ParticipantAbout Zhang Ren and Yan Yan rejoining… You still have Yan Yan in your party, but when you go to Chansha to learn the counter-thunder thing, Yan Yan is sitting on the throne… right?
And unless you somehow changed the positions of the original Zhang Bao and Guan Xing, Yan Yan should be standing right next to the Chansha Yan Yan when he asks to join… creepy.

KeymasterHmm. I think so. Actually, I might have switched Yan Yan and Zhang Ren with the Wu's (Wu Yi and Wu Lan). I'd rather do that then have Yan Yan + Zhang Ren "rejoin", even if they are two of the best Liu Zhang officers.

ParticipantThe Wu idea is better, since it would be a bit wierd with rejoining. It's like cloning or something…

KeymasterQuote:The Wu idea is better, since it would be a bit wierd with rejoining. It's like cloning or something…Yea some of the mods from other users have clones. I just chose to put Wu Yi and Wu Lan in their place, though it sucks losing Yan Yan and Zhang Ren.
So, courtesy of Cao Jay and his speedy DoaE 2 portrait adding, we have a few character updates.

Since I'll be making the mod a bit tougher, I've been forced to make Liu Zhang a bit better. Otherwise it'd be mean to stick a 140-150 Ruler in there, even though that would be more fitting for him. I might do it anyway, he's too good at 170 – 190.

Two different Zhang Yi's served Liu Zhang, if I recall correctly. This is the first Zhang Yi – takes the place of Han Zhong.

Liu Ba joins Liu Zhang after Luo Yang. The initial version of the Liu Zhang mod had almost every recruitable character have level ups – this updated version will feature many more that have a fixed soldier count, one that is higher upon initial recruitment to give them some quick value.
Updated the Destiny of an Emperor Liu Zhang Rom of course.

ParticipantSo is there more to come, or am I safe to start over for real? Being a slow gamer, if a new release is added, I'll be practically spinning in the Yellow Scarves area.
Oh, and how about giving Liu Zhang, Yan Yan, and Zhang Ren white backgrounds? In that way they will be portrayed as special. And it's also a bit weird to have a ruler with gray eyes. o.O

KeymasterYou're safe to start over for real. I'm not going to do a complete overhaul now – just wanted to give the main characters some additions. That said I probably will gradually update this as I get time, but I would just download the version on there now and enjoy.
So they are special if the backgrounds are white ? :) It's classic for my mods to have different colored portraits, even if they look weird. It's the LYS trademark. Tell you what, I'll make at least one of them White.

ParticipantThe new version's really cool. And about the portraits, I guess it's just a blocked mind or something.

So this guy must have been a bit sad; he grew a white beard overnight.

Pink Beard. It became a trademark.

Cunning. Cool. Well-balanced. An excellent officer.

This guy gets happier every moment.

And someone took a step back… but got more popular among the soldiers.

Brilliant!
By the way, a field battle with Zheng Mao and Zhang Yi almost got Yan Yan killed and everyone else had their soldier counts down to 40 or so. Zhang Yi is too strong… In other words, good job in recreating the Han Zhong part. People (or only I) might be concerned whether to keep a guy with 80 str and 30 int only because of his 204 soldiers, but Zhang Yi must be kept.

ModeratorYou should edit the faces for the uniques; they were designed to be used exclusively with whtie background, which is why poor Yan Yan is suffering from pinkeye.
Fortunately, replacing the white (now pink/grey/green/etc.) with skintone should work. keep in mind, though,. that you can simply stick with white, which I'm doing for all my uniques!
And yeah, balancing Liu Zhang (your mod) and Kong Rong (Jin Xuan mod) is a bit tricky. Yes, the 160/200 I gave to Kong Rong is likely better than he desarves, but seeing as he stays in the party until the end of Shu…
You may need to buff Liu Zhang a bit more, as (presumably) he's intended to be there until the final fight.

KeymasterHaha, DA…I appreciate the feedback, but you say these things like editing unique portraits is new to me. I've done my time with these mods and the editor – I know they're all supposed to have a white background. I'm not going for realism here, just what I think looks cool.
However I am trying to be a accurate as possible with the statistics, which is why I actually sunk Liu Zhang's stats from the above. Something like 162 – 171. It's bad, but to be honest he doesn't even deserve that. He'll still have good supporting members. Zhang Ren, Yan Yan, Fa Zheng, Wu Yi, Wu Lan, Meng Da, Lei Tong, Li Yan, etc.
I think sometimes the Shu army made us believe that there had to be all-powerful officers to get through DoaE. Truth is, even with an added difficulty you can get through with less than elite officers (see Yuan Shu Mod).

ParticipantPlayed through the Yellow Turban section just before, Real nice LYS, I'm enjoying it.
I'll play the Dong Zhuo section tommorrow. Like Link, the generals in the field gave me an ass kicking (Zhang Ren was out the whole time) but I think that's just fine.
I also like the portraits the way they are aswell, Yan Yan looks wacky, like his name.

KeymasterQuote:Like Link, the generals in the field gave me an ass kicking (Zhang Ren was out the whole time) but I think that's just fine.Glad to hear you're enjoying it. Yea, I gave Cheng Yuan Zhi, Zheng Mao and Zhang Yi a Spear instead of a Club, so they're a bit more formidable. At least at first when your main characters have like 100 soldiers. I just buy an extra Flail right away and give it to Yang Huai, and then run away from every commander battle until you gain a level or two.
One thing that bugs me is that Zhang Ren died for me one time through and then he went last every turn. I hate how the game does that, I don't remember the regular DoaE doing that when characters died though I'm not sure.
Again, with the Liu Zhang Mod I haven't done anything to the text, so it will make little sense. With the Yuan Shu mod I've at least done some text editing throughout the entire game to make the story make more sense. I will have to decide on a story / route for Liu Zhang to progress through the game, so he's not doing the same exact stages as Liu Bei (ie through Yuan Shu, to Jing Zhou, Ji Zhou, etc).
I just put Zhang Yi in there because I know there was a Zhang Yi that served Liu Yan early on in the RTK's (189 AD). Does anyone know of a Liu Zhang officer that first served the Yellow Turbans? It would probably make more sense to put a character like that in the game for Han Zhong, but I don't think there is so I just put Zhang Yi.

KeymasterThe more I play through this the more I realize I have a lot of work to do yet. Only the Yellow Turban and Liu Zhang (now Liu Bei-Shu area) are complete – some of the other battles throughout have been altered, but not much. I'll just need to sit down and look up Liu Zhang's history and change some of the castles / enemies to better match his path.
Anyway though, here are some of the characters I've added. Deng Qian, joins at burnt Luo Yang.
Can't forget Liu Gui, who takes Guan Ping's spot, joining after the Gold Key in the cave. Formerly Liu Kui at the first Shu gate, with Zhang Ren. Very mediocre, doesn't seem like a useful option for long though the 418 soldiers makes him an interesting meat shield early on.
Wang Lei joins at Chang An, after Dong Zhuo. Wang Lei's 200+ INT make him a good tactician heading into the third area (Yuan Shu's land for now). Still, his lower strength usually mean I don't use him in battle either – I tend to favor Liu Ba who has 190+ int but a more serviceable strength.
This is the normal Nan Yang Battle, but I wanted to show everyone the new Liu Zhang portrait + his cool Emperor sprite huohu . Of course I'm still rolling with Liu Ba here.
Li Hui is our hermit in the Liu Zhang version, taking over for Dan Fu (Xu Shu). Looks like I made Li Hui very similar statistically to Xu Shu as well.
