ParticipantChapter 1 – From Baron to Mist
The game begins on the ships of Baron. Cecil’s crew talk about how they are under orders to steal the crystal from Mysidia. They take the crystal without much of a fight, and then Cecil defends the King’s orders. Monsters appear, and Cecil destroys them all *3 floating eyes, he uses a flare-like item, then a Roc appears, and Cecil uses a lightning item* (you can’t control him yet). They arrive and land at Baron. Baigan meets Cecil at the gates, and leads him to King Baron.
During his meeting with the King, Cecil questions King Baron’s motives. The king takes this as distrust, and dismisses Cecil from the Red Wings! He assigns him to eliminate the Phantom Beasts in the Mist Valley. Kain comes in and defends Cecil, but to no avail. The king orders him to go with Cecil. He gives them the Bomb Ring, and sends them on their way. Kain apologies profusely, but Cecil refuses to hear it (sort of). Go down into the 1st floor, go to the right, and press the button on that wall. Grab the treasure (480 gil, an Ether, and a Tent) Go to the left and go through the passages until Rosa stops you. She says she’ll come to your room tonight. Keep going until Cid stops you. He talks about how Rosa’s been worried. He also says that he’s concerned about the King, as he’s asked him to build new airships.
Go up to your room. Cecil will have a bit of a monologue with himself about King Baron’s changing ways. Rosa comes in soon after, and Cecil begins to doubt himself. Rosa worries about Cecil and makes it known to him. Cecil continues to doubt himself. Morning then comes, and Cecil meets Kain on the 1st floor. They head out of the castle. If you have an emulator that can speed things up, now might be a good time to use that speedup. You won’t miss anything important.
Go into town and pick up some items in some pots, then head out and build a level or two. This could take awhile, but with the enemies so weak, you don’t need to utilize Kain’s jump command yet. Get a feel for the battles, then when you’re confident enough to do so, head northwest to the Mist cave. Remember, in the hardtype, Cecil can use the Dark Wave command. This causes damage to every enemy, but I feel that it’s useless since it causes so little damage. I suggest building both Cecil and Kain to Level 11 or 12 before going into the Mist Cave. If you go into the Inn in Baron, you’ll find some treasure by clicking the swords in the upper right corner. When you’re ready, go back out and go a bit west until you find a circle-shaped forest area. Those are where Chocobos hang out. Catch a yellow one and go to the Mist cave (you don’t fight monsters while on a Chocobo). Dismount the Chocobo, it’ll run back to its forest. Then go into the cave.
In the Mist Cave, follow the path until you get a dialog telling you to Turn Back. Cecil asks who is there, but gets no response. Grab the nearby treasure chest for a potion, then go east until you reach another ladder. Go up that ladder and go east again for an eye drop. Keep going south down the path that leads to another chest. Open it for a tent. Go back and go East until you find another treasure chest. Grab what’s inside that one, and go north. A dialog appears, saying "Leave Now". Kain asks if it’s a Phantom Beast. Go up some more. That same voice says that you’re from Baron, Kain wonders who’s there. You end up with a decision to make. It asks if you insist on proceeding. If you’re not at full HP, say no and use some potions. If you don’t wanna use potions, then go ahead and say yes. A battle will ensue.
Mist Dragon
HP: 465
My Levels: Cecil 11, Kain 11
Difficulty (scale of 1-10): 1
Steal: Nothing
Weakness: Nothing
Attack while the Dragon is in dragon form, using Kain’s jump command. Attack with Cecil (Magus in the picture shown). If you’re wounded, take the time to heal while it is in MIST form. Do NOT attack it, otherwise you’ll get hit with a blizzard, causing some pretty good damage.
After defeating it, you get 200 gil and 350 EXP. Leave the cave and go into the Village of Mist. You will lose Kain after this, so unequip him so that you have stuff to sell. Your bomb ring will go off, and set the Village on fire! This was a trap by the King to eliminate this village. You see a girl crying for her mommy. By killing the Mist Dragon, you killed this girl’s mother (for shame, player!). Cecil refuses to believe it. Kain says that the King sent you to eliminate the summoners, and that they have no choice to kill the girl. Cecil refuses to kill her, and renounces all loyalty to Baron. Kain does the same, but not necessarily for you. Cecil then suggests that they take the girl to safety. She refuses to go with them, and a battle ensues.
Girl
HP: N/A
My Levels: Cecil 11, Kain 11
Difficulty (scale of 1-10): N/A
Steal: Nothing
Weakness: Nothing
Just defend. Surely you don’t want to hurt an innocent little girl! She summons Titan, who uses an Earthquake. It does around 100 + damage, nothing deadly, but it ends the battle. You end up down on the ground with the Girl, but Kain is nowhere to be found. Cecil hopes that Kain is alive somewhere, takes the girl, and leaves. You are now near the village of Mist, with full HP, but alone. Go north into the Desert until you reach a town.

