1991 New York Mets Team Analysis : Maybe not quite as good as Los Angeles, but pretty good overall. I usually underestimate them but they’re probably better than the other NL teams statistically. Vince Coleman at the top of the order has a running speed of 18 (with 20 the max and only two players being there). 1-6, the Mets are tough hitters. Even Mackey Sasser at 8 is a good catcher with .300 average and 10 HR’s. JEFF (Tom Herr) is the only below average offensive starter – even better though, the Mets have two decent backups. Put Daryl Boston in there for Herr and you still have a few good bats on the bench in Elster and Teufel. Kevin McReynolds and Hubie Brooks are the #4 and #5 hitter, and they are eerily similar in numbers (both hit about .285 with 28 HR’s). McReynolds has good speed though making him one of the best overall offensive players in the league. Howard Johnson has quite a bit of pop for a #6 hitter and Gregg Jefferies is anything but a black hole at #2. An incredibly balanced offense.
Frank Viola is not a hard-throwing Ace but he has great movement and 38ST. Dwight Gooden has lost some speed on his fastball at this point but it is still at 91 with a 35ST. David Cone has the fastest fastball but only has a 32ST. Sid Fernandez and Alejandro Pena are generic players, while John Franco is like Viola – Great movement and stamina make up for the lack of speed on the fastball.
