2011 DoaE Huo Hu Award Nominations
This will be the 2011 DoaE Huo Hu Award Nomination Thread. Rules:
– Only nominate mods with significant updates in the last year that are finished or in beta who have not previously won an award in that category (but since this is the first year we can nominate any existing finished or beta mod).
– YOU CANNOT NOMINATE YOUR OWN MOD.
– If there is any category that I left out, feel free to add it if you think it is relevant.
Known eligible mods:
Destiny of an Emperor 2.0: Cao Cao Edition
I don't think the Wu mod by CaoJay or the Yellow Scarves mod were completed. Can anyone confirm?
Let's hear your nominations.
November 30, 2011 at 5:46 pm #41387MiDKnighTModeratorI'll start with my nominations. First let me say that I've enjoyed a lot of these mods and these nominations are just my personal opinion so no hate mail plz :)
Best Story line/Text Modifications: Destiny of an Emperor 2.0 – Cao Cao Edition – This was the first mod I played that completely deviated from the Liu Bei and the gang story line. It had massive text updates and a completely different story. Really liked the story on the Yuan Shu mod too. I tend to favor mods that change the main cast of characters and change the story around.
Best Map Modifications: Yuan Shu Mod – It was between this one and "Rise of Lu Bu" as both have a lot of map modifications but the Yuan Shu mod actually moved towns and stuff around so I'll nominate that one.
Best Battle System / Tactic Modifications: Ludmeister's Remix 2.0 – Agility based attacks, DoaE2 damage, 8 tactics, each general using their own tactics, plus a completely revamped tactic system. Not to mention totally revamped weapons and armor.
Best Difficulty Modifications: Destiny of an Emperor 2.0 – If I remember correctly this was the first mod that really set a new standard of difficulty for mods.
Best Portraits: "Rise of Lu Bu" – First some cleverly spliced original portraits then brand new unique portraits gets the nomination from me.
Best ROM Tool: DoaEditor – Of course, no explanation needed.
Best ROM Enhancement: Agility Based Attacks – This enhancement makes the AGI stat nearly as important as STR and INT and makes Qi Shou into a very effective and powerful tactic.
Best Comedy in a Mod: "Rise of Lu Bu" – It's between this one and the Yuan Shu mod. Both had some really funny lines. Will go with Rise of Lu Bu by a hair.
EDIT: Since Rise of Lu Bu was already nominated, I will switch my nomination to this since it has many LOL moments. Liu Bei and his young boys… Huo Hu and his powder… LOL
ROM of the Year: Destiny of an Emperor 2.0: Cao Cao Edition – This is the mod that got me into DoaE ROM hacking. Totally different story, different characters, increased difficulty, several new innovations at the time, easter eggs, and more. So this gets my nomination for the first annual rom of the year. Of course there are also other mods that I really enjoyed.
November 30, 2011 at 5:48 pm #41388DragonAtmaModerator2011 isn't over yet; what if the Jin Xuan mod comes out December 28th and turns out to be more awesome than capcom declaring there'll be a DoaE4?
November 30, 2011 at 5:49 pm #41389MiDKnighTModeratorStill need time for people to play it right? :)
November 30, 2011 at 6:11 pm #41390DragonAtmaModeratorYou mean you WON'T play through it nonstop for December 29th-31st? Clearly you must hate DoaE! :Þ
December 1, 2011 at 2:10 am #41391Zhuge LiangParticipantBest Story line/Text Modifications: Destiny of an Emperor 2.0 Cao Cao mod – yep a huge amount of text has been updated and I really liked the part when Ma Chao left because Cao Cao killed his father, nice story.
Best Map Modifications: Rise of Lu Bu mod – Yuan Shu mod is a candidate too, but I guess I'll take this.
Best Battle System / Tactic Modifications: Ludmeister's Remix 2.0 – Of course, many improvements from this mod. I unhesitatingly nominate this.
Best Difficulty Modifications: Destiny of an Emperor 2.0 Cao Cao mod – Some of the mods here are hard too, but this is the hardest.
Best Portraits: Yuan Shao mod – I remember a Wu mod created by CaoJay also had very good portrait insertion, but this gets my nomination.
Best ROM Enhancement: Destiny of an Editor – Viva Niahak.
Best Comedy in a Mod : Rise of Lu Bu – sonic.penguin will know why I chose this.
ROM of the Year: Destiny of an Emperor 2.0 Cao Cao mod – Well this derseves my recommendation, it was made in 2009 and still be good enough to be considered one of the best DoaE mods ever created. Play it and you'll know why.
DoaE gave birth to Huo Hu.
December 1, 2011 at 3:13 am #41392MiDKnighTModeratorThanks for your nominations Zhuge. Anybody else?
December 1, 2011 at 3:25 am #41393ludmeisterParticipantI'm afraid I haven't played enough mods to really sound off on all of the categories, but I'll make a go of it.
Best Story line/Text Modifications: Yuan Shao's Revenge – I really thought this mod was well done, and to be honest I wasn't sure how the author would pull the Yuan Shao cast off. It was well done. I really appreciated that the people involved in some cases pre-dated stock DoaE, which would have been Yuan Shao's glory days.
Best Map Modifications: I have not played any mods which have made more than cursory edits to the map.
Best Battle System / Tactic Modifications: I'm going to nominate the Yuan Shao Revenge mod again, for the 8 Tactics system and for the Life/Raise tactics, which are very welcome touches in a pitched battle… depending on whose side has those tactics
Best Difficulty Modifications: Destiny of an Emperor 2.0 mod. I cannot vouch for the Cao Cao mod, but DoaE 2.0 was pretty hard.
