Lord Yuan Shu
KeymasterI mentioned that to James in the other forum and he hasn’t said anything about it.

ModeratorWell, James did mention he can flip events around now…
I could see Lu Bu turning on you the first chance he gets… and the credits rolling indicates it’s more or less a "game over".
…What happens if you don’t give Lu Bu the Gemsword?

KeymasterYou just gotta defeat him, Zhang Fei and Guan Yu.

Participantthat’s it. just beat the three of them and i was able to move on.
the girl in the town said: "i know what happened…" and then told me where to find red hare. so, i guess that means the gemsword doesn’t cut it…
i wonder if it will for the next fight…?

KeymasterI thought that was a cool idea on James’ part, having a villager tell the location of Chi Tu Ma / Red Hare. Much simpler than Lu Bu’s bogus directions

Participant*Laughs* I didn’t think people would see it as a glitch. And you folks call yourselves gamers! LYS understood, though! Yeah, Lu Bu plays a dirty trick on you in Yang Zhou and you are stuck experiencing the nastier side of Lu Bu through the end of Dong Zhuo’s territory and into Yuan Shu’s. A fun experience for DoaE veterans. :)
In DoaE 2.0 I fixed Lu Bu’s Red Hare instructions so they actually lead to the horse (rather than into, what, the mountains?) And a villager is the alternative solution in the Cao Cao edition. I rather like it!
Here are some general answers I typed out for SoSZ. :)
Re: Jingzhou
Yeah, I imagine it is a really scary place right now. I do intend to make some of the battles there really nasty, though. Some toning down will likely take place when scripts for the region are written and the battles are properly tested. And if Liu Bei and Xu Shu actually have access to Hong Shui during that battle some toning down will have to take place there — that would be pretty brutal. Cao Cao has a really smart team, at least!
Re: Gemsword
Yeah, you’re stuck with it. I wanted to find a way to make sure it would be consumed. I actually had a wonderful idea for this, even. One which I laugh about every time I envision it. But it is not presently possible for it to be used. After consideration I decided that a stray item in your seven-party inventory wouldn’t be a huge hinderance. Two free officers’ inventories gives more than enough space for the Smoke Pots and Gullwings necessary for most any objective. And if you are using less than seven characters it is easy to make sure that the dead item remains with someone in billeting. :)
Re: Yang Zhou
First, yes, the events surrounding the Gemsword are intentional, and the cut to credits is quite intentional — and early ending, if you will. It jumps up the difficulty through the territories of Dong Zhuo and Yuan Shu and keeps a certain powerful officer out of Cao Cao’s mix. I think it also adds a very unique and surprising element to the mod. I wanted to do it a little differently but most of what happens here is hard-coded into the game. More on this below.
Re: Yang Zhou (How?)
Most conversation-related events in Destiny of an Emperor are handled through script flags. These script flags are portable and can be assigned to other areas of the game. Meng Da, for example, replaces Zhang Song in this mod, and I intend to see if I can make him recruitable by messing around with these events. I’m pretty certain that I will be able to do this. I think I could make Yi Ji and Zhang Song recruitable in DoaE 2.0 as well. These events are used for all sorts of things, including the Jizhou level-up, game progression (e.g. the point at which you can enter Wu), Ma Chao and Ma Dai offering to join, and the point at which Pang Tong is unleashed into Jingzhou.
On the other hand, some events are hard-coded. They are extremely hard to work around and alter. This includes some important events such as your opportunity to recruit Lu Bu and Sima Yi’s thunder. As such, it would be very hard to change the way these things work. Even if you altered the script, for example, Sima Yi would still summon his thunder. Lu Bu would still be recruited, and would still betray to Yuan Shao.
And these events take priority over nearly all script flags. For example, if you were trying to override Lu Bu’s joining in response to the Gemsword you might toss in an event to make sure he never gets that chance. Say you chose something off-the-wall like the Zhang Jao battle — it is an event flagged when you speak to them. Giving Lu Bu the Gemsword triggers his script which, in turn, trigger the Zhang Jao battle. Your battle against Lu Bu ends and you go into battle with Zhang Jao. You defeat Zhang Jao, you get experience, and the battle ends. Now on the world map the game glitches and you proceed through the remainder of Lu Bu’s script in a broken text box. When finished, Zhang Jao (having replaced Lu Bu’s spot as first in battle) joins with full intention of betraying later to Yuan Shao (probably as Lu Bu). The game unglitches as soon as you get into another battle. You’ve done something messed up but you didn’t achieve your original objective.
But perhaps you were able to find a script-prompted event which takes priority over other hard-coded events, and say you were able to find a way to spin it in such a way that it might seem more natural to other experienced gamers? You’re in business.

Participantit’s not really a big deal at all that we cannot get lu bu. everyone in my party has over 200 strength. i’ll just skip the gemsword part, me thinks…
and from the fort, 1 step down, 8 steps west…that’s pretty accurate to get to chi tu ma, unless i’m missing something…
December 7, 2007 at 8:02 pm #29624Xian Zhu Xuande
ParticipantHis normal instructions are incorrect.
They are something like one step west eight steps south.
December 7, 2007 at 9:04 pm #29625Fallout
Participanti just read it: 8 steps west, 1 step south
it should be 1 step south, about 4 steps, go around the mountain, then back up one, and 4 steps west…

InactiveI felt so embarassed when I gave the Gemsword to Lu Bu, then the credits rolled.
THEN I realised I didn’t save, AND I didn’t use a save state.
Silly me :(
Other than that, I did it again and got up to the ‘end’ (Yuan Shao).
Great mod, keep going, it’s really fun and takes DoaE to a whole new level, can’t wait until the next release is out.

Keymasterhaha that’s no fun. James is evil with these mods both with stuff like that and extremely tough battles.
Hey Acheron, did you get past Jing Zhou too? He updated through there in case you didn’t check that out. It’s brutal though.

InactiveThe first castle was Liu Bei and Xu Shu;
Xu Shu was a big pain in the ass, took me around 3 tries to get him.
Other than that, I forgot about the rest… all I know is I can’t get into Shu unless I technically get Sima Yi/Zhuge Liang to get past the game.

KeymasterYep it’s true. Si Ma Yi is pretty sweet once you get him.
But James hasn’t done any of Shu so you might as well stop there.
