ModeratorSsshhh, last time you said you loved them! There’s also the fact that restoring them kills off a good nine or ten unique portraits to make room. We shouldn’t see [Censored by the FBI] or [Censored by the CIA] or even the great [censored by the CIA *AND* the FBI] stuck with a generic face!
And we still have one traditional "generic" portrait <_<
I will look at it when I can to see if I typoed in the stats as Zhang Xiu should be noticably closer to 160 Str. than 60.
There’s a page on kongming.net which gives all the data on where to change battles… hold on… http://kongming.net/doae/rom_hacking/battles/
You should know that DoaTEd lets you change *all* dialogue text! I just write down what they say in vanilla DoaE, then pop up DoaTEd and search for the text (which I replace with the appropriate taunt, boast, whine, MP reference, or whatever)
It’s not intended to be a challenge game (although if I don’t feel like stabbing my eyes out when I finish I could always make a version that’s "hard", "very hard", or even "Poland 1939" XD), so seeing that it’s on par with standard DoaE is good.
On a side note, I’m trying to make all or nearly all the autojoiners have some redeeming factor, whether it’s high Str, high Int, high soldiers, or even a good mix of two or three of those.
…Out of curiosity, does anyone know where they store the Int requirements for the various tactics? I’m trying to prevent a repeat of the Fu Bing Predicament…
That bonus is the first bundle that gets handed out as a reward for beating part of the game! As the readme shows, they hand out the password in-game at a certain part.
And as for Jin Xuan’s given name, I think it’s pronounced "shwahn", but I don’t speak chinese…

But the problem is the generic taunts "Prepare to die!" are used more than once. So if you changed it to something unique for Xu Rong’s "Prepare to die!" it would be used everywhere. Maybe you knew that already but that’s why I never changed the generic ones – the only way I’d do it is if you could edit the generic taunt for just one battle because it wouldn’t make sense used for all the gate battles that start off with "prepare to die!"
Zhang Xiu is probably supposed to be 160 instead of 60. Because when Zhang Xiu joins, it’s 160 STR.
I’ll have to look into the hex stuff for changing the officers around. Nice work on that page James, it’s informative. That will open things up even more.
I wonder though, let’s say you add a 4th officer to a gate battle that only had 3 officers. Would that 4th officer automatically be recruitable? I mean, assuming you gave them an area to show up in random battles. Cause some generals like Yuan Yin, Jia Xu, etc can be fought in random battles but never recruitable.

Exactly. That’s the key to the supporting characters who join. Generally for me I make them weaker than the base party that I’m using, but give them higher soldier count to make them useful for a time.

ModeratorReally? I thought each taunt appeared only once… hmm, that may be a problem later on…
I don’t see the foruth general in a gate being any different than the first three.
And fear not; I shall deal with Yuan Yin and Jia Xu once I get to their locations. Right now, anything after Dogn Zhuo is defintiely still uinder construction.

KeymasterYes, each taunt is used multiple times. Well, the generic ones at least. Hua Xiong, Lu Bu, Dong Zhuo, these three have unique gate text. But the gate before Chang An and the two gates before Luo Yang are generic.
I think you misunderstood me regarding Yuan Yin / Jia Xu and the 4th officer in a 3 officer gate battle. I meant certain characters do not join you even after you defeat them in a gate / castle battle (like Jia Xu after Chang An, and Yuan Yin after Nan Yang). So I was wondering if you added an officer to a battle, if that character can be recruited or not? I’m assuming in most cases that they are recruitable since only a few generals cannot be recruited in random battles. But, it doesn’t matter really, I’ll find out eventually…

ModeratorHmm… do we have a list of which taunts appear where?
And, IIRC, everyone who appears in a fixed battle can then be recruited in a random battle. I’m no programmer, however, so it’s up to those more knowledgeable than I to list exceptions (aside from Lu Bu and Pang Tong).

KeymasterYea, that’s what I was telling you about the guys you fight in gate battles / castles. Not ALL of them are recruitable, about 90% of them are but certain enemies are not – Yuan Yin, Jia Xu, Yuan Tan, Yuan Xi, Jin Xuan, Han Xuan, Xing Dao Rong, Liu Yang, Liu Du, Sun Yu, Sun Yi, Sun Huan, Wei Xu, Cheng Yu, Yu Jin, Xu Zhu, and I think that is it. Notice that most of them are either family related (Yuan’s, Sun’s), last battle of the area (Yuan Yin, Jia Xu), last battle of the game (Wei Xu, Yu Jin, Cheng Yu, Xu Zhu), and then there are the Jingzhou freaks (Jin Xuan, Han Xuan, Xing Dao Rong, Liu Du and Liu Yang). Those officers are not recruitable, and this stands of course if you change their names.
And my question was if the added characters to any given gate battle / castle battle have the same problem, or are they recruitable like most of the other warlords.
As for the taunts, sadly I probably have most of them memorized from playing this game 10 billion times, but I’m not sure if I want to go through and document them all. Like I said though, they’re each used 5+ times so if you change the generic taunts it’ll get fucked up.

ModeratorThe way I see things, it’s this:
(1) Rulers of a force (even puny forces like Han Xuan)
(2) Relatives of a ruler of a force (Cao Cao’s relatives excepted)
(3) Officers in the final battle
(4) Lu Bu
(5) The oddballs: Ma Yuanyi, Jia Xu, Zhang He, Xingdao Rong, Lu Meng, Yan Jun, Chen Jiao, Guo Jia, Song Xian, Wang Lang, Xu Huang, and Yu Jin.
Note that all (or virtually all) of the oddballs will be recruitable in the Jin Xuan Mod.
…is there a way to assign new taunts to indiivdual batles? IIRC, DoaTED showed plenty of blank lines…

ModeratorApparently it takes time for posts to show up, hence the acciedental triple-posting; sorry guys.

ModeratorNo really, it does. So I had to excise two of the three. Blargh.

ModeratorIt pains me to write this, but the Jin Xuan mod is on indefinite hold. :tear:
I have other projects eating my time up (ones that'll actually be finished, mind you!), plus even if I tried to soldier on with the jin xuan mod, you guys would come out with 25425273652873562 new enhancements before I finish it.
But hey, anyone who enjoys DoaE will enjoy the other projects, one of which is co-designed by the guy behind the fangame Mega Man Revolution.
…Also LYS *REALLY* needs to take a look at the forum, as it's refusing posts of mind with a link in them, yet happily accepting posts form obvious spammers. By viewing this post LYS is obligated to confirm that he has seen it.

ModeratorI don't like closing the jin xuan mod either, but keep in mind that I suck at programming. So these were the possibilities:
(1) I continue working on it until it's done, missing out on at least six months' worth new improvements and releasing a game that's only ordinary, not awesome.
(2) I teach myself to program well, pushing the release date back by at least three years.
(3) I yell at all of you until every single one of you swears under oath to never make another DoaE improvement, thereby killing off a vibrant modding community.
(4) I get someone to help out, delaying not only DoaE but the other guy(s)' own projects.
(5) I cut my losses and refocus on something awesome.
Keep in mind that the Jin Xuan mod isn't permadead like xenosaga 4-6, nor is it vaporware; it's merely on hold until something useful (like me learning to program better) occurs.

Quote:) I continue working on it until it's done, missing out on at least six months' worth new improvements and releasing a game that's only ordinary, not awesome.Rise of Lu Bu was like that, but as you can see if you've been around here, I've released version 2.0 and now 3.0. Just improve as you go and heck, things are A LOT easier now than they were 2 years ago thanks to the Rom Hacking Guide!
