord Yuan ShuKeymasterI’m playing this now. It’s likely I’ll go through the rest of the FF’s until Odin Sphere or some other new game comes my way.
Anyway, I don’t know if I could bear this game if I didn’t have the emulator speedup function. Battle is just plodding otherwise.
They remade this for PSP right? Well they remake every game so that’s kind of a pointless question…

Huo Hu's Adventure started Destiny of an Emperor hackingJune 1, 2007 at 7:56 pm #23556NiahakModeratorBattle? How about item buying? (unless you have the PSX or GBA remake…)
Actually you can change the speed of battle on the title screen on the NES version. If you set the battle speed to the highest setting it goes faster than most new RPGs :)
Yeah, they remade it and FF2j for PSP. It looks really good but I wonder if they added anything worthwhile.
Oh, and what happened to Dragon Quest VIII? :P
June 1, 2007 at 8:11 pm #23557Lord Yuan ShuKeymasterOh god, the item buying. I bought an HERB and PURE and couldn’t believe I had to do it one by one. It’s amazing how far RPG’s have come – It couldn’t have been that hard for them to allow you to choose how many you want to buy.
Well yeah I put it on the faster response rate and it’s pretty ridiculous, I can barely see it unless I’m really paying attention. I just mean selecting each monster to attack – and if that monster dies beforehand you fight nothing instead of the next enemy.
Whoops, yeah, I should get DQ8 up soon, before it becomes too ancient.

Huo Hu's Adventure started Destiny of an Emperor hackingJune 2, 2007 at 1:36 am #23558Perhong_AngtongParticipantPersonally, I prefer the remixes, but the original was still good, even though it can be long. (I have FFDoS on GBA, that is FF1+2)

http://openmedia.ca/lockdownYeah... Pretty much...
October 7, 2007 at 6:31 pm #23559CommieCatGirlParticipantYeah, I like the remixed FF1. This may be a bit soft core of me, but I prefer to play FF1 in Origins on Easy Mode.
You have to remember, though; the very thing that makes you a nerd is that your enthusiasms are totally unrelatable and non-marketable to most of the world. For example, anime and celibacy. - Seanbaby
November 11, 2007 at 3:16 am #23560DanagParticipantI own the cart of the original, and I find it a chore, just to put the game in and start it up. I can play FF1 in small spurts, but not by much. I’d rather play the remade version on FFOrigins.
January 7, 2008 at 9:03 am #23561UltraCraig64ParticipantI used to own the orginal cart, now I play it all on emulators (oh no, don’t say that out loud!). I busted tail powerleveling at the Eye boss in the Ice Cave to get level 50 (highest level in NES version) characters. I enjoyed using the "serious OG" party of a Warrior, Black Belt, Red Mage, and White Mage. They were extremely balanced, and at level 50 my black belt/master was able to one-hit-KO Chaos, the final boss. The trick is to not equip your black belt with weapons and possibly armor for most of the game, since his attack power with no weapon is always twice the number of his level, and his defense rating with no armor is always the same number as his level. This gave my level 50 unarmed Master 100 attack power (with many more hits than the Knight/Fighter) and 50 defense which is decent. Trouble is you need to get him to about level 25-30 probably to really make him a brick shithouse. The GBA one was fun too, and I also beat it (much easier and characters max at level 99).
P.S. For all you tortured souls who want the option to buy up to 99 items with a single transaction, try using this handy little utility program from the makers of Notso Fatso (possibly the best NSF player out there):

June 20, 2008 at 9:51 pm #23562Nemix FelmParticipantBuying one potion at a time=definitely one of the weakest elements about it.
Still… if it weren’t for this one the others wouldn’t be here.
June 20, 2008 at 10:41 pm #23563Lord Yuan ShuKeymasterYea you have to be able to appreciate where Final Fantasy came from. Newer FF gamers probably could not tolerate a minute of FF 1. And yes, slowly buying a potion at a time is a treat! I can’t imagine it would have been that hard to implement even back then

Huo Hu's Adventure started Destiny of an Emperor hackingJune 21, 2008 at 3:42 am #23564Xian Zhu XuandeParticipantHaha! What a chore that was.
I always tried to enlist my brother somehow to do it for me. Some kind of bribe, some kind of exchange, some kind of threat. Anything. Plug away at those potions until they reach 99. You cringed when you used too many not because you were worried about the cost, but rather because you feared returning to the shop to restock.
I grinned when I saw they ‘fixed’ this in the GBA release.
June 23, 2008 at 5:31 pm #23565Nemix FelmParticipantlol I used to just plug in an NES-Max and hold the turbo down. If you go to the first item shop of the game the Heals are right at the top. Goes a bit quicker, but you wind up with a nice crater in your thumb when you’re finished. Nonetheless this game is a milestone to the RPG world.
June 26, 2008 at 4:59 am #23566Lord Yuan ShuKeymasterYea releasing an RPG with the difficulty of the original FF1 is not going to appeal to the mainstream RPG gamers, who have been playing creampuff difficulty RPG’s

Huo Hu's Adventure started Destiny of an Emperor hackingJune 28, 2008 at 5:34 pm #23567Nemix FelmParticipantWhat did you guys think of its release on PSP?…
June 28, 2008 at 5:40 pm #23568Lord Yuan ShuKeymasterPlayed some of it on my brother in law’s PSP….graphically it was definitely pleasing. Music was nice too. Difficulty wise it seemed closer to a lot of the FF1 ports over the years as opposed to the ridiculously hard FF1 for NES.
I didn’t get that far though, I think to the vampire cave or whatever. How about you?
