ParticipantBleah, I’m sorry. I’m going to re-read this tomorrow when I’m more coherent, I’ve been working on a project for AI class for nearly 10 hours straight. As far as I can tell, it can work well, but you’d have to figure out a) distribution of strategy and b) how to make it "random" yet fair. It shouldn’t be too complicated, yet it should be complex enough to keep interest.
Have you played other card-strategy based games before? There’s one coming out pretty soon stateside IIRC, called Yggdra Union. Looks like Warsong / Fire Emblem + Cards. Looks cool. But yeah, I’m rambling, so I’m going to head to sleep.

ParticipantIt seems that Lordyuanshu really likes ROTK3 (though my favorite SNES ROTK is 4), and it got me thinking: Wouldn’t it be boring to play the same thing just over and over without any change? I’ve been able to successfully hack ROTK4’s stats, and I think I should be able to do the same with ROTK3 as well. Would you guys be interested in a stats hack of the game? It’s nothing crazy though, just a normal hack with some fixes and changes.

KeymasterYeah, I would be very interested actually.
For some reason 3 never gets boring for me, and I find myself too impatient for the newer ones I guess.

ParticipantI’d be interested…if you could make it so that officers gain more loyalty at levelup instead of the lame 2 point increase.

ParticipantSorry, Zhang Lu, I don’t have that much skills. All I can do right now is change the stats of the officiers.
EDIT – NOOOO!!! I failed!!! I can’t figure out where the stats are being kept in ROTK3. I figured it would work the same way as 4, but turns out I was wrong! I was also able to hack 2, but for some reason, I just can’t hack 3. Would you be interested in spending some time with ROTK4 if I hack it?

How true. I played a lot of 1 and 2, but 3 was Three Kingdoms perfection for me. I played that game time and time again, alone or with my brother. We invited friends over to play it too. Something about it was lost in 4, and it just started to lose a little more magic each release (though I still like the series). I remember it most for the epic armies and battles, its city development (or rape), and the wonderful firestorms I so loved to create.

KeymasterDamn so three is the one you can’t hack…
Well 2 is the only other one I’m familiar with other than 3…I’d still probably check it out.

Participant4 would be cool if it was hacked, I liked that one alot, not so much for 3, not really sure why.

Moderator3 can indeed be hacked, I took a look at it just now, here’s what I came up with:
Stats in RotTK3 are stored directly in the hex.
For example, take Sun Jian. His stats are 84/72/90/87/81/90 (Int, Pol, War, Chrm, Army, Navy).
In the hex, his stats are stored around 0x000AA290.
They’re stored in a different order, though. The second column is the start of the stats:
81 (Army), 90 (Navy), 90 (War), 84 (Int), 72 (Pol), 87 (Chm), encoded as the block (515A5A544857). The rest of the values might contain hidden stats, but I haven’t done any testing. After the values, my hex editor even has the name: Sun Jian (53756E000000004A6961), separated by 4 spaces in the hex (which looks standard).
Let’s say I want to give him 100 War, because I think he was particularly awesome.
I would change the third stat hex value to 100 (0x64)…

save, and load up the ROM.
Check in and…

he has 100 War. Changing other values for characters is similar.
Let’s say I want to give Cheng Pu his stats from, say, RTK8 (I made up Army and Navy).

I would search the text of the ROM for "Cheng" – it turns out he has only 2 spaced between surname and given – search manually for Pu, and change the appropriate values.
It’d be a bit tedious to change a lot of values, but changing just a few shouldn’t be too much of a problem.

ParticipantI was checking the hex values. That’s the exact same way I found the ROTK4 stats as well. I don’t know why I can’t find them in 3. I also tried searching for the name as well, but it didn’t work. It worked nicely with 4 though. I’ll go try it again.
November 3, 2006 at 2:32 pm #22795Niahak
ModeratorThe order they’re stored in is what got me the first couple times; I had to search for a couple different values. Army, Navy, War, Int, Pol, Chm should be the order.

KeymasterSomeone should hack Yuan Yin and give him all 100’s.
I wonder if there is a way to change when characters are "supposed" to die. Like are characters given a numerical timetable (say, 193-198 for Dong Zhuo for example)?

ModeratorIt seems likely it’d be in there somewhere, but the way they encode it might be odd. It could be birthdate and lifespan…
And then, when you get into dates, they could just have normalized them (i.e. 130 is "0" so all birthdates are coded as X where real one is "130 + X").
Maybe I’ll take another look tonight and see if I can compare a few officers to get a feel for how it might be stored.
November 3, 2006 at 8:15 pm #22798Terranigma Freak
ParticipantLOL, so much for me being the hack for this game. Ah well, I really just started to learn how to hex edit anyway. I’ll get right to arranging more stats.
To be honest, I think hacking ROTK4 would be even better. ROTK4 has more features with the skills and all that.
Hey Niahak, do you think you can also find the character’s sense of honor? There’s a hidden value that determines how honorable he/she is. The higher the value, the less likely they’ll betray you. This number can be edited in the PUK versions of the game. I mainly want to tweak the created officer’s honor. They seem to be more disloyal than Lu Bu for some reason.
November 4, 2006 at 3:44 am #22799thechieftain
ParticipantMore disloyal tha Lu BU, is that even possible?
