ModeratorHuh. Well, most characters have 2 soldier values. For the generals you fight, they’re different; for ones you don’t they’re the same. I gave Jiang Wei his "you-fight-him" soldier value; he might not actually be in a battle.
Also, the patch is done. Link on the first post very soon.

ParticipantCould you figure out how to make it so I can put Guan Yu and Zhang Fei into billeting?
Or does it let me do that after the Yellow Scarves?
You have to remember, though; the very thing that makes you a nerd is that your enthusiasms are totally unrelatable and non-marketable to most of the world. For example, anime and celibacy. - Seanbaby

ParticipantI don’t know what’s happening. I’m using the same program that you are using (WindHex) but it won’t show what it shows in your screenshot. I go at the very same location and it shows only Hex gibberish instead of Huo Hu…

ModeratorHmm, I only realized the billeting thing recently myself. That’ll be problematic if you want to replace the now-weak GY and ZF. I’ll look into it later today if I can; if we’re lucky, it’s just a simple flag. If we’re unlucky, it’s hardcoded so that GY and ZF have special traits (can’t put into billeting, enemies always talk to them, etc).

KeymasterYea I’m blazing through the Yuan Shu realm currently, but Zhang Fei and Guan Yu are becoming hard to keep alive. Still, they’re the best characters you can have with their stats. Eventually though I’ll probably kill them off.
Zhou Chao is actually kinda good. His INT is a weak 20 but I forgot his STR is 140 – relatively good for these joker s
BTW, did you do anything to Guan Xing or Zhang Bao. If they are static I may just skip them so avoid this problem later on.

ModeratorI gave them static values but they should be pretty high (decent for their area). Not sure how high, though.

ParticipantAwesome! So how about a team like this?
Song Yong
Song Ren
Chen Deng
Mi Zhe
Huo Hu
Yang Jin
<Insert>
Han Zhong (Haha! … nah)
It could be kind of like Taishi Ci 2.0’s Fate of a Rebel.
Do Zhuge Liang, Lu Bu, Guan Yu, Zhang Fei have any common values that might be a billeting flag? If we can correlate something between them perhaps we can allow billeting. Then we could have a game in which you can use an entire team of clowns!
Edit: Who has a Huo Hu-like red sprite? Or is it just several steps up or down from Huo Hu’s persent sprite? It would be fun to turn him red and make Demonic Huo Hu, the master strategist of China! I wish I was home to mess with this stuff more!

KeymasterI finally captured Ji Zhou. That battle was hard as hell, even with a leveled up party. With Swords though, it was easy to take. I had to get through Chang Sha first. I think Zhou Chao and Huo were the only survivors in that battle.
My party has basically been
Yang Jin
Wang Gui
Zhou Chao
Song Ren
Huo Hu
* Zhang Fei
* Guan Yu
but now that I have been forced to take in Zhuge…
Yang Jin
Wang Gui
Zhou Chao
Huo Hu
* Zhuge Liang
* Zhang Fei
* Guan Yu
Lots of challenge, lots of fun, and I’m not even using Song Yong. I like the 4 and 5 person party’s because it’s important to include Huo Hu in battle imo. Both because he’s awesome and because of his Int. The problem with this group is there are so many low 100 STR and then sub 50 Int characters (Zhou Chao, Yang Jin, Song Yong, Wang Gui) that it’d be murder to run them all out there at once. Hence the Song Yong benching. Zhou Chao’s 140 STR makes him seem like a god relative to these other guys.
And I think in the future I’m just gonna not get Guan Xing and Zhang Bao so I’m not hassled with party sizes.

