Suikoden IV 4 Dario Pirate Nest
OBEL Kingdom
As you return back to Obel you should see a scene with Dario and Nalleo. They’ll have mistaken you for the Cray Trading Company and Cray is not a nice guy. A war battle with Pirate Dario will ensue right away.
Pirate Dario will have a Wind and Fire Rune equipped on his ship so get a Fire and Water rune respectively to match up against his weaknesses. This will likely mean Tov and Desmond and then whoever your four best characters are for your fighters. Since the enemy’s runes are weak against fire and neutral against fire, you might as well continue to use the Fire Rune as you cannot get hit. Nalleo is the one who uses the Wind rune but she tends to go less than the Fire Rune so this may mean a lot of neutral turns.
After you win this battle Dario will be admonished by Lady Kika, Sigurd, and Hervey. They’ll go their own way and you can enter Obel finally. You should have a Message from Desmond at this point. If you go to the Obel Inn you may get a scene with Cedric who runs from the Inn keeper to avoid a bill. Follow him back to headquarters since you have to go there anyway.
Talking to Desmond you will learn that the King Lino En Kuldes has asked you to go to Nay Village to recruit Oleg. Bring some of your newer members to get more of them caught up to speed. Rita from that stupid Rita Pon game is actually quite a magician so I suggest you use her with a Lightning Rune and see for yourself.
Nay VillageAs you leave you’ll get a scene with Graham Cray, The Governor, Troy and Colton. After that it’s time to starting sailing towards Nay Island. It’s a long sail as you probably remember. When you get there head up a few screens until you get to the Inn. On the other side of the bridge is Oleg and a scene will happen when you talk to him as he gets you to pay for the Inn.
During the night you’ll get some scenes with an immense power that Graham Clay enjoys seeing. Rest after this and go back to the other side of the bridge near the Inn.
You’ll look through Oleg’s Device to see an explosion of some sorts. Afterwards you’ll hear people have washed up to the shore. Something must have happened at Iluya Island last night. Run down to the beach and you’ll see the Iluya Cafe owners washed up but apparently alive. Oleg will join you and sail to Obel with you.
Obel Village
Back in Obel you are to go to Lino En Kuldes and Oleg will show him the scenery he recorded of Iluya Island. Flare and Setsu will be distressed over the situation and Lino tells you not to go out on your boat. Oleg does join permanently here though. Rest up and then you might as well head back to headquarters through the Cliff Path.
In the second screen you’ll be ambushed by Ramada, Akaghi and Mizuki, although it’s only the latter two that are fight you. This is why you rested up, although it’s not that hard. Use your best spells like Thunder Runner, Soaring Bolt and the Rune of Punishment. These two are fast but it’s likely you’ll kill at least one of them in the first turn with high powered spells. Their HP isn’t that high and once one is gone it’s easy to maul the other.
After the battle Ramada explains that they are there to get the Rune of Punishment from Lazlo but after losing they submit and request their lives be spared. Desmond runs out and it’s time to head to the Royal Palace. There will be some discussion with Lino and Setsu and then Ramada, Akaghi, and Mizuki will join the 108 stars of destiny.
It’ll be night time after a few scenes so head back to Headquarters. Before you can get there you’ll be Defending Obel against a Kooluk Invasion. More scenes with Lino and others in war, and you’ll get the option of using the Rune of Punishment. Do so and watch an entire fleet of ships get hit.
This battle will be against the Third Kooluk Fleet. Two Obel Ships with Lino in charge of one and Lazlo the other. As you can see you’ll want Fire Rune’s like Tov or Desmond again to match up with the wind runes the enemy has. Wind Runes will be good against the earth rune also. As for members on deck you should have eight allowing you to put four on each. Hopefully you took my advice and built up some others instead of just the ones you started off with as this battle will be that much easier then. This is all assuming your ship is boarded which could also not happen. Stick to your rune matchups and stay a decent length from the enemy and you should be fine.
After the battle Lazlo will collapse with Chiepoo looking on. More Rune of Punishment sidequests going on in Lazlo’s mind. At the end you’ll fight Brandeau’s Shadow, an easy battle. You will acquire the third level spell for Rune of Punishment, and a poor one in my opinion (Voice of Death, “very fatal” to 1 enemy).
