ParticipantLevel 15 inside of Xiangyang, just after the Cai Mao battle.
Going through Mt. Fuji and the Saltpeter cave were easily accomplished, and the Orochi and Pythons were defeated quickly. However, I didn’t get a level from Orochi like I thought I would.
Cai Mao was another challenge battle. Cai Mao himself had over 2000 men to start, and his top damage was nearly 300 per attack. Even when I took him under 1000 he still did around 150. Wen Ping also did decent damage and Zhang Yun, though technically a tactition, still took off chunks with his bow. Luckily, Wang Can would either attack (~60 damage) or use CeJian over and over, and Lu Gong is, well, Lu Gong.
Since I didn’t get the level from Orochi, I still had the ChiXin healing, and had to use water tactics due to the location. The first two times I tried to figure out a plan, but died. I tried to go back to Chaisang to get better weapons, but when I got to Xiakou the boat was gone, so I had to make due. Winning run, I made the line-up Guan Ping, Zhang Fei, Guan Yu, Zhao Yun, and Zhuge Liang (Lu Su as tactition). Guan Ping, Zhang Fei, and Guan Yu would attack Cai Mao while Zhao Yun and Zhuge Liang used tactics alternately on Wen Ping and Zhang Yun. Guan Ping healed a couple people with his Copper potions, then I used Herbals from Guan Yu. Eventually I had all three under 1000, but I ran out of TP and had to make Zhuge just defend the rest of the battle. The end was similar to the Jingzhou Cai battle: whittle down their health, then all-out the final person (Wang Can being the last guy).
Time to burn some ships.

ParticipantZhuge Liang: "Ah, ULTIMATE HAPPINESS!"
Just keep living the dream, Zhuge…
Level 17 after picking up the Tally Order, and I now have TongXian.
Chen Jiao’s increased troop count and YanRe make him formidable as an enemy, but luckily he has no real support (although the outlaw armies are getting stronger).

ParticipantA quick question, is the Youyuu bow from the Changsha cave an equipable bow? If so, is there another decent bow user besides Huang Zhong I could give it to to save some money?
March 23, 2006 at 2:26 am #15065Lord Yuan Shu
KeymasterYou know, I think you must give it to Huang Zhong at that point to advance the storyline. Worse yet, Huang Zhong is the only character that can use the bow. Later on you get a weapon called the Youyuu Bow in random battles and it’s the second best Bow in the game….but I don’t think the game lets you have the one that you got in the Jing Zhou cave.
So that Chang Sha battle wasn’t hard?

ParticipantI haven’t gotten there yet, it was just on my mind. I picked up a Youyuu bow from a random battle in my last game and I was wondering if I could use the cave bow.
I fought Xiahou Dun at Xiangyang, Cao Hong at Yiling, and Cao Ren and Cao Ang at Nanjun. Each battle was actually pretty easy, but I’m not sure whether it’s because of the level boost or the Tally Order, although Xiahou Dun did get in a 915 attack his first turn.
Come to think of it, is Yiling mandatory? I got a couple thousand experiance from it, although with all the experiance needed for the later levels, I guess it’ll level out.
Level 18. Time for Lu Bu and the governers.

KeymasterGood question… That’s where you have the choice of going there or going straight to Cao Ren, right? Not sure but I bet the game has some way of making it impossible (probably makes the Cao Ren battle at Nan Jun impossible).

ParticipantI walked through the cave between Han and Southern Jing, at the end are two people who tell me to see Ma Liang for some reason. I would guess they stand there until I settle all the cities beforehand, but it could just be Han since you have to go through Nanjun anyway.

KeymasterYeah, I’ve ran into those guys on plenty of occasions…for me it was always because I didn’t have Yi Ji with, or something like that. Or maybe those were the guys at Ma Liang’s house. Not sure but DoaE2 has plenty of deterrents like that.