ParticipantOkay, I’ve played with this for a while.
Billeting
I examined all the officer stats and I simply cannot figure out which values correlate to the billeting. The only values which remain consistent between each officer do not remain consistent between officers which can and cannot be added to billeting. I even tried changing the values which always seem to be 00.
Lord Huo Hu
Here is how to create Lord Huo Hu:
STR: 50 => AA/C3 *
INT: AF => E1/EB *
Sprite Color: 40 => 04
Soldiers: 85 => 8F
AGI: 28 => E6
Portraits BG: C5 => 06
* The first value is for a grand Huo Hu, the second for Lord Huo Hu!
IPS Patcher
How do you export this stuff to an IPS patch? Do you have to edit the ROM file from the original ROM to do so? Or could an updated IPS patch be created from a modification to your own patch?
Requests
I think it would be really fun to base this challenge on Taishi Ci’s Fate of a Rebel comic. That means the other starter characters, such as Mi Zhe and Chen Deng, should be able to receive level-ups.
Also, it would be nice if Guan Yu, Zhang Fei, and others (maybe Zhou Cang, maybe even the likes of Guan Ping and Liu Feng?, leveled normally. We can always kill ’em off for a challenge, but it would be awesome to be able to play a regular game with them too, all using the same ROM!
I would love to have a version of the ROM (or IPS patch) that featured Lord Huo Hu. It would be fun to play the challenge with him being the only truly powerful character! Ditch Zhang Fei and Guan Yu immediately in favor of Mi Zhe, Chen Deng, Song Yong, Song Ren and others. Then this really would be ‘how things really happened’. I personally favor the more powerful version of Huo Hu I created above!
I can do this, I just don’t know how to create IPS patches properly. :(
Also, the patching program you featured isn’t loved by all emulators. I remember it took me a while to find a good IPS patcher that worked with all the emulators I experimented with. When the patch is created, would it also be possible to share the pre-patched ROM file too?
Thought
If we wanted to go nuts, would it not be possible to replace Guan Yu and Zhang Fei with, say, Huo Hu and another? And Guan Yu and Zhang Fei could then be tossed into those other locations? Maybe that would automatically give Huo Hu the impossible to place in billeting flag (Haha)!
I’m really looking forward to starting this!
I’ll create it if I need to. I know pretty much what I must aside from patching. But you’ve already come so far along that it shouldn’t be hard to wrap up the final details?
Lord Huo Hu, here we come!
* Now complete with red robs and angry purple-red background!
October 7, 2007 at 2:23 am #25474Niahak
ModeratorThis actually shouldn’t be too hard to do :P The only hard part would be balancing it, really.
Instead of flipping the billeting flags, why not just switch the characters? Rename Guan Yu Huo Hu, give him HH’s stats and portrait, rename Huo Hu Guan Yu and do the same for him ;)
Making an IPS is easy. It’s the same process as applying one, really:
1. Put unmodified DOAE and modified DOAE rom in the same directory
2. Start LunarIPS, pick "Make IPS Patch", and select the appropriate roms to generate the patch from.

ParticipantSo are you going to do it? Or am I? :P
The catch of making Zhang Fei and Guan Yu into others is that they will leave your party. But now I realize it could be fun to make a regular Huo Hu and, say, Song Yong, and then, replacing Zhang Bao and Guan Xing, a super Huo Hu and Warrior Song Yong!
Well… then people couldn’t remove Song Yong…
That would serve our purposes, but…
Warrior Song Yong might have similar coloring to Huo Hu. Or we could make him take Lu Bu’s coloring (if he doesn’t have it already)? His strength should be grand indeed, but his intelligence low. His soldiers perhaps in line with Zhang Bao. It would be really funny if Huo Hu sits there on the throne offering his ‘son’, Lord Huo Hu to you. Imagine if we even changed those scripts! Haha…
Guan Yu and Zhang Fei… regular Guan Yu and Zhang Fei… should be possible to recover through whatever means they are swapped out for.
So this is starting to form in my mind.
Song Yong is swapped with Guan Yu
Huo Hu is swapped with Zhang Fei
(Or Song Ren could actually be swapped with them to place Guan Yu and Zhang Fei right there at the beginning).
Do you suppose a save would be compatible after minor edits were made from this point?
I want to make Yang Jin’s introduction script that of a pirate.
How do you edit text? Is there anything special to it, or is it just a matter of changing values as appropriate?

ParticipantNot sure how all this is going to work out, but I’d love to play it. Song Yong and Song Ren (and Huo Hu) were the true heroes of the Three Kingdoms.
