Participantjust wanted to give a little input:
i started this mod last week and i must say that what i really really love about this mod is that everytime u enter a new chapter, it is always in your best interest to recruit the top generals of that area. my biggest complaint about alot of the other mods was that there were so many useless generals, either because of their poor soldier count or just because you were forced to use a very select few generals because the difficult was raised so much that it was necessary lol. all in all, great mod! u can see the passion that was put into this

ModeratorQuote:i must say that what i really really love about this mod is that everytime u enter a new chapter, it is always in your best interest to recruit the top generals of that area.Yes I had said something similar:
Quote:One thing you've done that I haven't seen in any other mods is that every general you get is actually usable, at least for a time. In the first 2-3 chapters you get so many generals it's hard to find a way to use them, even in the original DoaE.I guess when you have Yuan Shu he didn't have a lot of great officers so in a mod you can rely on recruiting generals more which is pretty fun. I liked that about the Yuan Shu mod as well.

KeymasterQuote:i must say that what i really really love about this mod is that everytime u enter a new chapter, it is always in your best interest to recruit the top generals of that area. Thanks bro, that's something I tried to focus on hard. Just required a lot of play throughs and me playing it like I would any other mod, and trying to make every character relevant (if even for a few battles, for some of the weaker ones). Ultimately done with the idea to give people more options for party structure. This is where fixed soldier counts come into play; I always try to get the weaker statistical characters (in STR / INT / AGI) some soldier-count love so they can be a factor.

