Stallion Fury
ParticipantI'm not an expert at this stuff, so this might be a useless suggestion lol, but is it possible to import soundtracks from other games?
April 28, 2012 at 5:42 pm #41919sonic.penguin
ModeratorHehe, now there would be a real challenge as NES plays 8 bit tracks which would require a chip-tunes kind of program. While I'm sure it is doable, recording would be the easy part, the actual importing into the rom would be rather tough both hex-wise AND size as expanding Destiny of an Emperor from 256 -> 512 KB I think is the size limit.
Also, I did tweak the sound a bit and uploaded a new version. It changes castle/fort/and 2nd world map music.

ModeratorI finally started playing this. The battles and creativity (rifles and such) is very good. Adds a lot of twists to the battles and gives it a unique feel. Love the map updates that I see so far. I had to do a lot of grinding at first to do the first castle/fort fights. I just beat Nobonuga although I think I'll be seeing him again. Great battle vs Nobonuga. Only one potential issue I see so far…that you can sell the steed for a ridiculous sum of money. I didn't sell my steed but am wondering if it would mess up the flow of the game if someone did.
So far I think this is mod deviates from the original game the most of any mod so far which is a great thing. Gonna take a break tonight but I'll let you know how the rest of my quest goes.

Yeah its a lot, but nowhere near the amount to buy one… that is one thing I would like to find out how to adjust is 1. Selling % and 2. $ to recruit officers. Anyways, the price is so high to keep players from stocking up at the beginning of the game and also to make that dreaded "give me a steed and I will serve" message actually make you stop and think, heh heh. that is because they give you a bonus attack if you talked to the beginning villagers. If you want quick cash at the beginning you can easily throw away your bonus attack, but it's not really worth it b/c I've upped the gold awarded. Glad you're liking it so far.

ModeratorPlayed a little more last night. The final chapter 1 battle and the first one of chapter 2 vs "Ninja" were rough. I beat the chapter 1 fight the first time but the "Ninja" one took a few tries as they were so fast and pummeled me before I could do much. I also noticed that the option to KILL a captured officer is there. So far I keep missing :D If you wanted to I'm sure you could alter the event to remove them from random encounters if you kill them
Weird playing DOAE without the ROTK characters. I don't really know these characters. The only ones I had heard of before this are Ieyasu and Nobunaga.
May 4, 2012 at 3:01 pm #41923sonic.penguin
Moderatorheh heh, that was my intent but never got around to asking about coding that sort of thing. Essentially it would have to have some kind of check whether or not they had been run through that event. Granted, a third option would be cool, but things might get kind of hairy with that O_o
It takes some getting used to, but actually I tried EXTREMELY hard to keep things as close to history as possible, even the locations of towns/order of battles, which was tough, especially around chapter 3.

ModeratorI think I finished chapter 2. Just beat the monks. After I tried it once I realized I needed to level up to get "rifles" before attempting again. Once I got rifles it was tough but got it. I really like your approach to battles vs when you first started with Rise of Lu Bu. Each battle you have to think about a different strategy. I also like the fact that you mostly took out the one-hit kills (at least so far). Yes people can one hit kill you if they get a good multi-hit attack but that's more bad luck than automatic as it should be. The map edits are great too. At times I am lost and then I start to see some familiar territory.
It's amazing how these mods have evolved and I think and hope that the ROM hacking guide has helped with that. I know all the DoaEditor enhancements have really helped too. I can't imaging trying to do all the map edits and warps by hand. I can still tell you spent a crazy amount of time on this mod.
What was the most time consuming part of making this mod? The reason I ask is that perhaps the next DoaEditor enhancement should be something that takes away the time and tediousness of making a mod as detailed as this. Could you break out the time you spent? Like…
30% Text updates
20% Map and warp edits
5% Tactic changes
15% General setup
20% Portraits
5% Battle setup
???
etc…
How would you break out the time you spent?

Addresses have helped the most, but after hacking these for so long, I can recognize a lot of things by patterns in the hex. DOAEditor really does make it much simpler and I think it is the only tool at this time just reduces the load on having to edit each single thing manually like stats/text.
Also
This does not include the 4 Months of prior experience learning how to hack on the Rise of Lu Bu Mod…
Rise of Ieyasu Mod:
Portraits= 250+ hrs
Graphics of sprites/towns (color selection/sprite to match)=20+hrs
Modifying text/grammatical Errors= 500+hrs
Story alignment w/ history/generals research= 20+hrs
Editing Maps/Warps=50+hrs
Modifying opening biographies/credits=20+hrs
Modifying tactics/tactic names/weapons/Weapon names= 30+hrs
Having to restart work b/c the mod got corrupted due to coding errors and not making frequent enough backups= +100hrs (boo!)
Modifying officer stats/battle balance/officer flow & progression by playtesting battles multiple times/bug testing= 1000+hrs
Creating a game you feel is pretty cool= priceless
This timeframe pretty much fits in with the 4 1/2 months it took to make the mod.
SO I guess altogether, those are my estimates based on how long it took to create the mod. Really, the longest parts were not the actual coding thanks to the nice Destiny of an Emperor IPS patch, but more or less creating the new portraits, story, and testing it for balance/bugs. The worst part was my coding error I had for the longest time which had to do with a typo the officer removal. Altogether though, it was worth it I hope.

