Lordyuanshu Edit: Download Destiny of an Emperor Dong Zhuo rom
Hi folks, while I haven't posted on these forums, I have been reading things for a while. I have enjoyed many of your mods, and even completed a few. I am currently working on one of my own, a Dong Zhuo mod! I have the officers adjusted all the way through Shu currently, and have playtested my changes. I will have some tweaks to do, but some of the battles are already pretty intense. I would love to be able to change text, but currently have no knowledge of hex editing. Is there a workable toolbit for this? I'm having some decent succes through the DoaED of changing sprites and pictures, but do not know how to change any outside of that program. Essentially I am limited by what is in the DoaED (which already does tons!) and all my pre-planning. If anyone could point me in the right direction, I could have another nice and playable mod for people in very little time.
I thank you all for all the enjoyment I have received from playing your mods and reading your posts. Hopefully I can give something back!
July 1, 2010 at 2:03 am #37391DragonAtmaModeratorAh, I know the feeling; while DoaEd, DoaTEd, Tile Layer Pro, this board, and part of kongming.net provide instructions on how to change ALMOST everything worthwhile, the Jin Xuan mod is on ice until someone finds a way to change the prebattle taunts.
In the meantime, Atma is working on an FF1 mod…
July 1, 2010 at 3:57 am #37392cabalpapaParticipantThere is a text editor? Does it require using hex or does the program do that for me? If it is user friendly, can I be linked to it or such?
July 1, 2010 at 4:14 am #37393Lord Yuan ShuKeymasterHey cabalpapa, good to have you. A Dong Zhuo mod, that has potential. I believe there was one who attempted to make one, maybe Taishi Ci, but I don't think he got too far with it.
Definitely go for the Destiny of an Emperor Text Editor, it adds a unique feel to a mod. Click the link there to go to the file. It can be tricky because at times the lines don't go in order, but if you have played the game enough you'll have a good idea of where you're editing. One thing I always say that I've learned from playing with the rom, specifically the text editor… Use the same amount of characters that you are replacing (and if you can use words that are already in the game's 'dictionary', even better). And save often when you're working with it.
Good luck :huohu: Eager to see how it goes. Any questions or comments just ask. Maybe make your own thread in the DoaE forum for the mod. We can host it on here as well once you get to a point where you want people to try it.
– Atma. Remember, there are only like 10-12 generic lines for the gate / castle battles. They are used often…but there are probably 20-25 unique lines before battle too that would allow for us to change. Just off the top of my head, every Yellow Turban battle, the Hua Xiong Battle, Lu Bu Battle, Luo Yang, Yang Zhou, Chang An, Nan Yang, etc. So I think you should just leave the generic lines how they are then it won't be complicated. Trying to change them all is asking too much. It does limit your ability to have unique lines throughout the game, but if you really want to build the story for a particular battle you can have the townspeople say similar things, etc.

I've seen some mods change choices (and outcomes) on some of the questions. And even seen some mods change items, and even add items. James' Cao Cao mod comes to mind. Is that done through the text editor? Sorry that I am asking this before I try it.
July 1, 2010 at 5:54 am #37395Lord Yuan ShuKeymasterChanging questions / answers, you should be able to find that text in the editor. I don't believe items are in the text editor. That is one of the few things we don't have access too lest we use a Hex Editor (James' mods are the ones that are heavy in hex editing (item name changes, changes to battle structure, etc)).

Huo Hu's Adventure started Destiny of an Emperor hackingJuly 1, 2010 at 7:20 am #37396DragonAtmaModeratorLYS, keep in mind that DoaTEd shows a hundred or so blank lines and, IIRC the second bank of text has room for ~2000 more characters; giving a unique taunt to everyone in the game would be more than doable once we know where the game assigns taunts to each battle!
July 1, 2010 at 4:16 pm #37397Lord Yuan ShuKeymasterWell right, but there are a lot of variables. Who's to say the rom doesn't crash if we add a bunch of lines like that? It's uncharted waters for us basically. I'm sure you could make it work but it'd be a lot of trial and error trying to make it happen.