Moderator*Trying this mod out again… Song Yong, heh. This mod is a little bit less oppressive than than the Dong Zhuo mod.
*Wish they didn’t have red faces!
*Took a whole lot of resurrects, I didn’t even bother healing because Chi Xin is so weak, but I beat Zhang Jiao and his crew around level 8.
*I skipped recruiting Yuan Shu… should this be possible in the Yuan Shu Mod :P
*Liu Bei failed to send reinforcements to Fan Shui Guan?
*Recruiting people by giving them powder, heh heh, cool. What you should do is replace the ability to recruit any officer with cash/auto join with the “only join via steed” event. Check the Romhacking guide on how to do that.
*One thing I like about this mod is you’re wandering around with a bunch of nobodies. I don’t even know the names of half these guys in my party.
*Not having Agility viewable is a major downer…
*Really need to replace the Chi Xin tactic sooner. It’s worthless when your guys have 400+ troops and you can only heal 30 at a time. Just let them die and resurrect for 400 hp
*Huo Hu definitely has the best powder… How about instead of “Power Pil” you make it “Powda Pil”
*Jia Xu…is pink!
*Xu Rong and Dong Min have 100 AP? That’s more than Lu Bu! In fact, Li Jue is packing more heat than Lu Bu…
:thumright:
*When you say “no” to Lu Bu’s request, it doesn’t have a [>] for there to be a pause, lol, the same thing when he finishes the line “beg for his life.”, no pause.
*”intend to stop your rise to Emperor” to the position of Emperor is what you meant?
*Level 12, and still have Chi Xin. Guys w/ 600+ troops now and just using Resurrects, no healing.
*Game gets a lot easier once you can actually buy decent equipment in Chang An. If I didn’t know where the ‘hidden weapons’ were, I would say getting past Chang An is almost impossible. Maybe offer Clubs for sale in Lu Yang at a cost of $1000?
*Jian Yong, Wang Fu, and Shang Long have more AP and are more dangerous than Zhang Fei or Guan Yu…
*Did some cheater leveling South of Chang An… :P
* Liu Bei must have some unresolved issues if he is kidnapping all of the young boys…
*Lu Bu is obsolete long before you get to Nan Yang. No strong weapons, I have other guys with 800+ troops, and his low INT makes him a liability. Deeped 6’d him in the party backlines until he will probably betray me. Recruited all of Liu Bei’s lackeys and ditched all the Yuan generals.
*Somehow I’m missing Ji Ling through all of this??
*Got 16,000 cash when I reached Nan Yang from all the grinding.
*Ju Shou wasn’t as terrible as he thought he was, I Yam Re’d his face into the ground!
*Liu Ye has got some freaky eyes… but once I recruited Ju Shou, Liu Ye was just another body.
*Once I got Ji Rou the game got super easy…
*Mountains are cool and everthing, but how about making them look more like a natural barrier rather than a straight strip of mountain which is kind of… lame. These are found in a lot of areas like Ji Zhou, Changsha, Zhong Yuan, etc.
*Ji Rou…. All out… heal… All out… heal… All out
*Not having Yuan Shu soaking up an officer space is letting me deck out my party with 1000+ officers prematurely :D
*Every chapter I seem to be fighting Zhang Fei…
*Zhou Yu + 2 other guys with Hong Shui + Ji Rou caster= impossible battle to win without savestate hacking. Change this battle.
*Chang Sha… Hua Xin with 170 AP!!? wth… Sun Ce only has 120!!
*Once you get bow/swords Jing Zhou fails…
*Zhou Yu got stupider with tactics at Ling Ling. He lost Hong Shui!
*Now I have to go to the reserves to get Liu Ye back to get rid of him…
*and now its Destiny of Yuan Shao! Still no Yuan Shu in my party of Yuan Shao, Hua Xin, Ji Ling, Zhang Xun, and Wen Hun + Yuan Yin pack mule and Ju Shou strategist.
*Game is picking up because now its *FINALLY* different from the original DOAE in terms of story, first two chapters vs turbans and Dong Zhuo were pretty boring.
*Liu Xun and Yang Hong only get in the party because of their doube troop count over others.
*Huo Hu has gotta sell at Hu Lao Guan, ROFL, best line of the game.
*Zhang Lu battle was a battle of attrition… once Ji Rou is lost things got harder.
*Chen Gong became my TP bank once I hit Shu and Huo Hu became my hitman w/ Ansha
*Yuan Yin (has always been) and Zhang Xun are wastes of space at this point.
*Hit Chengdu w/ 120,000 cash after buying equips. Maybe up the price of items at this point?
*Cao Cao and his wife Liu Bei, lol??? (guys leaving speech), finally got rid of Zhang Xun and Yuan Yin
*Wasn’t Sun Ce of killed at Ling Ling? and how can Shu attack if the Yuan’s own Shu?
*Zhao and Huang fell beneath my Huo Hu Ansha…Sun Quan and Cao Cao MUST PAY!
*Gonna take a break before invading Wu…January 12, 2014 at 11:18 am #52872sonic.penguin
Moderator*Through Wu, some MAJOR imbalance here which leads to savestate hacking…
*Too many officers have 200 AC which makes them impossible to kill conventionally. Strong warriors are useless until you get Nu Long/Qing Long
*Zhu Rong has a beard!
*Hit a gate in Wei…. quote says “there’s no one here” then I get attacked lol
*I’m fighting Wei guys at gates and Shu guys in the field. Wierd…
*A lot of the portraits would be better if you just left them white background instead of red/gray/blue eyes.
*The age of this version shows. Every battle is just a battle of attrition and luck. Ansha your way to victory or hope they don’t use Wan Fu with Bei Ji strategy…
*Liu Bei battle, they just Ji Mian + Ce Mian me and it’s impossible to win…January 12, 2014 at 12:18 pm #52873sonic.penguin
ModeratorVictory via savestate/Ansha hacking!
*Okay, so some final notes about this rom, it’s age is definately prevalent because the only “current” updates to it are the new sprites/portraits which could use some work. I personally don’t feel sacrificing portrait “normalness” just have colors is worth it. One afternoon and you can recolor the DOAE2 portraits to make them normal.
*The luck attrition victory/Ansha hacking was about the only way to beat this mod as the officers were WAY overpowered. The final battle the enemy has Ji Mian, Ce Mian, and Guard, all which are cancelable with newer updates so as to not create such an imbalance where strategy and fun are thrown out the window in liue of button mashing until you get a favorable outcome.
*I felt the writing got lazy towards the end of the game. It was obvious time was spent around chapter 3/4/5, but after that it felt like stock DOAE with a few different gate battles. It seemed that everytime I killed a major boss they would either drop the F-bomb or use the original DOAE responses with a word or two changed. I think with some polish this mod could really shine. Glad I played through it and finished it to the end. It was definitely a lot easier than the Dong Zhuo mod which is literally impossible even with savestate hacking. Decent job for an older mod Lord Yuan Shu!