Best Portraits: Yuan Shao's Revenge. I have portrait/sprite envy
Best ROM Enhancement: Destiny of an Editor. All of it.
Best Comedy in a Mod : Of the mods I've played, I'm going to nominate Destiny of an Emperor 2.0. Why? Wang. Enough said.
ROM of the Year: I don't believe I've played enough mods to be able to make an informed decision on this category. Right now, the front runner is Yuan Shao's Revenge.
By the way, where might I download this "Cao Cao mod"? I'm interested to try it out, based on the recommendations here…
When all else fails... manipulate the source code.

December 1, 2011 at 10:39 am #41396unfyModeratorBest Story line/Text Modifications: Rise of Lubu
I tend to agree with many of the nominations above, and I'll admit to not being able to give a few of the other nominees in this category a fair shake yet (maybe by year's end?)…
but… the plethora of changes, and overall theme is quite consistent…. and the fictional story progression is in place as well. Comedy is nice.
I believe I got up to the Liu Bei treaty idea in Yuan Shao mod, which really was an excellent theme change for the getting-old-sword-routine.
ROM of the Year: Destiny of an Emperor 2.0
…. i… dunno if DOAE 2.0 was this year or prior. if it was this year, then it has to have my nomination as the father of the current mod flavors. Yes, DOAE Cao Cao expanded up the possibilities by starting off with a different crew. Lud's new system will prolly be seen as '3.0' style system that will prolly replace current stuff :).
—
Non nomination stuff:
Comedy: i agree with everyone's noms — Bwahahahaha!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :P
Difficulty: this one is a hard one to actually pick. While the ultra-difficult mods are interesting in their own ways…. I found myself resorting to save state abuse far too often in them. There's a major detraction of fun when doing that.
To me, use of save states in DOAE is akin to modern games where death isn't all that catastrophic and you can just grind against one situation incessantly until you manage to get lucky or get it done right. It's not particularly fun, and there is a far less reward feeling with it.
The Yuan Shao mod seemed to be more difficult but fairly easy going from the get go. Haven't tried the updated version yet, nor did I get to complete the original. I actually seemed to like the balance it had up until that point (I think up to death of Yuan Shu was where I left off before save file corruption).
Rise of Lu Bu had a harsher start of the difficulty curve, but not out-of-reach so. A couple fights were on the silly hard side, but for the most part it seemed to do well. I think the Wu / Wei invasion of JingZhou is only spot where the difficulty ramp was almost too much to bear.
Lud's pre-2.0 mod I just finished. Wei was mostly a cake walk sadly… and i beat the game at lvl46, but everything up through Wu was great. The different items in expected spots was a very nice touch. Need to try the newer one with agi-attacks and more tactic stuffs.
I … can't really nominate a mod for this category just yet. I don't want stupid hard, and I don't want cake walk.

need to play through a couple other doae mods and hopefully get a few more nominations in.
December 1, 2011 at 1:12 pm #41397MiDKnighTModeratorI agree with you unfy. But the category is "Best Difficulty Modifications" not "Most Difficult Mod". But then again, "best difficulty" is typically a matter of opinion. Some people like really hard mods, some like somewhat challenging but not overwhelming.
Let's hear some more nominations from the folks who haven't nominated yet. Thx to those who put in their nominations!
December 1, 2011 at 9:37 pm #41398sonic.penguinModeratorBetween the mods I have played so far:
DOAE 2.0
Rise of Lu Bu (can't elect as it is my own)
Wei Mod
Yuan Shao Mod
Yuan Shu Mod
Ludmeisters 2.0 Remix Mod
Best Story line/Text Modifications: I'd almost say the between the Yuan Shu mod and the Wei mod, but I'm picky on a good story, probably the #1 thing I look for in a mod. I still think these need to be improved*
Best Map Modifications: Yuan Shu mod took me a while to figure out where I was at the start. It gave me some inspiration though for my upcoming mod.
Best Battle System / Tactic Modifications: DOAE 2.0 as renaming the tactics really brought the game up to par as well as the tweaking of officer stats to make use of warriors/tacticians. Based my Rise of Lu Bu mod on this as a base.
Best Difficulty Modifications: I think everyone needs more practice at this one, can't really elect any particular mod.Best Graphical Changes: Yuan Shao mod was the first one I played that used new portraits, sprites outside of DOAE. While not necessarily my favorite choice of open mouthed individuals, it was the first to use these + new colors which other mods are using like the Yuan Shu and Rise of Lu Bu Mod.
Best ROM Enhancement: DOAEditor, and the ability to change all sorts of officer attributes at text at whim… at least when it doesn't error out your whole mod :)
Best Comedy in a Mod: Yuan Shao mod, the moment Cao Cao slaps Cao Hong :cactuar:
Best NEW Gameplay Modification: Agility Attacks/8 Tactics by MidKnighT and Ludmeister.
ROM of the Year: No verdict yet, everyone is still making changes that could shift my position.
December 1, 2011 at 9:43 pm #41399MiDKnighTModeratorThanks penguin, so for best story line you have no nomination? Did I read that correctly? Just making sure so we get our nominees right :)
December 1, 2011 at 9:45 pm #41400sonic.penguinModeratorWhen I think of "different story" just swapping out a few character/town names makes it hard for me to chose, I'll have to revisit this.