Save and go outside the room for some scenes with all of the characters you have, talking about what they would do if they got the Rune of Punishment. Put some characters into your party and leave headquarters. You’ll hear a loud noise so head back and go to the War Room where Lino will tell you it’s time to flee with headquarters, which is actually a ship.
Flare joins you so leave the saloon towards the town and you’ll get more Kooluk scenes with Troy and Colton. Go into town and talk to everyone in the first area and you’ll get more scenes this time with your characters preparing for departure. If you stayed at the Inn and did the Cedric sidequest you’ll find him in this area also where he’ll join (if you didn’t get him through Louise earlier). Go down the stays to the lower area and talk to Yu who was previously charging you to be healed. Yu will join you now. Near him is the trading post where Adrienne is, and she’ll join you of course. Talk to the two ladies in the area on the other side of this where the Rune shop and armor shop are. These two laundry specialists join the ship and you get another scene. Go down to the beach and talk to the fisherman down there and he’ll go to the ship as well, and then Flare suggests you two should return also.
As you return Flare decides to stay and when you go to the War Room and inform the others, Setsu will stay as well. Good riddance. Tell Lino En Kuldes that it’s time to go and you’ll see some funny scenes with Setsu. The cliff will be destroyed and your ship and headquarters will be leaving. Troy will go after you but will be a second late. Troy will establish an interim Kooluk government as the citizens look on in horror.
You’ll be on your ship now so talk to everyone, including Nico at the very end of the boat. Try to enter the ship and you’ll get a scene with Kika and she’ll invite you to the Nest of Pirates. First though there are plenty new recruits to be had.
Na-Nal Harbor
Go to Na Nal. Talk to Ugetsu the fisherman nearby and he’ll join if you offer the ship’s services. Further in Na-Nal and towards the Inn (take the east fork in the next section). Inside is Manu who you probably met outside your HQ in Obel. He will join if you allow it.
Further in is the Rune Shop, where you can request to see the Rune Mistress. It is Jeane from past Suikoden’s. You can ask her to take a rune off or put one on, or you can ask her to join. Of course ask Jeane to join and you now have a rune mistress and a powerful magician on your side. Search the right part of the building for a Treasure Map and leave the Rune Shop. A bit more east and you’ll see the Armor Shop with some good deals and another Treasure Map left of the building.
One more area back and you’ll be in the area where you dueled Mitsuba but now Maxine is here and she challenges you to a fight. She has quite a bit of HP but still shouldn’t last more than a few rounds if you have some good characters. Maxine says grr after the battle and that’s it, she disappears. You’ll fight her later. This is about all the new stuff you can do in Na Nal.
Nay Island
You’ll see a Message Bottle on the shore. It says “Coral…donuts…small island…”. Start going towards the Nay-Kobold settlement and you’ll see Maxine again. Be careful this time because if you aren’t leveled up, you will die by the hands of her Wind Rune and Shining Wind. 325 HP to the entire party is a lot to overcome, unless you can time it where you unleash your best spells just at the right time before she gets it off. At this point in the game you’ll probably want to do this later but congrats if you beat her.
In the next area with the suspension bridge, Viki will appear and then disappear. Continue on into the village. Talk to Bang at the lottery desk right as you walk in and he’ll want to leave Nay-Kobold for your ship. The residence in the upper area is Bartholomew‘s home. If you’ve recruited Perrault and checked out his initial newspaper you can then recruit Bartholomew at his home in Nay. Leave the Nay Kobold settlement and you’ll see Viki. Allow her to join and she gives you the Glowing Hand Mirror. Use this immediately and you’ll return to the Obel Ship. How useful.
Iluya Island
You haven’t been here yet but rest assured you’ll need powerful characters to survive. Before coming here, buy a Flower Seed from the Nay Kobold Trading Center and bring Mizuki along with.