KeymasterThanks for your review and honesty :) There is definitely a lot to fix, that’s why I haven’t really gotten going on it. Plus when I have had time it’s been for the Dong Zhuo mod. I basically have to start this thing from scratch and use some of the ideas.
I know you can skip Yuan Shu, but why would you? He’s 200-200-200. Good versatility. In theory, it’d make sense to find him a spot where he’s recruitable and you can’t get around it.
I make weak guys have higher AP so they can still be formidable enemies. But you’re right in the sense that I should still make it so Jian Yong isn’t taking off as much as Zhang Fei.
The very last battle is super tough, I agree. Basically have to Bei Ji your toughest fighters, get Ce Mian up and continue to keep it up, and have your tough guys full of powder pills.
When I go through it again, I’ll make it more historical. It’s really all over and some of the Liu Bei stuff adds to the humor but it doesn’t make a whole lot of sense.
I do agree the best stuff is the Huo Hu dealing references :huohu: Doesn’t Liu Ye say that when he leaves at Gui Yang, to get a hold of Huo Hu who has been busy selling powder at Hu Lao Guan lol?
But yea, the mod is definitely green compared to what we have now. It’s one of the more complete “older-type” mods but I’m pretty sure I made the bulk of the final version of it in like 2010.
It was definitely a lot easier than the Dong Zhuo mod which is literally impossible even with savestate hacking
You’re wrong – just get better :huohu: Build up levels by the castle, buy new gear, you’ll be fine. Run from Bian Zhang if you come across him in the fields, he’s the only formidable officer you’ll find.

I ran into him 4 times in a row and got smashed every time… I just gave up on it after that when I was broke and starving.

Yeah, I just wanted to see how messed up the game would be not recruiting him. I know in the Cao Cao mod, last time I put my balls to the walls for an impossible game, I remember Cao Pi being the Liu Feng replacement but totally skippable. In the Flames of Wu mod this was a concern… how to recruit Sun Quan but still start off as Sun Ce/Sun Jian…. SO I made him the 7th person that HAD to be recruited because you HAD to buy a gullwing, so you HAD to recruit him in front of the shop to get out of Changsha area and made him non-removable from the party… voila, an integral story person added, albeit rather differently, but still effectively.

Yeah, this actually is what I hated about the original. I loved playing the game all the way through up to the late Wei/Jin areas because it was just a matter of starving officers, huge travels to fight one gate battle, only to have to gullwing back to town to rest, then do it again, then randomly have some guy like Xun Huo spank your party, then do it again, then get attritioned by Sima Yi when he was the last guy standing, then run out of TP because Ce Mian failed always after 1 turn… I like more strategy now…
Think of it like this, when you playtest it, if you find yourself save state resetting more than once or at a MAX twice ONLY because of a total party wipe-out, your battle is too hard and some mechanic needs to be addressed whether enemy attack or defense.

It is absurd being able to skip those guys. Just one of those things where back then it was harder for us to fit these guys in. Now we have more creative ways to get them in the group, so to speak.

True. Especially the first few times with DoaE, it was hard to figure out how the hell to defeat Sima Yi without him reviving himself. If he does Wan Fu twice (sometimes even once) you aren’t going to have the TP to finish him off.
Play-testing is definitely vital when creating the mods. The tricky part though is it being our own mods, we know all the tricks of the trade and naturally it’s going to be a bit harder for the others going through the mod without having inside knowledge of it.

ModeratorLooks like you have your work cut out for you in the next few days then. First Flames of Wu, then Rise of Ieyasu 2.0, then Rise of Lu Bu 3.0 to fill me in on balancing issues I may have missed XD
