For some reason I’m not seeing them. Just the game links.
I know how to get to the forum because I have the address memorized. :)
March 3, 2008 at 2:12 am #19901NiahakModeratorThat’s odd, I’m not seeing them either.
I can get to the forum because the bookmark I have goes straight here…
March 3, 2008 at 2:25 am #19902FalloutParticipantlook to the left…
March 3, 2008 at 2:32 am #19903Lord Yuan ShuKeymasterYea we’ve been messing with the template lately, Junsui and I. We’ve realized that having the categories / games on the left on all the pages bleeds the PR and putting nofollow in the code doesn’t help since Yahoo ignores that. Anyway, it’s basically for SEO purposes.
All the game links / sitemap is on the lordyuanshu.com homepage….if you’re at any other page we kind of assume you’ll either hit the back button or know to change the url to the homepage to get all the links. But yea it definitely looks different and takes some getting used to.

There’s no harm in linking to all of your important game pages from the home page but you should at least group major links above it (e.g. sitemap and forum) in a way that makes them clearly distinct from the game listing.
Search engines don’t really give noteworthy priority to links found at the top of a page outside the first major headers and descriptive paragraph and they tend to be smart enough to find that descriptive paragraph without much trouble (you’ll notice that every page at KMA has a descriptive paragraph up there near the top of content). A spider treats all links on the page as links regardless of where they are found as long as they recognized the links to be user-accessible (they check for links which blend in with the page background, are too small to see, or are hidden off the page through negative margins). They then navigate through all of those links. This is where your sitemap becomes particularly useful but they’ll be able to find your sitemap on the right or left-hand side (even though your table means content on the right-hand side comes after the header, game links, and body content).
All said and done this stuff is only a very small part of what matters for SEO. Your pages gain real prominence when other people link to them using certain keywords in the descriptive text. For example, when I create this link: Lord Yuan Shu’s Excellent Site: Home to Destiny of an Emperor! I am increasing the relevance of ‘Lord Yuan Shu’ and ‘Destiny of an Emperor’, but only just a little bit because this forum is under the lordyuanshu.com domain. If I made the same link from Scholars of Shen Zhou it would count for a great deal more because it is another domain which has been established in search engines. If I created that same link from the Kongming’s Archives Destiny of an Emperor hope page it is gold because that is one of the highest ranking Destiny of an Emperor sites and search engines interpret that to mean that LYS.com must also be a worthwhile Destiny of an Emperor resource. The more pages that link to LYS using various keywords, the more prominent LYS becomes under those keywords, and the more valuable a link from LYS to similar content on another domain begins to matter.
On the flipside, if I created this link: Sheep Buggery: Weekends Only over at KMA, it wouldn’t mean much of anything. KMA (hopefully) is not associated with sheep buggery to search engines so they don’t place much value in KMA’s discussion of the subject. LYS strikes out again because it does not discuss sheep buggery (hopefully), so the spider dismisses the referral as an attempt to manipulate search engine rankings.
When you are creating a link over at LYS what really matters is that it is extremely accessible to search engines. If you wanted to improve things you could use tables only to layout the site and depend on CSS to present your lists of information. Spiders will understand and associate the content better and it will have a positive affect (and given that you know enough CSS to style up those cells it shouldn’t be much harder to style up a list instead). This limitation aside, that these links are presented as plain text with descriptive names already wins you bonus points.
In short, if you want to encourage ranking of your site, keep the code simple and make it as easy as possible for viewers to find the content they want. it is when they link to that content from other sites that you really win out in the game of SEO.
(And as you know, this is only one of many facets of SEO…)
March 3, 2008 at 7:20 am #19905Lord Yuan ShuKeymasterYea I know what you mean as far as viewer confusion. I brought this issue up with Junsui, since a lot of readers may get lost without knowing where to go (not all of us make websites after all). He just seemed to be confident that most would figure out how to press back or go into the url to go to the homepage (or use the bread crumb linking in the middle of the page towards the top.
Anyway here are the reasons SEO wise….
[11:14] junsuijin: well mainly just that huge category menu is fucking a lot with pr placement of the site
[11:14] junsuijin: and it’s a major silo bleed because every single category items links to every single other category
[11:15] junsuijin: so from our perspective they are all equally interrelated, when in fact wild arms is far more related to wild arms v, and so it should only every link to wild arms v category index from any page in the entire wild arms category or it’s content items
[11:15] junsuijin: same with final fantasies etx
[11:16] junsuijin: basically, no content item should link to a content item from a separate game
[11:16] junsuijin: it completely destroys the benefit of separating things into categories
[11:16] junsuijin: but
[11:17] junsuijin: content items can link to category indices if they are related
[11:17] junsuijin: and other items within the same game
[11:18] junsuijin: but basically
[11:18] junsuijin: any page’s pr gets split up among every single link on the page
[11:18] junsuijin: that doesn’t get affected if you have more than one link to the same place, that makes no difference it counts as one
[11:19] junsuijin: so, if we have a huge pr on the homepage, then any external links on that page are draining from our site the most of any page
There you go. More or less we only want the linking to be between relevant games (like you were stating with your comment about relevant links earlier).
Obviously we haven’t gotten to the point of going through each category and adding these links though, because we’re probably going to really redesign the site sometime in the somewhat near future. Instead of Joomla which has some silly side effects (like, it goes haywire once you have a shitload of content like we do).
The most annoying side effect is when you go to like Wild Arms V or Growlanser V…and it shows like 8 other rpg sections below it (the page title also will say "Other RPGs"). This is really bad especially when a spider catches it and then all of our sweet SEO work with the page title and meta goes to hell.
Lately we’ve been using modded WordPress that acts more like a website but with the PR benefits that blogs bring (like automatic pinging, naturally better respect from google, etc).
I hear ya on the in / out linking…That really is how you climb the ladder. Of course they need to be reputable links and relevant.
Though once you gain google’s respect in any given niche, you can begin to rank well for other stuff as well. Of course it’s not as efficient as it would be if the niche’s were related but nonetheless it’s better than starting from scratch.
Either way I agree the site as currently constructed can be a little confusing, or more like a dead-end at times. Maybe I can get Junsui on here to share his thoughts as well :). SEO stuff is always fun…