Huo Hu's Adventure started Destiny of an Emperor hackingJuly 1, 2010 at 6:10 pm #37398cabalpapaParticipantI'll get to work on some things very soon. I want to make the first round of sweeping changes, add the majrity of the flavor, and then go back and tweek things. It's already very fun! I've put some real challenges in considering what generals you want to use… Lu Bu is so critical, though, at least in early stages… (fittingly). I will likely need to go make him un-AnSha-able, though. Thanks for the help. I'll see how fast I can get this done!
July 1, 2010 at 6:20 pm #37399LinkParticipantHey cabalpapa, it's nice to hear that you're working on another mod; hope you post shots and demos up here.
Just a small question… I was wondering, who is going to be the "Zhuge Liang" of the mod? Li Ru? Jia Xu? :)
July 1, 2010 at 6:55 pm #37400Lord Yuan ShuKeymasterLookin forward to it cabal papa :P Dong Zhuo has a formidable army, though he has plenty of fodder to use too. Interested to see how you work all the officers in there.
Lu Bu, Hua Xiong, Li Ru and Jia Xu come to mind as the most talented along with Zhuo. Of course there are his weakling family members (Dong Min and I think Dong Xuang is the other one?) The treacherous Guo Si and Li Jue. One thing I find useful is to give the weaker allies (like Dong Min for example) a high fixed soldier count when they join so they have some short-term use.
As for screenshots of the rom we can certainly get some too while we play.

Huo Hu's Adventure started Destiny of an Emperor hackingJuly 1, 2010 at 7:31 pm #37401DragonAtmaModeratorSsshhh,m his name is Dong Huang not Dong Xuang…
And as chancellor of china, his forces included Zhang Liao, Wang Yun, Zhu Jun, Huangfu Song, Lu Zhi, and even Cao Cao for a bit.
Have you determined who will be the new Lu Bu? Or will Lu Bu *gasp* still defect?
July 1, 2010 at 8:06 pm #37402cabalpapaParticipantWell, I see some spoiler information is wanted. Some of these answers I can give you already. Screenshots I can work on soon, too, if I can figure out how to upload them for y'all.
"Who is the new Zhuge Liang?" => Currently, I have the mystic Zuo Ci in that slot. While a wonderful strategist, I am doubting you'll want to use him in the front 5.
"Who is the new Lu Bu?" => The Lu Bu slot in this game will not be recruitable, gemsword or no. This slot instead goes to an opposing general that you will dread facing the 7 times you see him… think about who would have had issues finding land to rule if Dong Zhuo doesn't lose.
So far, there seems to be an interesting balancing act between what officers you want to use. The Zhang Fei and Guan Yu go to the polor opposites Lu Bu and Li Ru. Li Ru will likely be your strategist for some time (as he should be). Song Ren and Song Yong go to Cai Yong and Hua Xiong, one of which levels. Dong Zhuo is in Liu Bei's slot, leaving you with the interesting selection of Dong Min (who sat as my 6th slot for a while until now entering Shu he becomes a solid choice).
While people like Huang Zhong, Wei Yan, Pang Tong, and the Ma brothers all reprive their previous roles in JingZhou, they may not prove to be as useful as you would hope.
Ma Teng is never assassinated (this is a clue for the question above), and joins Ma Chao.
I have a special surprise slated for the Jiang Wei slot that has to do with the twist from above, as well. Sima Yi will indeed still be at the final battle, but his supporting cast will be interesting. Du Yu and Deng Ai join your forces at a certain point, as well.
Liu Biao never ambushes Sun Jian, as being unsuccessful against Dong Zhuo changes his plans to return home to Chang Sha.
Wow, I guess this is enough spoiler info for now!
July 1, 2010 at 8:30 pm #37403Lord Yuan ShuKeymasterHaha nice. Spoilers. Looking forward to it even more now, I can tell you know your stuff about RotK. Now get to work! :poison: jk…

Huo Hu's Adventure started Destiny of an Emperor hackingJuly 1, 2010 at 9:48 pm #37404NiahakModeratorHey cabalpapa,
Welcome to LYS! And, such as it is, the DoaE modding community :)
If you have any specific questions about how to use either of the 'Ed's, any of us can help out.
A lot of the spiffy stuff James did is fairly simple (cross fingers) to do in a hex editor – you just need to know what's stored where. For example, to get some of the cooler events in his Cao Cao mod, he actually piggybacked events on each other or changed where they occur. I'm sure he'd be glad to give you advice, but he doesn't come around here too often anymore. You'd have to grab him on SoSZ.
I haven't touched any of the tools in at least a year now, I think, but they should take care of the heavy lifting for you for everything short of portraits.
It sounds like you've put some great thought into a Dong Zhuo what-if scenario. I'm looking forward to what you come up with :)
DragonAtma – my biggest concern with adding more taunts is that there may be a limit to the number of total lines allowed… ordinarily I'd say this is likely 65536 (since it's clearly not 256), but my guess is that some of the other stuff – dictionary lookups, for example – share tabular space inside the ROM, so there'd be a limit on the total number of pointers to anything. Been a long time since I did much digging, though.
