Suikoden IV Beginning
Razril : Middleport : Chiepoo : Keneth : Glen : Jewel : Paula : Tal : Katarina : Snowe : Lazlo : Illuya : Brandeau : Rune of Punishment
So you pick your character and some settings (choose the first voice, it’s more manly). You’ll start off in a ship battle, and you should probably go through the tutorial although it’s pretty simple. Pick someone who has a rune that is strong against one of the enemy’s runes. It doesn’t really matter though, you’ll lose and the enemy will board your ship. Snowe will give you details on combat battles but if you’re a Suikoden veteran you can probably skip it. In the battle, attack normally or use the Friendship Unite between Lazlo and Snowe (I’m going to use the name Lazlo for the Hero since that is his name). It’ll end eventually and then Glen will ask you for a duel. Accept his proposal. Duels are very similar to those in the older games. It’s a rock paper scissors concept, and you have to guess based on his quotes that he gives you. It’s never really that difficult, take him out and the “graduation mock battle” will be over.
You’ll now gain control of Lazlo. Go inside (behind you) and use the Save Point. Go back outside, up the deck and talk to Kenneth and then Tal. Now you’ll see the opening sequence of the game. Afterwards you’ll be in Razril. Go to the courtyard, and then the first door on the east part of the room. You’ll see a treasure in your sight, grab it for the Old Book Volume 9. Leave via the door you came in, and then go in the next door in the courtyard. This leads to three doors, one of which being your room. Inside is a Save Point and a treasure containing a Water Rune and a Steamed Bun. Leave and enter the third door in the courtyard to trigger a scene with Glen. It’s a big speech. Glen brings up the name Troy, and when he concludes you are to go to the festival. Head back into the Hall of Knights and then go east towards the port. You’ll see a Save Point along the way. Keep going along the way and another scene will ensue, with Snowe getting a torch and giving it to you. Talk to all the people in the center path holding a torch to light their’s. Keep going straight and you’ll be in an area with all the other graduating knights. Speak with them all a few times and then return to the port area where a Nay-Kobold (the great Chiepoo) will alert you of a girl getting kidnapped. If you “Pet” the cat near the entrance of that area, it’ll give you a Medicine. Now it’s time to return to the square with all the knights. Talk to two of them to get them to join (I chose Paula and Tal). Head to the back streets now.
You’ll fight some random battles, but they aren’t hard. Keep pushing forward and get the Mushroom on the west side a little farther down. Just a bit farther and there will be a huge opening on the left, which you should explore. In a small alley you’ll find a girl cowering and a Pirate looking at her. Talk to him and you’ll be in a battle against the Kidnapper and the Kidnapper’s Underling. Just attack them and use the Snowe Lazlo Unite Combo. Nothing tough. Search behind the crate afterwards and you’ll get a treasure map. Head back towards the Hall of Knights and answer yes to Snowe’s question about going to bed.
The next morning you should go to the Training Hall and spar with one of the students. You can get a few levels doing this. Talk to everyone and they’ll be looking for Snowe, so go find him yourself. He’s in the Hall of Knights (actually you can get him before the Training Hall). Back to the Training Hall where you can spar as long as you want with that one Knight, but go to your other party members and put two of them in your party (Paula and Kenneth for me). You’ll be in another easy battle. After you can change your members, so use this time to familarize yourself with the four choices you have. I don’t know why but I like Paula (probably because she’s not human) and Kenneth (either the haircut or the Lightning Rune). You are to go to the port and leave, but explore the town some more. You can go in the shops, so do that, and search the left part of the Rune Shop for a Medicine. Also you can affix the Water Rune (in his room) to Lazlo if you’d like. The Inn has a Treasure Map in the northeast part of the room (on the dresser). The lady in light blue outside the Inn has a mushroom that she’ll give you. Return to the harbor area and go near the ships. You’ll be prompted to choose between two jobs, so take the letter delivery.
Now you’ll be shown (subjected to) ship travel. Ugg. Slow, random battles everywhere, hard to navigate around land, etc. Well you are to go to Middleport, which is in the southeast (Press O to see the map). Now don’t go to the northwest part of this island; the port is in the southeast part so you’ll have to work your way around. You’ll get 1000 potch for the delivery, and then you can explore the town.
