ParticipantNo, not the best game ever but in my opinion top 20 maybe.

Keymasterhehe, I honored it by messing up the HTML…the link was just sending to the main page.
Some caves and those types of things are really annoying because they all have some sort of deterrent (pitfalls, guardians, mushrooms that shrink you, objects to push around, etc). Creative at least. I like that the boss fights are difficult and long. It’s a throwback in that regard. The low total VP + life points is interesting, though it can make you feel like your guys are getting their ass kicked a lot (which does happen, but that’s what the LP is for).
There aren’t many sidequests, but I enjoyed the fact that this game was short for an rpg. In 1996 or whatever though, 30-40 hours was about as long as they got.
Going through it a second time, I noticed the dialogue really isn’t too bad. It’s more the silly sprites that make it look bad (like the Dagoot / Steiner scene, Samson lifting event, etc). The characters don’t BS too much and are straight to the point. The enemies are sneaky and actually seem evil. Not sure I like that the main boss is some weird monster I haven’t seen at all during the rest of the game – though adding him after Shutat and Ramue makes a brutal ending. I remember not knowing about the Resist Jewels the first time I played and I just could not fucking beat those last two battles for the life of me because the magic damage would keep my characters constantly in groggy mode.

ModeratorI dunno, when I tried to get back into it certain parts kept me from sticking with it…
The game is pretty grindy, even at the beginning you have to level up a ton.
Pressing X all the time gets old fast, and if you don’t then you have to level up that much more.
Samson’s curse was a cool idea, though.
I enjoyed it the first time around, but I think I’ve played too many better RPGs to be able to play it anymore – much like FF1 or Dragon Warrior 1.

KeymasterYep the Samson part made the beginning of the game and was basically the direction of the plot for a while. It was nice of them to let you have him for a short bit before he got cursed to show how dominant he is when not afflicted. He is cursed for far too long though, almost half way through the game it seems.
This game does remind me of a Dragon Warrior type game actually with the grindy battles and focus on long caves / tough bosses. You don’t have to grind to the extent of DW1 or 2, but close.

Re-recruiting Percy was also a brilliant idea…though by the end of the game it’s clear that the base 5 characters are probably the best (Finn / Samson / Annie / Edward / Tont)

KeymasterI’ll always remember that this is the game that blew out my TV Tuner function on my vid card.
Simple reason – too much graphical power coming from this game!!!!
