ParticipantMy game is still at Xiahou Yuan at Hanzhong, at level 30. I was working on the DOAE3 walkthrough (at least the basic part of it) for a while. I need to come back and finish this sometime.
So you were trying a low level game too? How hard was Luo castle?

ParticipantI cant really remember what level i’m at that time, but all i can say is let them kill each other ^^. Burn (using da re?? i forgot is it this one or the better version?) cao cao to ashes with of cos zhuge liang and jiang wei, then follow up with xun yu.
All the time i was using feng jian formation which is good for me,ma chao at the centre is making large damage to them, and he dies alot too at the hands of xunyu and cao cao with fire of their own (becarful of an sha ~"~).
Most of the other time i was using "li jian" with zhao yun/guan xing on xu zhu/dian wei/pang de. But one think i dont know why is, xu zhu they all can only hit 5 to 20 soldier of cao cao only @@" after li jian. why is that so?

ParticipantI vaguely remembered that I used Li Fan on Xu Zhu or Dian Wei before. They kill very few Cao Cao’s soldiers. I guess the reason has to do with Li Jian and Li Fan. When we use it on the enemy, it does little damage. If the enemy does it to us, we are severely burned.
There could be history factors too. Xu Zhu and Dian Wei are two of Cao Cao’s most trusted generals, despite the fact that Dian Wei died very young. Even when we successfully use Li Fan or Li Jian, the bonds may remain. Just a guess, hehe.

ParticipantOh now now then i remember it ~"~, i really use "Li Jian" alot (becoz of low level). Every time i use Li Jian, only the commander get hit for 5 to 20 soldier by himself or by his general.
@ Samuel
I try Li Fan on Xu Zhu and Dian Wei,but were unsuccessful, and i end up lossing the battle as they can hit 2XXX soldier out of me (Ouch). That why i choose Jiang Wei and Zhao Yun for their speed, and Li Jian both the Wei general before they strike ^^.
But there is one thing i dont know is,how come the Feng Jian Formation only the top and bottom move first follow up by centre then 2nd and 4th position? Like say, Zhuge Liang who is my Strategist were at the bottom but even if his Agi is low it wil be his turn right after Jiang Wei who is my leader.Any one can confirm that?

ParticipantI will try the Feng Jian array when my troops learn it. Then, I can confirm it.
As a speculation, this is Feng Jian’s character. It may increase the speed of the wings (1st and 5th positions) although their attacking powers are next to none. In this array, you have to protect the man at the centre (3rd position). Once he dies, the array weakens and will easily collapse.

Participant[hmm…… what is the level when you complete the game then,Taishi Ci?
i manage to complete it at level 42 (i guess its too high ~"~),with
Zhuge liang(Strategist)
Jiang Wei (int 255,equip with treastise)
Zhao Yun
Ma Chao (weapon damage is 255,equip with gauntlet)
Guan Suo
formation used are FENG JIAN
i use jiangwei and zhugeliang to burn the wei alive, wahaha……its fun ^^
and i manage to burn simayi too until his die, yipee……^^
ok that all i say until now….
Anyone complete at lower level?]
I completed at level 41. I did use the duplicate item and the Zheng letter trick. I did not use the 64 item trick to recruit Cao Cao or Sima Yi. The best warrior that I "cheated" to get was Lu Bu. He was a great help along the way. He had the most soldiers in my group with 3800, followed by Ma Choa and Jain Wei in the final battle.
Final Formation:
Lu Bu
Lu Bu
Lu Bu
Ma Chao
Jain Wei
TOTAL EXP = 619073
I fought only 2 random battles for a total of 170 exp. I never learned or needed Ce Main.
Toughest battle by far was Cao Cao at Luo castle. With the formation that I used, focussing on Xun Yu alone was a must.
In the last 4 battles I was an sha’d only twice. Once by Zhang Lao and once by Sima Yi.
Thanks to Yuan Shu and Kong Ming for walkthroughs and all who contributed to the MB. I really enjoyed the game.

