ModeratorAnd to think they could've just imported his DoaE2 pic…

Moderatorheh, yeah, but the ability to import pictures was so much more difficult w/ Tile Layer Pro. Using feidian I'm finding is much easier

ParticipantSigh, so it seems sonic is nearly finished with his mod… i am a long ways off on mine, due to not being nearly as capable…
you guys must have backgrounds in this type of thing… I mean, you describe things in the guide, but it all seems so foreign to me, even with it all being layed out…

ModeratorHeh, I wish, I'm stalled @ Chapter 4/5 atm b/c I'm enjoying working on portraits so much. I wish I had a background in this stuff and could write code like midknight or atma, but meh, that's alright. I did have some schooling in GFX design, but not the technical stuff that I'm learning now. I had problems getting the portrait importing to work until MidKnighT just sent me a zipped folder w/ everything installed already!
Think of it like this, my first mod, Rise of Lu Bu, took 4 months to make working at it around 8hrs. a day. It takes time and experimentation, but you'll get the hang of it. Once I understood how to count hex 0-9 and A-F, it got a lot easier.
What hex editor do you use cabalpapa and what have you got for your mod so far? Is it ready for a beta yet?

ParticipantI am using XVI 32. As for beta testing, no, not even close, really. While it seems you work on yours chapter by chapter, my brain works in a bit of a different approach. I had all the generals worked out at first (since then, changes in storyline have changed prompting the need for changes), and then I have been completely revamping the map of the game. After that, it will likely be text, and then I will be left with portraits and sprites, along with some minor item and tactics changes that I would like to make. That means that by the time any testing would be ready, the game would be essentially complete. If people have other files or aids to help with portraits and sprites that I could use and figure out, that would be awesome, too!

ModeratorSounds like you do the whole thing one at a time, thats cool. I tend to spend a lot of time perfecting each chapter before moving onto the next. Generals, portraits, sprites, colors, weapons, etc all need to line up… granted by the time I get to the end I wind up re-adjusting it all anyways, but thats what good feedback is for, even if people say they hate it… ie: one-hit Lu Bu kills that people here will never let me live down

ModeratorThe one that doesn't enable ugly image processing XD
Seriously, though, use the white palette and (if you feel it necessary) make his armor red. Flesh-colored beards just don't work.

Moderatordouble posted, grrr!

ModeratorIts kind of tough for the senior citizens who have those white beards and eyebrows to add color, but I thought I'd give it a shot anyways. Too many officers have red armor, which is why I tried to stray away from it on a lot of the ones I'm drawing up. I was kind of thinking the same thing though about the beard, but maybe make his cap the red/black mixture to make it brown instead of black…
Huang Zhong is still one of the better stock photos in the game though.

except doae2 he looked like a cranky old man

I'd really like to get that Huang Zhong sprite though!

On another note, MiDKnighT if you can extract all of the DOAE2 sprites for me and/or give me the addresses to extract them myself, or if they're already all extracted and in the PHP file, I'd need to know the names. I might wind up having to redo all the ones you did simply b/c it would almost take longer to cross compare the ones you did and didn't do X_x.
Anyways, it doesnt look too hard to do, just a simple copy, paste and horizontal flips.

ModeratorSonic – here's what I had:
Download Sprites.zip from https://www.box.com/s/afa8679b0c56800fa0fd
newsprites1.bmp is the sprites I made from DoaE2 that we are using now (ROM page 1C)
newsprites2.bmp was going to go into a new bank but didn't get very far with that one (ROM page 1D).
The other bmp's are extracted from DOAE2 I think but you may want to check them. If you want to find more sprites from DoaE2 you can use nana to find them. Example to load the new sprites:
php feidian.php -ci nes8,1,1008,0×70090 newsprites1.bmp YuanShao_DoaE.nes
php feidian.php -ci nes8,1,1008,0×74090 newsprites2.bmp YuanShao_DoaE.nes
php feidian.php -ci nes8,1,1008,0×78090 newsprites3.bmp YuanShao_DoaE.nes
Then to use them in the game you'd either have to hex edit the general definitions to give them a new sprite ID as the guide talks about or update your DoaEditor table to have the new sprites.
Filling up newsprites2.bmp and newsprites3.bmp will be the hard part. You have to adjust those sprites to match DoaE1 format. The guide talks about how to do that:

ModeratorThen use the chartreuse (or whatever) armor on someone who does NOT have a huge beard of the color it would replace! :Þ
May 29, 2012 at 8:58 pm #42779sonic.penguin
ModeratorGot it… now I found out why you hate it, if you're just 1 pixel off…
Just practiced on these to see if I could get it right. I assembeled the middle guy from the parts to make him a whole :P
It appears also that DOAE2 only has 3/4 sprites also for officers you cant recruit. front+side but no back… I might put those in, but they wont have legitimate backs…