As you enter, near you is an Ocean Rune Piece and Treasure Map. Walk all the way until you hit a wall and can go left. You’ll see a Chinchilla Stand, and then to the next area. Careful here as the chest to your right that is partially hidden is an Angel Hairball. Fighting an Angel Hairball is death if you aren’t levelled up or have Silent Lake to neutralize it’s crazy magic casting abilities. You acquire a Guardian Garb for defeating the Angel Hairball. The boxes a little farther down have a Treasure Map for you to take, and enter the nearby building. Grab the Ocean Rune Piece and Treasure Map that comes along with it. Further down is a deck with Simple Wallpaper on it.
The next screen has the Destroyed Town of Iluya. You will see Nataly to your right looking at what once was a window. She’ll join and take care of your Window Settings. To the opposite side is a treasure chest with an Angel Hairball that will likely slaughter you, read above. Your reward for defeating it is a Hero’s Armor. Go back another screen and you’ll see Izak. He misses the flowers that were once there and asks you for a Flower Seed. Well, maybe you already have it if you did as I told you a little earlier, if not go to Nay Kobold Trading Center for one. Also if you brought Mizuki you can go a little to the right of where Izak was, in one of the secluded areas you should find Kate. She seems treacherous but will join if you choose. Also back in this area is an Old Book Vol 7.
Donut Island – To get here teleport to Mordo and go about directly east, and maybe a little south to find the little Donut Island. If you got the Message Bottle in Nay you’ll see Rene there, who will join you and offer to help with your various Treasure Maps.
Obel Ship – Since you’ve acquired Ugetsu, go down to the Rear Deck to speak with him. Shortly thereafter he’ll catch his friend Shiramine, who will join you. Now Shiramine will cast the net for you if you like. If you cast the net at the Nay Island Harbor and then take your ship to Na Nal, you will be able to bring the net in and catch Lilan. She’s a friend of Lilin.
Rest in your room and try to leave, Tov will mention something. Go down to Deck 5, the very bottom and enter the room on the left. This is the Cultivation Room. Inside is Mao, who deals with mushrooms. These mushrooms can increase magic spells or inflict status ailments on enemies based on how you have Mao grow them. Go back to your room again and rest and Tov will again mention something about that Cultivation Room. At the Cultivation Room Mao has a friend there, and it is Nao. He is the Mint specialist and like Mao will grow Mint’s based on what you tell him.
Deserted Island – Take your ship here and enter the cave. Release all the easy creatures of course. At the end is Taisuke, and he wants you to get his clothes at the entrance. Go back and get them and return them to Taisuke. He’s an ass and you need to return outside of the cave and then go back in again to recruit him.
Nest of Pirates
Go left initially for a Pirates Bracer in a chest. Near here is a Treasure Map in a barrel. Check out the shops and go inside to the bar to advance the storyline. Kika is here and after your talk you should go in her room and get the Ocean Rune Piece and Treasure Map. Phil is around and he’s a tailor that will join you. Of course you also get Kika, Hervey, Sigurd, Dario and Nalleo
To continue the story you’ll have to go out and then back in, but be prepared for a tough war battle. Do you have your best magicians with multiple runes to match up against the enemy? Having Viki, Kate, Pablo, Jeane and other good magicians equipped with Fire / Earth would be especially wise in this particular battle. It might be wise to make a separate save before you enter the Pirate’s Nest again.
Katarina will have washed up and you’ll talk to her in Kika’s Room and learn some things about Snowe and Razril. Save your game in that separate slot if you’re smart and when you leave you’ll see some scenes with a green suit Snowe coming your way.
Snowe War Battle – Former Friend
Two ships and two ships. It’s best to try to isolate this into two one on one battles but the enemy may not go along with this plan. Either way, as you can see the Earth Rune is either neutral or strong against Snowe’s ship and the Fire Rune is either neutral or strong against the other Kooluk Ship so as long as you have one rune user of each in both of your ships, you can’t lose. Unless of course they surround you and attack from angles that you can’t counter from. If you can maneuver your ships well this shouldn’t happen.
After the battle, chase Snowe to Razril. It’s a long and grueling trip so have plenty of magic users on hand. When you get there you’ll see some scenes and will be offered a choice with Snowe. It’d be best to choose the first or second if you want to see him or recruit him later. If you choose the third, well, Snowe will be dead. You are to sail back or use the Blinking Mirror to Nest of Pirates and then Hermitage Island to meet this Elenor Silverburg.