ParticipantI love the cutesy faces, but was is ~"~ supposed to be?
You have to remember, though; the very thing that makes you a nerd is that your enthusiasms are totally unrelatable and non-marketable to most of the world. For example, anime and celibacy. - Seanbaby

ParticipantI think it’s a shrug.
My file for this is still at Hanzhong when you fight Xiahou Yuan, although I got that far without any cheating.

ParticipantWell, more progress is being made. I just beat Xiahou Yuan, and boy it sure was tough (but I still swear that a few of the earliest battles were tougher). No cheating of any kind, which kills me since I normally enjoy abusing the item duplication feature (never did try the Zheng Letter or 64 item tricks). I was also at level 30 when facing his army. I forget who the strategist was, but he had 225 int. and was a real potential pain with his Ji Mians, An Shas and Hou Shens (at this point, a single Hou Shen can one-hit KO any party member, and even a multi-targeted one likely kills each person it hits, i.e. instant death to 3 or 4). What saved the day for me was using the Heng Fang tactic, which put the top and bottom guys in the back, with the middle three in the front. Ma Chao was top and Guan Xing was bottom, so they were mainly used for healing all the party, with Guan Xing occasionally busting out a Yan Re or Yi Xin to Xiahou Yuan (or once he was gone, to the next most powerful guy). In the middle, I had, in the following order, Mr. 255 Attack Power Zhang Fei, Wei Yan (his Tiger Ax was 150 atp when every other guy at that point only had a 120 ATP weapon). To be honest, the only reason I picked the order I did is that when I play DOAE or DOAE2 (or any RPG for that matter), I basically always order my guys from greatest max hp to least, top to bottom. Zhuge Liang was my strategist, nothing too surprising there I guess. I actually used 3 tactics potions since my guys were healing almost every round. Well, I just entered Wei and now I am up to the Cao cousins that precede the fight with Jiang Wei. While I don’t think it will be too terrible, I wonder if I am able to skip either of the two castle battles that I am to face before Jiang Wei. So far, I’ve fought no random battles, and I managed to only avoid two boss fights. The first is the one where Guan Yu gives the Hu Ban letter to avoid a fiery ambush, and the second was Ba Castle. I simply skipped over the castle and continued on to Ba Citadel. Then, once I conquered Chengdu for the right to rule Shu, I was able to visit the town, and, for the heck of it, pick up Yan Yan (just like it said in LYS’s guide). However, I do know of one opportunity to skip a battle that I just couldn’t take. It was at Yi Ling Castle- skipping the battle makes the following one only winnable with tactics, and my part was just too weak to do it, despite several tries. I mean, how can we win a battle with purely tactics with low tp, no tactics potions available yet, and the weakest tactics in the game? And let’s not forget there’s now a 4th warlord being there for having not beaten him back in Yi Ling Castle! Regardless, I doubt it will change the overall level, though winning it sure would have been nice. Well, I’ve rambled enough here, but boy am I pumped to win this.
P.S. Since many battles were so long and frustrating, coupled with the general slow pace of the game, I actually used my emulator’s fast-forward/throttle feature (TAB button for VirtuaNES) for most of the game. It will save your sanity in dungeon areas and really hard boss battles! Oh, and remember to use save states often (but never in battles- that would be cheating!).

ParticipantGood job on this! I only made it up to fighting Xiahou Yuan at Hanzhong, but that file was on my other computer and is now gone…
Looking forward to the details.

ParticipantI just sent a video to the Lord man of me beating the final two battles, and I think he found it amusing that I used the crossbow as a large part of my strategy (hey, when it finally the lonesome hit Si Ma Yi with my 255 treatised Jiang Wei, it took off over 4,000 men for the kill!). However, I also promised I’d do it soon without the crossbow (time to go tactics potion shopping- good thing I was so fiscally conservative throughout my journey). I still swear that others can do this too- a little patience, a little luck, and you’re BALLIN’. Pics soon to come!