ParticipantThe guys disappeared from the cave after Han. They were at Ma Liang’s house, but they moved when they saw Yi Ji.
Forgot to rest the first time I went for Han, so I had to start over. But the next time, I demolished Lu Bu. For some reason, Guan Yu was getting criticals EVERY SINGLE TURN. Makes me wonder if Pang Tong didn’t slip some steroids into that brocade sack…
Took Guiyang since there’s only one real battle there. Now at level 19, I need to settle Ling Ling and Wu Ling, raid the western cave, and then see if I stand a chance at Chang Sha.

KeymasterThat happens to be one of my favorite parts of the game, in both DoaE’s. For some reason settling Jing Zhou is entertaining to me. Yeah, good luck in Chang Sha.

ParticipantAlright, Ling Ling and Wu Ling are settled and the western cave raided.
Here is my current status going into Chang Sha:
Level 20
Tactics: YanRe, ShuiXing, LiuMu, TongXian, CeJian, YiXin, ChaoMa, WeiTui, XueLu, YanDun
Arrays: SanKai, HeYi, BaiMa, HengFang
Troop Count:
Guan Ping-1588
Zhang Fei-1258
Guan Yu-970
Zhao Yun-1085
Zhuge Liang-915
Max TP-92
Most of my gear is iron. I have around 21000 gold, which I will probably use on steel gear and potions and revives.
Any idea what those arrays do? They could help me out some.
March 23, 2006 at 4:40 am #15073Lord Yuan Shu
KeymasterDepends, I hardly used them normally going through the game, but under the circumstances you’re putting yourself in…then yeah, they probably will help. I don’t remember offhand, but you can go to http://www.lordyuanshu.com/DoaE2.txt and Control F – Formations, and all of them should be there..

ParticipantFamous last words: "Liu Bei’s dogs will never seize Changsha!"
So Changsha has fallen to my blade. I was just going to do a test run, to see which array I wanted to work with. I make the line-up Zhang Fei, Guan Ping, Guan Yu, Zhao Yun, and Zhuge Liang as tactition. Upon entering battle, Zhang Fei and Guan Ping attack Huang Zhong, Guan Yu sets up BaiMa array, and Zhao Yun and Zhuge Liang YanRe Wei Yan. Huang Zhong tries to use JieCe a lot, but keeps failing. I think Wei Yan misses his first turn. I take the damage from the others. Second turn, the enemy assumes what I think was the YuLin array (middle three move up), which goes in my favor, as Han Xian and Yan Ling now do ~30 damage. I kill off Wei Yan with YanRe, then assualt Huang Zhong until he is no longer a threat. Before I kill him, I whittle down Han Hao’s health so he’ll be easier to kill. Once Huang Zhong dies, the formation breaks and I quickly attack Yan Ling before he does too much damage. I take out Han Hao and Yan Ling in the same turn, then all-out Han Xian. Zhang Fei goes down in the process, but the others manage to finish off Han Xian for the win.
So, wow. Quite lucky, I should think.
Lu Bu’s up again, but he’ll have to wait until tomorrow.
March 23, 2006 at 11:33 pm #15075Taishi Ci
ParticipantWith whimsical caprice, I smote Lu Bu and settled Southern Jing. He did a lot of damage, but his weakness to tactics and lack of great support spelled his doom.
Went back to Xinye, and recruited Chen Deng and the rest of the deadweight. The enemy troops have taken another jump in size, now even the outlaw armies are doing ~150 damage a hit.
Now in Fushui at level 22. I got Zhang Lu through the glitch and, although I won’t use him for Hanzhong, I’m contemplating using him for Wei and maybe Shu if the enemies are just too strong. I’ll just to wait and see how I hold up.
One final thing of interest: if you leave the game at the title screen, it will show pictures of the major characters and give a little description of each. In Xu Chu/Zhu’s description it mentions he was a protege of Guan Yu…I don’t remember hearing anything about this. Thoughts?
