As for Po Yang, well, I was careless the first few times I guess. First of all I did it with Ma Su in my party because I forgot to substitute in Guan Xing (I never even got Zhang Bao – a good thing in my mind). Anyway, I basically took turns using Li Jian (Ma Liang – strategist) on Chen Pu and Zhang Zhao to neutralize them with a Chi Tu Ma-equipped Zhuge. Bu Xi was basically worthless.
Nice?good idea. I am fighting them again now with Zhuge Liang as my strategist, and I suspect I might very well wind up dead again. Having Li Jiang or Yi Xin makes a big difference in battles like this, and I have neither?I have Tui Lu. (As a matter of fact, after typing that, I used Tui Lu to escape, and went back to Cheng Du to set myself up with a different party.)
I like Zhang Bao simply because he has a heavy hitter and has the soldiers to support his attacks, but at these low levels he has been giving me grief. I actually took Ma Dai out of my party so I had a few intelligent people around, but now I?m rethinking that as well. I think I?ll replace him with Ma Chao or Huang Zhong. I?m tired of being beaten on by the likes of Hong Shui. Hehe.

ParticipantI have been counting down the moments to An Sha. :)

KeymasterYeah I think the game is going to pick up a bit now. I cruised through the rest of Wu, although the Sun Huan gate battle was basically a race to get off An Sha before Sun or Xu Sheng turn came up. Taishi got assassinated in the first round and Lu Sun in the second; Sun Quan himself was a pushover and couldn’t stop Ji Mian.

I’m optimistic heading into Wei. Having not picked up Zhang Bao I’ll be able to make room for a permanent 5-person party of Zhuge/Jiang/Zhao/Ma/Guan Xing, my dream team. I’ll be able to switch between an An Sha laden tactician or the more defensive-minded Zhuge.
Still haven’t got Pang Tong. Still haven’t bought ANY weapons or armor (although I’ve spent some money on Gullwings/Smoke Pots/Inns obviously). Didn’t fight the Pirate battle.
Big tip – get that Steel Helmet in the Wu cave. It’s very worth it. The reason I’m not spending any money is because I’m trying to save to buy the best equipment in Ru Nan and Guang Ling.

ParticipantDefeated Chen Pu!

I didn?t really think too much about the ability to ditch Zhang Bao until just recently, and looking at that party lineup you are suggesting, it is a damn good idea. I would love to be able to go into battle with that team. Oh well, next time through I?ll arrange something of that sort. This time around I?ll just have to suffer with a team a little more focused on heavy hitting (which is what I?ve always been used to anyway). I?ve actually learned a few new tricks in the game playing this little challenge. :)
I?m not going to go after the Pirate force either. I originally thought of it, but I decided against it.
When I?m done, I?m going to post the challenge on KMA?perhaps modified to include a few solid rules such as the ones you have been following. Mind holding on to your screenshots and letting me use a few for the feature? With An Sha, Wei should be quite a bit easier to manage. :)

KeymasterYeah I’ll have them uploaded so they aren’t going anywhere. It’s probably a good thing that we’re going through the game using different routes.
Anyway I managed to purchase four Plate Mails and I still have a decent chunk of cash left (I didn’t buy the fifth because there is one in that Wei cave). Wei was easy to run through although I have no idea how I’ll get by Sima Yi. If I use Jiang Wei to An Sha Xu Zhu and Dian Wei, Sima Yi will tear me up. If I have Zhuge, I won’t be able to withstand the physical attacks with the low soldiers…

KeymasterOh yes. With a lot of luck, I defeated Sima Yi on my third try at Ru Nan. I have a feeling this will be one of the hardest battles in the game, harder than the second Sima Yi battle.
I needed a lot of luck. For some reason, Sima Yi was obsessed with using Bei Ji. He probably used it 5 times on himself and at least once with everyone else. First I tried to use Ce Mian the entire battle but I realized I didn’t have the TP to do that. Instead I used Bei Ji on everyone but Zhuge and attacked Xu Zhu and Dian Wei until they died, using Jin Xian to heal myself. Of course during all this time, Sima Yi will be casting whatever spell he chooses. If he chooses the wrong one (Shui Long = reset) you’re screwed. Fortunately he just used Bei Ji, Yi Xin and attacked for the majority of the time that I was taking out Xu Zhu and Dian Wei. Once those two were dead I unleashed Ce Mian until Sima Yi died; I took off roughly 5,000 each round on him, so it took a few Ce Mian’s.

For the record, I think he used Bei Ji a lot because of our low soldier count.
Guan Xing – Nu Long/Plate Mail/Cap
Jiang Wei – Scimitar/Plate Mail/Cap
Zhuge Liang – Battleaxe/Robe/Steel Helmet – Yep, a friggin’ Robe!
Ma Chao – Bo Ye/ Plate Mail/Cap
Zhao Yun – Scimitar/Plate Mail/Nothing
Time to reap the rewards of the Wei cave.

KeymasterIt’s amazing how many levels you gain even without fighting random battles. Well the Wei cave helped a lot. I managed to get everyone a Steel Helmet and Plate Mail after this (there were two Plate Mails in the cave, along with a Steel Helmet and other weaker armor), and with the Wan Sheng, Halberd and Qing Guang we got the best swords left.
The second Sima Yi battle was easy. Give Jiang Wei the Chi Tu Ma and just Ce Mian like you would anyway; they can’t do anything then.

The rest of Wei is pure An Sha and after clearing all the Luo Yang gates….

ParticipantCongrats on your victory, Lord.
Now go finish any games you’ve been playing with "3" in the title.

ParticipantI?m on my way! :)

And yeah, so far Wei hasn?t been too bad. Sima Yi will present the tough battles.

ParticipantGO GO Xian Zhu Xuande!
When you finish, can I interest you in playing DOAE3 Genesis?

Now which one was that? The RPG-style or the RTK-style?
I?m trying to kill Sima Yi before I have to pick up my kids. Haha?
May 9, 2006 at 9:36 pm #19302Taishi Ci
ParticipantIt’s the RPG style one, very similar to the SNES Final Fantasys. I’m trying to finish my walkthrough for it, but only I and Wei Yan have beaten it (although Commie has gotten a little under halfway).
I?m trying to kill Sima Yi before I have to pick up my kids.
Priceless.

ParticipantOh wow? so I assume you are basically going through it without the slightest idea of what is going on? No matter, as long as the game is still fun. Does your strategy guild provide a dolt such as myself with the ability to navigate the game contents and find my way through? :)
May 9, 2006 at 9:48 pm #19304Taishi Ci
ParticipantAt first I was just making it so you’d know how to get from point A to point B, but I’ve expanded it.
Most of the guide has directions through the dungeons and some basic boss strategies. Plus, up to halfway through Chapter 4 I’ve added enemy and treasure lists for dungeons, Boss HP estimates, and shop lists. It takes effort to put all that together when you don’t speak a bit of Chinese. There is some appendix info as well.
And yes, Sima Yi is the last boss.

ParticipantI am impressed that you have managed to put as much together. I can only imagine the amount of time you and other have probably put into it considering the language barrier. I may be interested in having part in the project once Sima Yi has been slaughtered. And much like the ol? Lord, I too am entertaining thoughts of playing the Japanese DoaE.