You have to remember, though; the very thing that makes you a nerd is that your enthusiasms are totally unrelatable and non-marketable to most of the world. For example, anime and celibacy. - Seanbaby

ParticipantChapter 2 – Alone in the Desert
Don’t go into Kaipo yet. You should go into the cave north of Kaipo. Build some levels until you’re say…level 12 or 13. I personally level up to 15. Now you go to Kaipo. You run to the inn, and get the girl to bed. She refuses to talk. Moments later, guards from Baron come in. Cecil refuses to give them the girl, and a battle ensues.
General
Soldier (3)
HP: 221 (General), 27 (Soldiers)
My Levels: Cecil 15
Difficulty: 1.5
Steal: Nothing
Weakness: Nothing
Take out the General first. Then mop up the soldiers to get max EXP from this battle.
After you win, the girl finally talks. Her name is Rydia, and she’ll join. Now you can go around Kaipo into the shops. One townsperson suggests you put Rydia in the back row. Do that, because if she dies, she ain’t getting EXP. Skip the armory, as Rydia’s armor is the best as it can get right now. Do go to the Weapon Shop and get Rydia a staff (attack goes up 1), a bow, and if you can afford it, 90 iron arrows. Equip the bow in her LEFT hand, and the arrows in her right hand, it bumps her attack power to 10. Now go into the house on the upper right. You’ll find a familiar face there. It’s Rosa. She’s got desert fever, and to cure it, you need the "Light of the Desert", a gem found in the Antlion’s lair. We won’t be there for awhile though, so you should reluctantly leave Rosa’s side for now.
Go outside of Kaipo and level up. Get Rydia up to around level 7 or 8. I personally would get her up to 10 just to be safe. Now we’ll be going back to the Underground Channel. Go along the path west until you get to a bridge with an old man on it. That old man is the great sage Tella. He joins. He is rather strong magic user at level 20. He gets even stronger, but that comes later in the game. He knows Cure 2, which is a huge plus at this point. Keep defeating the monsters and grabbing the treasure you see until you get to a safe point. This is one of the many save points you can find in caverns. You’ll rest in Tella’s tent, and Cecil and Tella will talk. Rydia has long since fallen asleep. Cecil tells Tella that she is a caller from Mist. Tella also tells you about his daugher, Anna. Now’s a good time to save your game, so do it…or you might regret it later!
Continue through the 2nd Basement floor. You’ll find an Ice Rod that you should give to Tella now. Go through the passage into Basement Floor 3. Go west into the doors. You’ll be in another passageway. Go west until your character disappears. Then go north and east until your character comes back into view. Grab the treasure (a hidden passage for a lousy potion, what a ripoff!), and go into the passageway. Keep running from the new monsters (Gigatoad and Organitoad). Grab the treasures on both sides, the treasures include a new sword for Cecil. Equip that on him IMMEDIATELY. His attack power goes up by 10. Leave the cave, and just before entering the next one, use a tent and save. You’ll thank me later.
Now enter that cave, once you fall down the waterfall, you can’t turn back. Hold your breath and jump in. You’ll land in the water at the bottom. Get out of the water, and grab the 2 treasures. These are armor upgrades for Cecil. In the next part of the cave, you’ll get Hermes Shoes (item to make you faster in battle), and the Hades armor, another upgrade for Cecil. Go to the tentacles, and you’ll begin a fight with Octomammoth.
Octomammoth
HP: 2,350
My Levels: Cecil 16, Rydia 9, Tella 20
Difficulty: 2 (3 if you’re not careful)
Steal: Nothing
Weakness: Darkness, Lightning
Octomammoth is weak against lightning, so have Rydia and Tella use Bolt while Cecil attacks with his dark sword (he’ll do very good damage). As you hurt him, he’ll lose his tentacles. After that, he won’t attack as much, and you’ll have smooth sailing. After defeating Octomammoth, go north and leave via the waterfall. Before you go into Damcyan, you should unequip Tella’s stuff. You’ll see why. After the Red Wings bomb the castle, go in. When you go into Damcyan, go down one space, then head northeast until you reach a door. Go in, talk to the downed soldier. He’ll die, and tell you to take the treasures. Do so. Then go into the basement and take those treasures too. When you go to the 3rd floor, you find a girl laying on the ground, dying. It’s Tella’s daughter, Anna! Tella thinks the Bard killed her. A battle ensues, just sit back. You can’t do anything. Then again, neither can Tella, as his fists won’t put a dent in the bard. Then you hear the greatest line in the game.
SHUT UP! YOU SPOONY BARD! :D
Greatness. Anyway, the Bard keeps trying to explain, and Tella just keeps hitting him. Then, Anna pleads with them to stop. Anna says that the bard is Gilbert, prince of Damcyan. Gilbert then explains that Golbeze is controlling the Red Wings. The Red Wings pillaged the castle to steal the crystal, and Anna shielded Gilbert from the arrows (what a coward). Anna professes her love for Gilbert, then dies. Tella asks about Golbeze, and Gilbert says that he took over the Red Wings. Gilbert begins to cry. Tella leaves to go avenge Anna’s death. Cecil tries to talk him out of it, but to no avail. Tella shoves Cecil out of the way and leaves the party…hmm, such strength for an old man to push a knight aside. Gilbert continues to cry, and Rydia calls him a crybaby. She yells at Gilbert, saying that he should act like a grown-up, and that he isn’t the only one to have lost a loved one. Gilbert then says he’s a weakling and will stay with Anna forever. Cecil slaps him, and tells him that he ain’t the only sad one around here, and asks if staying around here and crying like a baby would make Anna happy. Cecil then asks for Gilbert’s help in getting the Light of the Desert for Rosa. Gilbert agrees, and not only does Gilbert join, but you get the Hovercraft, which can cross shallow water. You can go back to Kaipo to heal, which I recommend highly. It might also be a good idea to level Gilbert up around Kaipo, even though in my view, he’s a useless character.
To be continued…

KeymasterSage Tellah is the best. What the hell is with this Gilbert stuff? Is this the translation of the Japanese version (where Dark Knight Cecil has that other attack)?

ParticipantYeah, the names are different in the original.
Incidentally, what was Tellah’s Spoony Bard line in the original Japanese? I’m pretty sure Spoony Bard is a Ted Woolsey original.
