Telling him he didn't found the Five Pecks of Rice School, no matter how true, may get you killed…or worse, forced to watch a duel between Yang Song and Liu Shan. You could use Guan Yu & Zhang Fei until they leave the party. I did. Then Zhang Fei got KILLED by Lu Bu.

To prevent the game from breaking then you could either use the ROM hacking guide to keep the Zhang Fei leave event from happening or we could hack Zhang Fei back to life :)
It wasn't supposed to happen, and I think it was Lu Bu who forced the duel. Zhang Fei could have rejected, but he was an idiot. My 7th slot is now completely broken to where I have to roll around with just 6 generals. However, I'm going to push on. If the game breaks, there will be superfast montage of me using cheat hax (excessive use of game genie codes) to get back to where I was. It will make for better video to see me fucksnap :P
If the game won't play fair and let Zhang Fei stay alive, I won't play fair either! :D

In an effort to not get Guan Yu killed and fucksnap for a second time in the playthrough, he has been relegated to 6th general in favor of the much weaker, but surprisingly smart, Lei Bo. 175/150 isn't too bad. Also, I've over-grinded significantly. halolz :P
Zhang Lu
They see me throwin' fireballs out of my sword, they runnin'.I can confirm that after playing through Shu on a separate save from the video series, my issues stemming from the death of Zhang Fei in a duel are fixed when Guan Yu and Zhang Fei are sent to Changsha and Guiyang. Adding Pang De and Diao Chan to the party gave them their normal stats.
Needless to say, this makes me happy as I will be able to roll with the full 7 generals through Wu and Wei. :D
EDIT: I will let you guys in on a secret. My list of officers that I am not allowed to use due to their affiliation with Liu Bei. I'm allowed to recruit them if I wish, but they are not allowed to be used in the field.
Yellow Scarves: Liao Hua, Mi Zhu, Chen Deng, Guan Yu, Zhang Fei (both are mandatory in-party until Shu
Dong Zhuo: Liu Feng, Guan Ping
Yuan Shu: Guan Suo, Zhou Cang
Yuan Shao: Zhao Yun
Jingzhou: Huang Zhong, Wei Yan, Ma Liang, Ma Su, Zhuge Liang (must remove from party before Wu chapter)
Shu: Fa Zheng, Yan Yan, Meng Da, Ma Chao, Ma Dai, Lei Tong, Wu Yi, Huang Quan, Li Yan, Guan Xing, Zhang Bao, Meng Huo, Zhu Rong, Liu Xun, Wu Lan, Liu Ba
Wu: None
Wei: Jiang Wei
As far as restrictions go, Shu is the harshest. I'm only allowed to recruit Zhang Lu, Zhang Ren, Gao Pei, and Yang Huai.
My general rule of thumb for mandatory in-party generals: You can use them until the time they have to leave your party. If they can be put in billeting, you must put them in at the first opportunity. As I believe I need Zhuge Liang to get into Shu, I will throw myself a bone and allow usage of him until the end of Shu.

If it makes you feel better, Wang Can didn't, but he isn't there until a later area. Then again, Wang Can died in 217…
RANDOM TRIVIA: It's believed that Wang Can had photographic memory:

Also, Zhang Fei (since he's dead), doesn't appear next to his son Zhang Bao. Luckily you do not have to talk him to continue.