Head to the Inn and search the southeast corner of the room for another Treasure Map. Go outside now and west a little towards the Item Shop. The treasure reveals 500 Potch. You should probably upgrade your armor here. Also, it’s a good idea to take Snowe’s good armor (Chain Main, Scale Shield, Leather Boots) off of him and onto someone else. Trust me, it’s better off not on Snowe. Also you could visit the Smithery and get those weapons upgraded if you have the cash. Go to the very back of the village and you’ll see a house. There is an Antitoxin to the east of it and a treasure (Mushroom) to the west of it. Return back to the square area and up the stairs when you see them. Take an east and get the Fancy Console. Not much else to do, so talk to the port guy and get back on the ship.
If you haven’t done so already, Anchor the ship and get the treasure inside the deck (Medicine x 5). Return to Razril and report on your success. They’ll thank you and then say there is another one at Middleport (must be level 5). Head on over there and talk to the guys around the port to learn about the monster. Return to your boat and one of the next encounters you’ll have is with a Damp Hairball. It can be pretty tough, using the second level Water Rune spell to attack your entire party. If you put some money into your weapons and armor, you should be fine. Kenneth’s Lightning Rune is definitely a big help, and you’ll get 2000 potch from the guy at the port. Back to Razril now.
At the port, Katarina will talk to you and tell you and Snowe to visit them so head towards the courtyard. You’ll be introduced to a guy named Ramada, who doesn’t seem too impressed with you actually. Anyway head to the port when ready to do this mission with Ramada. You’ll meet with Snowe and then it’ll be time to return to the audience chamber once more to tell Ramada that you’re ready. Iluya is a good distance to the northeast, so set sail and you’ll soon get to an event with Snowe who questions the rune cannons that you are transporting. Also you’ll see Glen and Katarina worrying. Talk to Snowe and you’ll be attacked by a rune cannon and Snowe will be hurt. He “can’t move his arm” and he’ll act like a coward this whole time basically. Choose “Let’s Fight”.
You’ll be thrusted into a naval battle against two Pirate Brandeau ships. It’s really quite simple though; just match up your two rune guys with the one’s that their two are weak against. You should have no problem matching up your strengths then. After the victory your ship will be boarded by Brandeau and an Assassin. Take out the Assassin first with both characters and then Brandeau. More scenes afterwards and Lazlo will be in a duel with Brandeau for his life. It can be tricky to pick what he is going to choose, but soon he’ll start repeating himself and you’ll get breaks. If Lazlo is fully developed you should be able to take him down. Afterwards, both of you will be near death. Brandeau will have a rune go crazy and Glen will acquire it. More scenes and you’ll be back.
Snowe will want to go into town and get some medicine. Several scenes along the way. Then return to the kitchen area to get Glen’s meal and deliver it to him. More scenes with Glen and then leave outside. You’ll be attacked! Talk to your comrades and run out to the ship and talk to the night to initiate a ship battle. “Retribution”, as Pirate Dario is attacking.
Try your best to match up with their runes. I didn’t have a match for their Wind Rune unfortunately. Regardless, the enemy never utilized that advantage and only used the Fire Rune (Jewel had Water Rune to match up). After the battle, Snowe will get overzealous and pursue the enemy as they retreat, so choose to help Snowe and his great decision making. But just as you come in, they retreat. Katarina will tell you to go to Glen, and he’ll commend you on your alertness and he punches Snowe for his selfishness. Another scene with Snowe getting upset, then go Save/Rest in your room. Go to the kitchen and bring the meal to Glen. More scenes and then you’ll be involved in yet ANOTHER attack.
By the time you gather your forces, the pirate enemies will have already landed and are just outside at the port. You’ll get in a fight with a few skilled pirates. Three fights actually. Utilize the Lightning Runes if you have them. Meanwhile there will be a scene with Glen for a minute, and then the enemies will look to fire. Glen will be up on the roof of building using the Rune of Punishment. He’ll scorch the enemy ships and they’ll retreat. Katarina will tell everyone to assist the injured, but you should turn around and head to the third floor Spire to see Glen. As you go up there you’ll see him struggling and suddenly he’ll transfer the rune to you as Brandeau did to Glen. Snowe will witness all of this in normal Snowe hysteria mode. He will then tell the knights that it was you that did it. What a fucker, wouldn’t it be nice to just kill him?
More scenes going on, and keep running and attacking the shadows. You’ll hear the Vingerhuts trying to screw you over and blame it on you. Afterwards Katarina will come in and tell her you didn’t kill him. Regardless, you can’t get out of this, and you will be banished from Gaean forever. Two of your trusted characters (Paula and Keneth for me) will be with, as will Chiepoo, on this exiled ship.
