Actually, if you don’t mind having an unconventional (though well-done and reasonable) viewpoint, Legend of Cao Cao might be a good bet.

You’d just have to track down a copy… I don’t think the english translation patch works on a legit one, actually.

Briefly, it’s a strategy RPG somewhat similar to Fire Emblem. Quite difficult at times.

Yeah, they both leave out some key parts but DOAE2 probly gives the best general idea.