KeymasterSo you spent 1990 hours according to your estimates lol?! That's ~83 days, no way. Unless you've been hanging around Hu Huo at Hu Lao Gate a bit too much. Whatever the total, it's still a great mod though.
Play testing definitely takes the longest, even with speed-up.

ModeratorQuote:That's ~83 days, no wayDisturbingly, yes. I don't watch TV and I'm too cheap to go out much as I'm paying off college loans atm. Most days I'll spend 10-15 hrs. of the day modding DOAE. Hacking has sort of been my hobby the past year.
Granted, things have picked up w/ work as I've acquired a position, so my time has been drastically reduced over the past month, which is why I tried to wrap things up w/ Ieyasu and Rise of Lu Bu 2.0

ModeratorHoly cripe! I can safety say that I will never have that kind of time to put into a mod. Here is the breakdown based on your numbers:
1. Modifying officer stats/battle balance/officer flow & progression by playtesting battles multiple times/bug testing 50%
2. Modifying text/grammatical Errors 25%
3. Portraits 13%
4. Having to restart work b/c the mod got corrupted due to coding errors and not making frequent enough backups 5%
5. Editing Maps/Warps 3%
6. Modifying tactics/tactic names/weapons/Weapon names 2%
7. Graphics of sprites/towns (color selection/sprite to match) 1%
8. Story alignment w/ history/generals research 1%
9. Modifying opening biographies/credits 1%
#1 – Is not something DoaEditor can do. That just requires game testing.
#2 – Perhaps the text editor can be more robust somehow? Not sure…maybe Niahak would have ideas.
#3 – I'm sure a lot of that time was on unique portraits but I noticed when doing portraits for the Yuan Shao mod it was a pain to find and pick out all the slices. Would be cool if there was an option to pick a face with something like the "select from map/region selector" thing for the maps. Then instead of picking each slice, just pick a face.
I guess the rest of the stuff isn't much comparatively speaking. Will propose this to Niahak and see what he says :)

ParticipantThat's so much work you put into the mod and it's definitely worth the effort
DoaE gave birth to Huo Hu.

Moderatorhmm, actually, once I got the portraits all made it was rather a cinche to get them all into the game via the feidian method. It was just a matter of creating them all and coloring them appropriately (or lack thereof) in order to get the multi-colored portraits that I like to use. Yeah, I dont know how much more refining can be done to the process as the big time consumers were really the part that just took some brain racking, experimenting, and creativity.
The big help was actually the feedback from the beta-testers on the Rise of Lu Bu mod that helped me out so much on this mod. It really makes a big difference even when I was told sections/battles were total crap. Also playing other peoples mods and ripping off their ideas helped also FLEXX
Quote:That's so much work you put into the mod and it's definitely worth the effortGlad to hear, and I appreciate the feedback and testing. Let me know, still, what I can improve on as Im using this mod as a template for ideas on the possible Wu mod.

ModeratorQuote:Also playing other peoples mods and ripping off their ideas helped alsoYes that always helps. The Cao Cao mod inspired me to start modding to begin with. Ludmeister's remix was very inspiring seeing what he did with weapons, tactics, and such. Ieyasu is inspiring just for pretty much using everything in the ROM hacking guide to make a whole new game. The Yuan Shu mod is inspiring to see the wide variety of officers that can be recruited. And more.
These mods are really advancing beyond the first mods and continue to get better.
Oh back to the play through. After I gave Mitsu Hide that tea and won that battle I gained 3 levels! That's due to Mitsu Hide's crazy soldier count. Not sure if you wanted to give out all those levels. One way around that would be to give him like 2000 troops and 250 AC or something. Then he would still be unbeatable via a normal battle without giving 3 levels.
My current party is:
Tada Katsu
Mitsu Hide
Taka Tora
Hanzo
Ieyasu
* Tomo Nori
Mitsu Hide would be the best strategist but he's too good to keep him off the front lines right now. Hopefully I'll find another high INT guy to make my strategist.

This is intentional. It is meant to bring characters up to par w/ fighting the Takeda and also give someone w/ enough INT to fight as well. It is more or less a counter-measure to fighting them too early. I used this more than once in the game, you will see, but is due to the fact of the new map edits :)
