Rainbow pudding is nothing compared to the tails…
Drop rate for Rainbow Pudding is .04%/pudding monster.
(.08% with the special augment you get before Zeromus).
Puddings are easy to find…
Dragons and such, well, are not…
Need to use alarms constantly, they die slower, and there’s only one or two per fight. The exception is the Flan Princess, but in the new version they can be really damn crotchety. And there are only three now.

When it comes down to it, getting rare items in the DS version might be easier than it ever was in the previous versions. The drop rate has always been .04% but this is the first time that there’s been a way to improve your chances. It is sort of counter-acted by the monsters’ ability to smack you around pretty good even when you’re level 99, though.
99 in the SNES version means you are a god.
Getting the Pink Tail and goodies like Glass Helmets was always a nightmare…
August 31, 2008 at 5:26 pm #34379thechieftainParticipantYeah I didn’t really have to grind too much I feel to even get to 99 in the DS version, but I never had the time to get there in the original.
August 31, 2008 at 6:39 pm #34380Perhong_AngtongParticipantAlso, don’t forget the Crystal RING, arguably the best accessory from the original. And it was so damn rare, but the good news is: I once got lucky in the original, and got one on my way to Zemus. Obviously, I went back to a save point after that.
As for the DS version, I’m on my second playthrough with Cecil, Rydia and Tellah trying to get oCockatrice and oGoblin. So far, no luck. Good news is: My characters are now lv 20!

There is also Bomb and Mage. :)
Where does the ‘o’ come from?
September 2, 2008 at 3:55 pm #34384Perhong_AngtongParticipantJust an habit I got from the original version, you know, the kind of orbs next to magic names?

Ah. It is the symbol that represents summon magic. :)
I figured that was probably what inspired it.
October 31, 2009 at 4:15 am #34386Lord Yuan ShuKeymasterStarted up a fresh quest, this time paying more attention to the augment abilities. Didn't have Fast Talk for Rydia the first time through the game. I can already see this is going to be a difference-maker in terms of the time saved to cast spells in the tougher battles later on. Also didn't realize how much ass Cry kicks when given to Kain. All that said the game just seems so weird once you get the Draw Attacks Augment to pair with Counter for Cecil. The in-battle strategy just changes completely, with your party having so much control.
Just getting Edge at Eblan Cave right now. Juggling this second play-through along with finishing up Dragon Quest V (which is one of the best games I've played in a long time, definitely my style) and starting up Nostalgia, which I'm unsure about at the moment.

BTW, where did you get the 2-D version?
November 8, 2009 at 1:27 am #34388Lord Yuan ShuKeymasterYea, the game is pretty hard at times. Especially early on, the game has been hard for me the first time through (btw, this is FFIV DS I'm talking about – the earlier FFIV versions / FFII are easy enough..)
I've owned the 2D version for some time. Played it through when it was first out in like 1992 but I didn't buy it until the late 90's, basically towards the end of when they were selling the cartridges new (still very expensive).
Do you play the DS version Link? Or SNES?
