ModeratorThey're not home-made so much as recolored (decolored?) koei portraits (which I'm more than willing to do as well!)
For example, consider Zhuge Liang from the top of this page to his younger http://kongming.net/11/portraits/z.php portrait.

ModeratorYeah, these new ones are based off ROTK 11 portraits which seem to appeal better than some earlier ones which I've tried to base portraits off of. Essentially I just put two portraits side by side and try to redraw the same thing w/ reduced pixels and colors. The ROTK ones are like 500x400ish pixels, which when reduced to 48×48… you can't even make them out! So, gotta do lots of Photoshop work and still some of them really turn out like garbage, but others seem to fare better. The tough part is choosing which of the 4 colors I want to go where to make it look most realistic, considering that I can use 8 different color swaps w/ the white and I have to guess which places to put the shadows (black or red) to make everyone not so pasty-white.

Quote:Wow, how many home made portraits do you have in this mod now?Well, not including the Rise of Ieyasu strips which were ripped from Nobunaga's Ambition Lord of Darkness and recolored by hand to make them look good, I am starting on my 3rd strip of completely pixel-by-pixel redrawn portraits for Flames of Wu. So what is that, like 30ish just for this mod?

ModeratorGah.
I was referring to how I already decolored/recolored a whole bunch of them (nearly all of the 64 gemfire dawn portraits were modded, some minor while others had full changes to clothing, hair color, and/or age), but seeing how poorly I phrased it it seems I'll be making a few more.
So name five RoTK XI portraits for me to recolor for you; I'll snag copies from kongming.net and work on them.

ModeratorRe-drew my previous Sima Yi to make it more crisp and reflective of my more modern work. It's amazing what a few months of portrait editing can do in terms of quality. I might have to redo Lu Bu as well… From looking like a dirty bum strategist… to slick James Bond style Sima Yi…

ModeratorIf I knew how much of a pain decoloring RoTK XI pics was, I'd offer you one pic, not five!

Apologies if this is not as good as the usual pics, but (2,304 -> 4 colors) isn't nearly as convenient as (16 -> 4 colors) or even (16 -> other 16 colors).
EDIT: Minor change to the pic.

ModeratorCool, looks pretty neat :) Is it Zhou Tai?

ModeratorGiven that the filename is zhoutai.png, I sure hope so!

ModeratorWhoops >_> Yeah, it isn't anywhere near as nice as SNES pics are in terms of GFX and 16 colors, it just takes time getting used to what looks best portrait wise, even with how you connect lines and outline stuff. Its cool though :)

ModeratorStill waiting on the other four :)
All the peach fuzz and scars make him a real toughie to draw, mine had trouble coming out decently

ModeratorBe patient, young grasshopper!
Given the complexity of decoloring them — and how much of a pain it is — it'll probably take a week to finish 'em all. To be fair, a week from now you'll likely have five more free pics than you expected, so I'm sure you won't mind waiting! ;)
